AFN National Treaty Forum

Dakota Dunes Casino Whitecap Dakota First Nation March 26-27, 2013

PURPOSE

 This forum is open to all Treaty leadership and will provide an opportunity to reflect on recent developments, including the Prime Minister’s commitment on January 11, 2013 to a High Level Mechanism on Treaty Implementation, and full discussion on the required next steps.

 As the Assembly of is not a rights holder, the role of the AFN at this forum will be strictly to facilitate and support the discussion with Treaty rights holders as they scope out the key elements required for Treaty Implementation to occur.

 This forum is designed for focused discussion on important process requirements for Treaty Implementation to occur on a Treaty by Treaty basis.

OBJECTIVES

 Facilitate and support dialogue on the following:

o Important process requirements for Treaty Implementation;

o Specific activities and next steps to support Treaty Implementation on a Treaty by Treaty basis; and

o Possible Chiefs Task Force on Treaty Implementation as well as its scope, mandate and composition.

OUTCOMES

 Identification of process requirements, key aspects and options for a co-ordinated and strategic national approach on Treaty Implementation.

 Potential formulation of a Chiefs Task Force on Treaty Implementation.

 Identification of roles and responsibilities to support the development of a High Level working process for Treaty Implementation. Co-Chairs: AJ Felix and Ron Lameman AGENDA
