Training

Leave No Trace Trainer Classes, Fall 2016 What is the purpose of this class? The Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, Venturing, and Sea Scout programs all include outdoor stewardship, care for the environment, and Leave No Trace as part of their programs. This course is offered to train adults and youth aged 14+ to serve their units and districts as Leave No Trace Trainers and as Outdoor Ethics Trainers. Every Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, Venturing, and Sea Scout unit should have at least one Leave No Trace/Outdoor Ethics Trainer. This course is strongly recommended for Boy Scouts serving as Outdoor Ethics Guides. Who should attend? Venturers, Sea Scouts, Varsity Scouts, and Boy Scouts aged 14+; adult Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity, Venturing, and Sea Scout leaders; and District and Council leaders and trainers. What will I learn? This course is designed to enhance your understanding of Leave No Trace practices and outdoor ethics, and to increase your level of expertise and confidence in teaching Leave No Trace skills. This class is both active and highly interactive. You will be introduced to concepts and methods that will advance your knowledge of Leave No Trace issues in both developed and high adventure environments, expand your repertoire of low- impact skills, and increase your effectiveness in teaching these important skills to others. On completion of this course, participants will be registered as Leave No Trace Trainers with the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and with the BSA. Students will receive Leave No Trace teaching materials, a certificate of course completion, a Leave No Trace Trainer lapel pin, and a BSA Leave No Trace Trainer card. This course is instructed by nationally designated Leave No Trace Master Educators and Trainers. Attendance for the entire duration of the training is required.

Order of the Arrow

Lodge Fall Fellowship The Bull Run Chapter is ready and excited for a year of progress and excitement after our elections held in June. In the upcoming months the Bull Run Chapter will be preparing for its Fall Ordeal coming up in October. We will be hosting an ordeal and a brotherhood ceremony for new brothers to join the brotherhood and for current members to reaffirm their oath to the . Along with the ordeal, the Bull Run Chapter will be conducting a Spirit Hike in late August. Bull Run Chapter, as part of Area South, will be hosting the Amangemek-Wipit Lodge Fall Fellowship at Camp William B. Snyder, 16-18 September. The theme is ―Honoring our Culture and Traditions‖. The OA encourages lodge ceremonialists to dress in costumes reflecting the local American Indian groups. By the time of the American Revolution there were no significant numbers of native people remaining within today‘s National Capital Area Council region. The period of the French and Indian War (1854-1863) was the high point of presence for native groups. French and Indian War living historians and re -enactors will be a part of the activities, along with ceremonies evaluations, high adventure-themed competitions, native crafting, and a pow-wow Saturday evening. At the fort there will be tomahawk tossing, an archery trick shooting demonstration, brain tanning deer hides, deer toe pulling, flint knapping, flint and steel fire making, branding, native cordage making, and much more. The staff of the NOAC Suiting Up For Ceremonies (SUFC) will present two three-hour long training sessions on northeast and southeast woodland Indian outfits. All the high adventure bases will be featured with games including ―boulder bashing,‖ canoe portage races, buck sawing and backpack races. The Head Drum for the pow-wow is Zotighe; the Head Singer will be Ralph Zotighe, a Kiowa Elder. Numerous native people are expected to attend and dance along with veterans and guests. The Head Man Dancer is Wyatt Bryant. Wyatt is an eleven year old Boy Scout and phenomenal dancer who competes nationally. All dance styles will be demonstrated. Dance teams from throughout MD, NC, WV and VA have been invited to attend. Cracker barrel Friday night will feature samples of wild game. William B. Snyder will be the guest at Saturday night‘s bison steak supper. If you wear the OA flap on your uniform, this is a must attend event— and it‘s in our backyard at Camp Snyder! Pay your dues, register on line and come. A large attendance is expected and if you don‘t register on time you will be eating hamburger instead of bison steak! If you are a French and Indian War re-enactor or living historian/crafts person — or know of one — email [email protected] to participate.

5 August 2016 http://www.ncacbsa.org/bull-run/ Sea Scout Wardroom Bull Run Division National Capital Area Squadron Chesapeake Flotilla

Flotilla Raft-up Aug 13-14 A dozen boats from Sea Scout Ships around the Chesapeake Flotilla will convene at Coordinates 39°07'26.4"N 76°09’55.8"W for the 2016 Flotilla Raft-Up. Boats ranging in size from the NCAC Flagship SSTV der PeLiKan (46’ Morgan Ketch) under the operation of Ship 100 to the SSTV Long Rider (a 700hp Carver yacht) will form a giant floating island off the coast of Cacaway Island. Program includes training on Ordinary and Able Sea Scout rank, as well as swimming, water sports and a “Mainsail Screen Movie Night” where we project the movie onto the mainsail of a neighboring boat.

Safety at Sea Sept 19 Chesapeake Flotilla Boatswain Aidan Wiecki (Ship 100) with the support of the Baltimore Squadron, announces the 2016 Safety At Sea Weekend at the US Coast Guard Station Curtis Bay. Activities include chemical fire response, demolition of hundred of rescue flares, firehose operation, signaling and radio communications, command simulators and more.

Koch Cup Two Sea Scouts, Mike Lieberman and Cate Boulter, from Bull Run District were selected to compete in the William I. Koch International Sea Scout Cup in Long Beach California. They were one of the top three teams from the Northeast Region to qualify. The Koch Cup is an international competition between the top 40 FJ-Class sailing teams worldwide. For 2016, Team New Zealand had the honor of being the first International Team to win the Koch Cup in as long as anyone can remember. It is both great fun and a great honor to even be selected to compete. Safety Afloat The Sea Scouts remind all Scouts that BSA requires a PFD (Lifejacket) to be worn by ALL participants when on boats 20ft or smaller. For boats 20ft or larger, PFDs are required to be accessible from the deck. Per US Coast Guard guidelines, inflatable PFDs are only applicable for participants 16years and older, and are NOT for use in water sports such as waterskiing, wake boarding or other sports where the inflation trigger would be activated.

Leaders

Requesting Park Space By Scouts Hello Scout Leaders, I regularly receive emails from Scout Packs and Troops desiring to have events at the Prince William County Parks. We would love for you to continue having your bridging ceremonies, fishing derbies and other activities at the parks. We are asking you to fill out the linked form prior to holding these events at the parks in the future. We had a situation last month where a huge Cub Scout Pack held their bridging ceremony on an already busy weekend at a park. Had we known about the event in advance we could have had Rangers on site to assist with parking and other safety concerns. We also could have notified the Pack that the park didn't have running water (which caused a bathroom issue). This was not a pretty situation! The park space is for all county residents and we would appreciate a heads up in advance of your scouting events. There may be dates that the parks already have a program or event at the site requested by the park. In those situations, we hope that the Scouting organizations will plan ahead enough to be able to find an alternative date. Often the Scout Packs & Troops have their calendar scheduled a year out. If this is true for your group, don't hesitate to get that information to me as soon as you create your calendar and we can plan our programming around yours sometimes. Thank you in advance for your cooperation! If there are any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact me in the future. Bonnie Gray PWCDPR Scouting Coordinator [email protected] (703)670-9118
