The Brothers of Beta Alpha Mu Fraternity History of the Bronx

The Borough of the Bronx was originally formed as part of what is now Westchester County. Its western boundary was the ; its eastern, the Connecticut Colony and Long Sound; its southern, the East and Harlem rivers and the . The Borough of the Bronx was included within the county of Westchester until 1874 for the western part of the borough, and until 1895 for the eastern part. On January 1, 1898, the charter of the Greater New York went into effect, and the whole annexed section north of the became officially known as the Borough of the Bronx - taking its name from the river that ran through it.

The Dutch were the first to settle in what is now known as the five boroughs of New York in the middle 1600's. The first known white settler to inhabit the Bronx was not Dutch but Swedish. In 1641

Jonas Bronk purchased five hundred acres of land between the Harlem and Aquahung rivers. The latter stream soon lost its Indian name and became known as Bronk 's river, later to be revised to .

The next to settle within the borough was Mrs. Ann Hutchinson, who originally settled in Boston in 1634. Because of religious persecution against her, she and her family migrated to what is known as Pelham's Neck. The Dutch called the neck after her, Annes Hoeck,

In 1699 Jacobus Van Cortlandt married the adopted daughter of

Frederick Philipse and bought fifty acres of land on George's Point and added to this about one hundred acres more that he purchased from neighboring landholders. These constituted the nucleus of the Van Cortlandt estate. the Park an Today, has area of 1,132.35 acres, with

a lake for rowing, golfcourse, and stables. The Van Cortlandt House,

contained within the park, is one of the famous old houses within the

Greater New York area. It is still in excellent condition.

Van Cortlandt Park is second in size and first in point of

interest of Bronx Parks. It extends from the city line on the north to

West 240th Street- South-on the south. Its western

boundary is , and its eastern Jerome Avenue and Mt. Vernon Ave.

The first purchase of land in the Riverdale area was bought

by George Hadley from the Commissioners of Forfeiture in 1785. The next

major purchase of land did not occur until 1853 when William and Garret

Ackermann bought 100 acres of land along the Hudson River near the

Riverdale railroad station. At this time no stores or villages, in the

ordinary sense of the word, were constructed in Riverdale. The highest

point of the borough is in Riverdale, 282 feet above sea level. Among

other notable inhabitants was Mark Twain, who lived in the Riverdale

area in 1901.

The area of land directly north of the Spuyten-Duyvil Creek was purchased by Frederick Van Cortlandt in 1768. Upon this land he erected an estate which became known as "Upper Cortlandt", to distinguish

it from the mansion in Van Cortlandt Park. After his death, the estate passed onto his brother Augustus. But in 1836 James R. Whiting purchased the estate from his heirs and erected a large stone mansion overlooking the Hudson River.

In 1892, the remnant of the Whiting property came into the possession of the Sisters of Charity, who converted the large house into a Later a fine hospital. hospital was erected on Spuyten Duyvil

Riverdale, which is the extreme northwest corner of New York

City, is probably the most rugged part of the city - at one point reaches an elevation of 282 feet - the highest in the city. Riverdale is bounded on the east and west by Broadway, and the Husdon River, by the Yonkers City line on the north, and by the Harlem ship canal on the south. Famous for old trees and splendid rock formations,

Riverdale-on-Hudson is an oasis in a busy metropolis.

Indian tribes first occupied this area. They clustered in large settlements at the mouth of Spuyten Duyvil Creek and along the

Nepperhan River.

One of the wealthiest colonists in , Frederick

Ulypse, was undoubtedly the most important purchaser of the land in the

Riverdale area. In 1672 he bought land along the Hudson River. He gradually increased his holdings until they included Riverdale, Yonkers,

Tarrytown, Croton and Tappan on the other side of the river. This extensive accumulation was combined in 1693 into the manor of

Phillipsburgh. The southerly gatehouse of the Philpse Manor is the oldest house in modern Riverdale. It stands on the at about 249th Street.

The impact of the Revolutionary War upon Riverdale thoroughly disrupted the community. Some like the Tippetts and the powerful

to the others Philpse family maintained their loyality King; espoused

the cause of the Revolution.

Politically, Riverdale was a part of the township of Yonkers until 1872, when the New York State Legislature created the City of

Yonkers at its present boundaries. The section to the south, including Riverdale, became the township of Kingsbridge. Two years later, the entire township was annexed to the City of New York as the twenty fourth ward.

Men of prominence in the business world, like the Delafields

(banking) or the Kingsleys (insurance) set up permanent residences in Riverdale. Thus, a landed gentry of wealth and position became the dominant class in Riverdale. The average estate was between six and eighteen acres although there were some larger.

Riverdale retained an exclusively residential character for a long time. Citizens united in a common purpose to preserve its natural beauty against the encroachments of the city.

As time went on, over ten per cent of the section was given over to educational institutions. Today, Riverdale can boast of several excellent centers of learning, mere enumeration of which cannot do justice to them: Riverdale Country School, St. Margaret's

Parochial School, Barnard School for Boys, Horance Mann School for

Boys, Fieldston School, College of Mt. Saint Vincent and, of course,

Manhattan College. Manhattan College Founded by Brothers of the Christian Schools THE HISTORY OF MANHATTAN COLLEGE

In July, 1848, four Christian Brothers journeyed from Le Harvrei,

France, to open Saint Vincent's Parochial School on in

New York City. With the help of Father Lafont, Brother Stylien had been designated as director. Accompanying him was Brother Andronis, an

experienced novice master with a dream of founding a novitiate in this new land, a dream he later saw fulfilled. Brother Albien was sub-di

rector of the first community and Brother Pastoris came along as the

footsoldier to carry out the orders of these directors. In September,

1848, they opened their little school with only three classes- two in

French and one in English. Their success was almost instantaneous?

Boarders were taken in and public examinations were held for admitt

ance. The reputation of the little school spread so rapidly that the

problem of expansion soon became tantamount in the little community.

Soon, boarding students clamored to enter but no additional

room could be made for them. Brother Albien and Brother Pastoris

were forced to the only conclusion, they must open a special school.

There was another factor to be considered though, the Parish of St.

Vincent's had already determined to follow the drift of the French

speaking population and had established itself on its present site

on 23rd. Street. The Brothers had to find a new novitiate and a new

school as well I Accordingly, 44 Second Street was purchased and

named De La Salle Institute. Boarders were moved to a building on

Mulberry Street while the novitiate moved to Clason's Point. Shortly thereafter, a boarding school was purchased by Brother

Stylien in upper Manhattan at what is now 131st. Street. Sturdy and

in good shape, the buildings were transformed into a school house and dormitories. By May 5th., the Brothers had moved in with neither food nor furniture available; Brother Chrysostom was made superior. Thus,

in 1853 Manhattan College had its beginning in what was the Academy of

The Holy Infancy. A year later, the College Chapel (a part of the old

Annunciation Church) was opened. The land and the buildings now had

an institutional look. The school had its own fire call, its own local

court, its own post office, and its own station on the Hudson Rail

Road.

In 1861, Brother Paulian changed the name of the school to i

Manhattan College "in honor of the historic island on which it stands."

Brother Paulian became the second President of Manhattan College, suc-

ceding a brief tenure of Brother Patrick. September of 1861 saw the

first catalogue of Manhattan College issued. The catalogue stated the

aims and purposes of the college as offering "the means of acquiring

the highest grade of education attained in the best American universi

ties and colleges."

Before 1866, no degrees were awarded. Dr. Cornelius O'Leary

stated that there were students ready to receive the A.B. but the

authorities thought it better to postpone the awarding of degrees at

Commencement until 1866. The first Charter Commencement was held on

July 2, 1866. By 1870 the reputation of the College was tenaciously

rooted. Most of the expansion and solidifying was carried out by

Brother Paulian during his tenure of 1873 - 1879. When Brother Paulian

resigned to become Provincial of the St. Louis district, Brother An

thony took over. the By 1879, College was now within the jaws of a hungrily

New expanding York City. The College was shocked into realization when the in order to city, straighten Bloomingdale Road, slapped a $15,000 asessment on it. A new facade was erected in order to make the College face and Broadway various other improvements were made in the build

and ings grounds. As time went on, the school progressed in both edu cation and facilities always keeping up with the rapidly growing commu nity.

Brother Anthony was determined to move further north. 1890 found this dream realized with the purchase of a beautiful tract of land in Irvington-On-Hudson. Because of legal technicalities the venture was terminated and the property resold. In 1902 the present site of the

College was secured by the purchase of 196 city lots, approximately 12 acres, from Ephraim Levy. The property was bounded by Spuyten Duyvil

Parkway and Broadway in the borough of the Bronx. The total cost of the land was $77,5001 The College maintained the name of Manhattan

College even though it was now located in the wilderness of the Bronx.

Four buildings were erected on this property forming a Quadrangle;

De La Salle Hall, Manhattan Hall, Administration, and the Chapel. A dormitory was erected shortly thereafter, Chrysostom Hall, to help alleviate the increased demand for boarding facilities at this school in the wilderness.

1917 was a banner year for the college with the completion of the elevated subway up to the 242ndj St. area. With the increase in transportation facilities, Manhattan College became one of the fore most Catholic Colleges for men in the metropolitan area. The College drew heavily on the students graduating from the rapidly increasing number of Catholic High Schools.

The students began to publish various periodicals, such as the

Manhattanite and the Koran, a student handbook. It was at the same

that the The 1921 period weekly newspaper. Quadrangle , first appeared.

saw the opening of Alumni Gymnasium as the home of the "Jaspers". Sports has always played a big role in the life of the students of Manhattan

and the traditions developed during this early period have held over

to this day. Manhattan College played Miami in the very first Orange

Bowl game and the Jaspers were one of the finest football powers in

the country during the late 20 's and 30's. and track have

also been one of main athletic endeavours in which Manhattan has con-

tributed.

Having always been primarily a Liberal Arts School, the early

20 's found Manhattan College starting the various Engineering depart

ments. The School of Engineering officially opened as an accredited

Engineering School in 1928, the same year as the School of Business

was founded. Engineering courses were being taught prior to this,

however. 1933 saw the founding of the Epsilon Sigma Pi Honor Frater

nity and the Physical Education Dept.

The Second World War fourd the College in a precarious position

with the great decrease in enrollment due to the war. The facilities of

and the college were used by the federal government for research train

ing. The Preperatory School, Manhattan College High School, was built

up to help defray the war drain.

The close of the War saw a significant change take place on

build- the campus, the erection of the "shacks". These were temporary ings were erected to help in the enormous enrollment of students after

the War. These pre-fabricated army buildings served as the home of the

Engineering School until 1965 at which time they moved to their pres

ent home .

1961 saw the completion of the student center, Thomas Hall.

Three floors are utilized as dining facilities for boarding and day stu

dents and offices of all campus organizations. 1964 was the year in which the school purchased the West Hill Sanitarium property and the con

version of the buildings into residence facilities. As already mentioned,

1965 marked the movement of the Engineering School from the main cam

pus to their new home located several blocks away. The old Fanny Farmer

Candy factory was completely renovated and converted into one of the

most complete Engineering centers on any campus. The building contains

all the latest in engineering equipment; the School of Engineering can

boast of being the only undergraduate School of Engineering to have a

"critical" nuclear reactor. The Engineering center also contains the

Data Processing Center.

September of 1966 found the College with an all time high in

enrollment especially in residence students. As a result of an extended

School of Business Administration

The School of Business Administration can trace its earliest origins to the School of Arts and Science where, in 1926, a two year program in business subjects was offered for the first time. This two year program was generally concerned with economics and "quantitative methods." The program enjoyed notable progress and was highly acclaimed on the campus. Shortly after the first graduating class received their

Bachelor of Science in Business Degrees in 1928, the business program was registered with the Board of Regents in Albany and was chartered to grant degrees in Accounting and General Business.

Thus, September, 1928, marked the first appearance of the new four year School of Business Administration and became located in its present home, De La Salle Hall. June of 1932 saw the first graduating class step out into the business world with their Accounting or General

Business concentration. The Bachelor of Science in Business degree was still retained from the old two year program. This class of 1932

went on to contribute several teachers to the college notably, Mr. G.

Michael Mestice, present head of the Accounting Department, and Mr. James

Cahill, present Professor of Economics at the college.

In 1934, another notable change took place with the degree

136 credits being changed to a Bachelor of Business Administration.

with and General Business still were required for graduation Accounting the only two options. It was at the announcement of this change that

of Business Dean James L. Fitzgerald, the founder of the School

Administration, succinctly stated the aims and purposes of the School of Business to be

".... that the Manhattan School of Business should teach

those broad underlying fields of knowledge that are basic to

the practice of business and that it should teach the fields

of business practice in a broad analytical framework rather

than in terms of current or recent business practices."

These words have since been the broad underlying objectives of the

School of Business and were reaffirmed throughout Dean Fitzgerald's

30 year term and that of his predecessor, the very late Brother Clement

Francis, F.S.C.

Pressure to make the program a more difficult one saw the

School of Business change its credit requirements to 141 in order to keep the School of Business up to the highest academic level. The

Second World War saw many students come and go through the portals of

De La Salle Hall. The war, with its demands for specialization and technology saw the incorporation of the fields of Economics, Marketing, and Labor -Management into the B.B.A. program. These areas were added to give depth to the Business program but never losing sight of the breadth expressed by Dean Fitzgerald - Manhattan was keeping pace with the demands of the modern business world and has always looked to business leaders for guidance and counsel.

In 1953, largely through the efforts of Dean Fitzgerald, and

the Division was the Bursar, Brother Clement Francis, F.S.C, Evening established. Essentially it is the same as the regular day program.

The Evening Division offered majors in Accounting, Labor -Management,

to Marketing, and Economics. A minimum of six years was required

was awarded. complete the program and the B.B.A. degree The year 1961 marked the end of one phase of the Business

School. Now an established and respectable undergraduate School of

Business, Dean Fitzgerald saw his life's work complete and fittingly retired. Thus began phase two in the history of the Business School.

The reins were turned over to Brother Clement Francis

Charters, F.S.C., Associate Professor of Statistics and ex-Bursar.

Dean Francis was a man of enormous vision, though short in stature. He was a bundle of energy. One of the first projects he initiated was the

Curriculum Guidance Committee, composed of business leaders and educators, whose purpose was to advise the various department heads on the latest

business developments and to incorporate such principles in the program were they to be of pertinent nature.

Brother Francis was always sensitive to the student and he

therefore established the Dean's Advisory Council, a formal organ of

communication between the student and the administration composed of

the Presidents and Vice Presidents of all Business organizations. This

freedom of communication has made the Business School the most respected

of Schools on the campus in terms of its leadership structure.

1964 Always on the lookout for the most recent developments,

found Brother Francis creating the major in Quantitative Business

one few Analysis. At the present time, Manhattan is of the undergraduate

in Schools in the country to offer an undergraduate concentration

Association of Quantitative methods. In accordance with the Eastern

lowered credit Collegiate Schools of Business, Manhattan requirements

decision that student to 131 credits. In line with this was the every

in the use and applications in the School of Business show proficiency

of Data Processing and Computer equipment. 1965 saw the addition of International Business and

Industrial Management as concentrations. The Moral Tone in Advertising

Awards gained National Recognition because of the purpose and scope of the Awards. In 1965, we also saw Brother Francis take an active interest in the formation of Beta Alpha Mu Fraternity. In June of

1966, Brother Francis became seriously ill, an illness from which he never recovered. Brother Francis, Dean of the School of Business and

Faculty Moderator of Beta Alpha Mu, passed away on October 3, 1966, and thus ends phase two of The History of the School of Business. 10 THE RIVERDALE PRESS May 19, 1966 New Fraternity Formed At Manhattan College Manihattan College has announc its infancy, the fraternity has al ed the formation of a new fra ready sponsored several profes ternity, Beta Alpha Mu. The petition is expected to take place sometime late in the sum mer in hope of an early Novem ber installation. MthO'Uigh still in THE HISTORY OF BETA ALPHA MU FRATERNITY

For many years there was a prevalent feeling at Manhattan's School of Business that there was a vacuum in respect to fraternities on campus.

This vacuum was simple to explain there were no business fraternities or clubs open to all members of the School of Business. There were fraterni ties and clubs, but these were specialized in that they were restricted to particular majors, such as Marketing or Economics. It was obvious that a business fraternity, open to all members of the School of Business irregard- of their major, was definitely needed. This was the situation until Septem ber of 1964.

In September of 1964, the first concrete steps were taken. A self- appointed coimnittee of three began studying the broad objectives they wan ted this new fraternity to cover. The committee, consisting of Brother

Clement Francis F.S.C, Dean of the School of Business, Kenneth Nolan, a

senior, and Brendan Rocks, a junior, began making inquiries into the various national professional business fraternities. The-' choice was quickly narrow ed and among the remaining fraternities was Delta Sigma Pi. After further

investigation, the committee became very interested in Delta Sigma Pi but

due ts to the proximity of final examinations they decided to hold off on

their decision. The final consensus was that there should be a definite attempt to establish a Chapter of a national professional business frater nity on the campus of Manhattan College.

Careful analysis yielded the information that Delta Sigma Pi was the most suitable fraternity in that its objectives and policies were well with

for Manhattan's A new in the scope that the committee envisioned fraternity. and more successful attempt to establish a fraternity was undertaken in

August of 1965. Brother Francis and Brendan Rocks now came to the conclu

sion that Delta Sigma Pi was the best choice and that they would proceed

with plans to establish a Chapter of this Fraternity on the campus. Mr.

Rocks proceeded to contact both the Grand President, Mr. Marko, and the

Regional Representative, Mr. Groene. Mr. Rocks met with these two men and

returned to the campus with the aims of seeing a chapter of Delta Sigma Pi

on the campus. It was decided that it would be best to wait several weeks

after the opening of school before undertaking a campaign to stimulate in

terest in a national professional business fraternity.

As time passed, many students showed interest in the plans for es

tablishing a national fraternity in the Business School. An indoctrination

program, run by Mr. Rocks, included personal contacting with every student

organization leader in the School of Business; this program was designed to

find out how much sincere enthusiasm existed. When the first meeting was

called, approximately fifteen students responded. The only common goal among

them was the desire to see a chapter of a fraternity established. It was at

this point that Brother Francis withdrew from the formation of the frater

nity and left it up to this group.

The first order of business was to elect temporary officers. These me

would hold office until permanent elections could be held. These officers

were: President- Brendan Rocks Senior V. P. Robert Petrausch _ Exec. V.P.- Donald Butler Treasurer - Dennis Fitzpatrick Secretary -^- Ricky Burns Chancellor - Robert Pretina Historian - William Bricker

President Fitzpatrick' s house and Mr. Groene showed slides on Delta Sigma

time to begin work on the various phases of the petition in order to have

a head start when school reopened in September.

During the summer the brothers of Beta Alpha Mu held a tour of the

Data Processing facilities of Allstate Insurance Co. and had two beach

parties and a game. Each of these events was well attended and

showed that the fraternity was serious in its efforts.

September found plans being formulated for the coming semester and

the preparation of the histories for the petition well under way. September

BAM IS HERE !

The long awaited aspiration of the students of the School of Business has become a reality in recent weeks. A fraternity, open to all the students in the school of business, irregardless of their major, has been founded. This fraternity is Beta Alpha Mu. For some time it had been realized that there was a shortcoming of fraternities orientated to the school of business. The first steptowards the solution of the prob lem was recently taken by a group of students. The stu dents felt that Manhattan needed such a fraternity and they decided to do something about it. Under the auspices of Dean Francis and Breanda Rocks, President of the Businessmen's Association, a meeting was arranged with the national and regional directors of the business fraternity. Delta Sigma Pi. At this meeting the manner in which a chapter of this national fraternity could be started at Manhattan, was outlined. After this meeting, the necessary preliminary steps were undertaken by this group. They began by electing temporary officers and calling a general meeting at which applications were distributed to those interested. It ap peared that this was the organization that the students had long desired, as more than one hundred applied. They received the fraternity with enthusiasm beyond all ex pectations. It was decided by the President pro tempore, Brendan Rocks, that the fraternity would conduct its activities under the name of Beta Alpha Mu (BAM) until the time it received national recognition. At the present time a schedule of activities has been set up and all the applicants are being screened by a com

mittee to determine if they fulfill the requirements . Those accepted will be the charter members of Manhat tan's new business fraternity --a fraternity which all businessmen at Manhattan College can be proud of !

Mr. Charles Farrar Executive Director International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi 330 South Campus Avenue Oxford, Ohio

Dear Mr. Farrar:

I am very pleased to endorse the petition of Beta Alpha Mu of Manhattan College to become affiliated with the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi.

From all that I have been able to observe, there is an active student interest in such affiliation. Our local group carried out a full program of professional activities during the last academic year and plans another full schedule during 1966-67 Also, to indicate the interest of the membership, I might mention that its members met during the summer recess and took a con ducted tour of the data processing center of All State Insurance Company in White Plains, New York,

If granted full membership. Beta Alpha Mu might easily become one of the outstanding student organizations on the Manhattan College campus.

The application has my hearty and official endorse ment.
