Three seasons ago, the Tigers accomplished something previously not done since 1981. They captured a SEC Championship, the fi rst under the helm of Coach Mike Griffi n. Prior to that Championship year, Griffi n led the Tigers to 13 top-fi ve fi n- ishes and six conference runner-ups. “This was my fi rst SEC title since I arrived at Auburn so that makes it even more special,” Griffi n said. No. 12 Auburn took an 11-shot lead into the fi nal round of play at Sea Island Golf Club’s Seaside Course in St. Simons Island, Ga. Fourth-ranked Florida cut the lead to four strokes, but Auburn held on and eventually won by a commanding seven-shot margin. Three Tigers fi nished in the top 10 with junior Jay Mundy fi n- ishing third at 70-67-75--212.

Almost every year the Auburn men’s golf team takes a trip to Hawaii. While the Tigers go to play golf, they also go to en- joy some fun in the sun on the beach. The Tigers have traveled to Schofi eld Barracks, Hawaii, 13 times over the years. They participate in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate Golf Classic at the beauti- ful Leilehua Golf Course. The tournament usually features 18 or more teams from around the country. The Tigers have won the tournament once, in 1996, and have placed second three times.

In 1979, Aubie came to life at the Southeastern Conference basketball tournament. James Lloyd, Auburn spirit director for the Student Government Association, with help from the Alum- ni Association, contacted Brooks-Van Horn Costumes in New York, N.Y. The company was provided with copies of the 1961 Auburn- Alabama and 1962 Auburn-Georgia Tech game programs to use for reference in creating a costume of the cartoon charac- ter. The fi rm, which also provided costumes for Walt Disney, designed and produced a Tiger costume for $1,350. Individual contributions from various Auburn clubs, alumni and friends helped pay for the fi rst costume. Aubie proudly marched into the Birmingham-Jefferson County Civic Center on Feb. 28, 1979, and he helped lead fi rst- year Auburn coach Sonny Smith’s team to an upset of Vander- bilt. The following day, Aubie returned to the arena and the Ti- gers surprised Georgia in the longest game in SEC Tournament history, four overtimes. Before the weekend was complete, Aubie helped lead the ninth-place team in the regular season to the semifi nals of the tournament. Aubie was elected as the nation’s No. 1 college mascot of 1990-91 by the Universal Cheerleader Association as Chris Wood, Mike Jernigan and Rob Thomson represented Aubie in the suit. The 1994-95 Aubies, Trey Humphreys, Mike Murphy and Billy Stephens, received the No. 1 college mascot again.
