IAVA Recipient: Secretary Mattis Letter: Greetings, First, thank you for your service and sacrifice and for your incredible leadership that so many in the military and veteran community have experienced and respect. As you know, more than 1.5 million veterans have have educated themselves with the Post-9/11 GI Bill, and almost 70% of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) members have used or transferred this benefit to a dependent. It could very well be the most transformative federal benefit created. The new restriction on Post-9/11 GI Bill transferability to only those with less than 16 years of service is a completely unnecessary reduction of this critical benefit, and it will ultimately hurt our military recruitment and readiness. In a time of war, it remains enormously important to recruit and retain qualified servicemembers, especially with an ever-decreasing pool of eligible recruits. For years, IAVA has been at the forefront of this fight. We led the effort to establish this benefit in 2008 and we have successfully defended it in recent years. We cannot allow our GI Bill to be dismantled or abused. This is why I am standing with my fellow IAVA members to respectfully request that you reverse this counterproductive policy change that creates barriers to access to these transformative benefits. The GI Bill has been earned by millions of men and women on the battlefield and around the world and it should not be subjected to arbitrary restrictions that limit its use. Again, thank you for your leadership and I ask that you take action now to reverse this decision.

  • Statehouse Report
March 31, 2017 Big step forward for permissive county authority to levy additional $5 motor vehicle license fee Thank you to CCAO members & partners for your awesome advocacy efforts! Thanks to the General Assembly approving the Transportation Budget Conference Committee Report, counties are a BIG step closer to being able to levy an additional $5 motor vehicle license fee to fund local road and bridge infrastructure. The Conference Committee, tasked with ironing out the differences between the Ohio House and Senate, on Monday picked the House-passed provision that gave a board of county commissioners or county council the permissive authority to pass a resolution enacting the fee, though subject to voter referendum. County commissioners, county executives and county council members along with their staff and CCAO’s policy team worked with a coalition of advocates, including the County Engineers Association of Ohio (CEAO), regional planning agencies and several business organizations, to support the proposed additional $5 motor vehicle license tag fee, which hasn’t been adjusted since 1987. Thank you to CCAO’s members and our partners for your advocacy efforts that made an enormous difference! Several elected officials along with county staff provided testimony and attended statehouse hearings. Moreover, many contacted lawmakers expressing support for a board of commissioners and council members to exercise funding decisions, subject to referendum, that reflect the needs of their counties. The measure is before the Governor for his consideration and is expected to take action on the bill soon. Details on other provisions in the bill and the Governor’s action will be reported in next week’s CCAO Statehouse Report.

FEB 27: Stop Gerrymandering Now! - Atlanta, GA Mon Feb 27th 4:00pm - 8:00pm AtlantaGAGeorgiaVoting 18 Capitol Square SW, Atlanta, GA 30334, USA map Sen Elena Parent and 5 other Senators have sponsored Resolutions S.R. 6 and S.R. 7, calling for an amendment to the Georgia Constitution creating an independent bipartisan commission to draw voting districts. The hearing for these resolutions will be at the last minute before crossover day, on Monday Feb 27 at 4 pm in room 307 of the Coverdell Legislative Office Building. We need to show up at the meeting and demand a vote that day. Our votes matter! We demand fair and equal representation! Partisan legislatures have been violating federal mandate for decades, by drawing voting district boundaries to favor the party in power. It’s called Gerrymandering. Gerrymandering undermines fair representation and competitive elections. Gerrymandered districts cheat voters by making some votes count more than others. It’s not hard to see that partisan legislators have a vested interested in the outcome. The good news is Sen Elena Parent and 5 other Senators have sponsored Resolutions S.R. 6 and S.R. 7, which call for an amendment to the Georgia Constitution creating an independent bipartisan commission to draw voting districts instead of the General Assembly. Georgia would join 6 other forward-looking states if it adopted the independent commission approach to redistricting. More good news is that Senator Ben Watson of the Reapportionment and Redistricting Committee has agreed to hold a hearing on the resolutions. But, the hearing is at the 11 th hour before Crossover Day, when bills in each house must crossover to the other house for consideration.
