MAX FORDHAM ENGINEERS’ SOUND AND VISION FOR RIBA PRIZE WINNER

Building engineers at Max Fordham played a key role in the design of this year’s RIBA Stirling Prize winning building. Damien Hirst’s Newport Street Gallery, in Vauxhall, London, was designed by architects Caruso St John to house the artist’s private collection. Max Fordham designed the environmental engineering, the acoustics and lighting for the refurbishment of three listed former theatre-scenery workshops and the addition of extensive gallery space. The building’s saw-tooth roof was positioned to allow indirect sunlight into the galleries, and natural daylight was used wherever possible. However, the roof design also meant most of the M&E plant had to be installed in the basement. The building is next to a busy railway, so particular attention had to be paid to the acoustic design, with high-performance sound insulation and low-noise air conditioning used.
