Summer 2011 2 Dear Brescians,

Welcome to the Summer 2011 edition of the Brescia NOW! Inside you will fi nd the President’s Donor Report as well as an overview of the latest news at Brescia. The highlight, of course, was our commencement ceremony on May 14, 2011, at Owensboro’s Riverpark Center. It is always a moment of intense pride for me as I see our students crossing the stage to receive their diploma. The smiles on their faces and the joy of their families underscore the great accomplishment they have achieved in earning a university degree.

Dr. James Voyles, Brescia alumnus and prominent Atlanta attorney, gave the commencement address challenging our students to use their liberal arts education to do great things. We were proud to confer on Dr. Voyles an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters.

Central to Dr. Voyles’ life is his spirit of service, especially in his efforts to give voice to the vulnerable members of our society. I’m proud that this value of servant leadership continues to be fostered at Brescia. Inside these pages you will read about the work of the Brescia University Habitat for Humanity chapter. The work of these students exemplifi es the energy and commitment that our students have in serving others. This is but one example of the immersive educational experience that is integral to the Brescia Difference.

I hope you enjoy reading about Brescia, our students, faculty and staff. None of this, of course, would be possible without your support. So, allow me to say thank-you. Because of your prayers, time, and fi nancial support, Brescia continues its mission of educating in the Ursuline tradition. Thank you!

Brescia NOW! Summer 2011 3 Commencement 2011 A New Chapter Begins

n a chilly, rainy Saturday morning, hundreds of people fi led into the RiverPark Center in O downtown Owensboro to celebrate the academic achievements of 116 graduates. Brescia University’s commencement was unique this year since for the fi rst time, graduates from our online programs traveled from as far away as Maryland, North Carolina, and Wyoming to attend. Degrees were awarded as such: one associate of science; 20 bachelors of art; 48 bachelors of science; 21 bachelors of social work; 16 masters of business administration; and 10 masters of science in curriculum and instruction. Bishop William F. Medley gave the invocation, and the 2011 class representative, Sagan Sette, was the student speaker.

Brescia NOW! Summer 2011 4 James E. Voyles ’65, Ph.D., JD, was the commencement speaker at this year’s graduation ceremony. Voyles also was awarded an honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters. Voyles encouraged the 2011 graduates to go forth, make a difference and accomplish all their goals. Voyles has spent the past thirty plus years working in the legal fi eld as attorney, legal scholar, university professor, and civil rights activist. He is the author of numerous professional publications and has represented a wide range of clients. Voyles’ most notable case involved the representation of 2,300 African-Americans in a discrimina- tion case which resulted in the largest employment settlement in the history of the United States. Most recently, he has been active in the entertainment industry, representing artists such as Usher and the Ray Charles Foundation. He is currently the senior partner of the Voyles Milhollin Law Firm.

n keeping with the direction of the Brescia University Strategic Plan, which states that we see the University “recognized as a moral and intellectual powerhouse with destination programs I that will draw students from near and far,” Brescia selected the School of Education and the William H. Thompson School of Business as our destination programs. Both of these programs refl ect a unique, educational experience with a focus on the liberal arts and our Ursuline heritage. In the School of Education, four students earned national recognition by scoring in the top 15% in the nation on their Praxis II exams. Every education student in the United States must pass the Praxis in their respective teaching fi elds. These students are Audrey Popham ’11, Erika Murphy ’11, Sondra Williams ’12, and Stacy Robertson ’12. Two new degree programs were added to the School of Education: a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education (IECE) and a Master of Science in Teacher Leadership (MSTL). The IECE program will benefi t childcare employees and those interested in working with children from birth through kindergarten including those with disabilities. In June, Brescia learned the Department of Education and the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Audrey Popham Authority both have approved the IECE degree for the KIDS (Kentucky Invests in Developing Success) Now Scholarship. Making dreams a reality. That is what Habitat for Humanity does for people every day across the United States. Locally, the Brescia University Habitat for Humanity Chapter has been doing its part to make a dream come true for an Owensboro family. Brescia’s H4H chapter has co-sponsored a house at 2314 West 9th Street.

The foundation of the home was poured in late February, and the building of the home was underway with student support by early April. This is the fi rst home that BU’s H4H chapter has co-sponsored. Since 1999, the chapter has been active in assisting with projects affi liated with H4H and in putting man-hours into other homes.

Club president during the time of the build, Emily Gatton ’11, said the purpose of the build was to show the community what the Brescia Difference is all about. “We wanted to prove to the community what the ‘Brescia Difference’ really is. I feel like we succeeded by pulling together to sponsor and build, not just a house, but a HOME, for such a deserving family.”

Over the course of the spring semester walls were raised and painted, and the fl ooring and appliances were installed. It typically takes 3-6 months for a house to be completed from start to fi nish. An offi cial house dedication took place on July 24, 2011.

Virginia Braswell, Owensboro-Daviess County H4H Executive Director, said the project should be fi nished by mid-July, complete with a closing and dedication. This is the 95th Habitat House in Owensboro. She said the family of four have been very active in preparing their home for the move. H4H requires that their families put in 350 hours of sweat equity either on their own home, someone else’s, or other H4H projects. Braswell said this particu- lar family has put in more than 400 hours at this point.

“Brescia University has had a long relationship with H4H. The past year has been one of the more active years and has been really outstanding,” said Braswell.

Brescia’s Habitat chapter had a goal of raising $5,000 during the spring semester, and Bras- well said the combined funds received from Brescia and co-sponsor, Owensboro Catholic High School, totaled nearly $10,000 toward the cost of the home. Braswell said they also received a $35,000 grant from the city, and Habitat was able to fund the remainder.

Preserving our Past through Conversation/ Oral History/Storytelling

Belinda Thomson ’72, associate professor of speech and drama, spent the entire Spring 2011 semester working on a project in McLean County, where her hometown of Calhoun is the county seat. Belinda grew up in Calhoun and left in 1968 to attend college. She says “genetics, exposure at a young age and practice have all combined to create my love for family stories and set the stage for my development as a storyteller. This combination of elements served as part of the impetus for my project to document and preserve, through videotaping, memories and stories of McLean County residents.” Belinda says during the spring semester, she spent Friday afternoons at the museum engaged in videotaping McLean County residents as they talked about growing up in the community. The project resulted in a set of 4 DVDs that approximately one hour each. Participants include both men and women who range in age from 60 to 89 years of age. Belinda also videotaped herself telling a selection of stories she wrote about growing up in Calhoun. Additionally, she compiled a booklet of her family stories for the museum. All of these materials are located in the museum at 540 Main Street in Calhoun and, as a part of their artifact collection, are available for viewing. Those interested in purchasing any of the DVDs can stop by the museum on Fridays until 4 pm. Belinda says special thanks go to the West Kentucky Genealogy Association who gave all of their records, offi ce equipment, and more to the museum last year.

Brescia NOW! Summer 2011 19 ALUMNI NEWS The Brescia University Alumni Association Board, under the new leadership of Jim Weafer ’02, is off and running with new ideas and plans to make the Alumni Association a stronger and more consistant voice for the alumni base.

During Honor’s Convocation this year in April, the Alumni Association gave out the Delbert S. Murphy Alumni Scholarship to Ashley Miller and the Alumni Student Award was given to Sagan Sette.

With the additions of fellow alumni Carl Lewis ’91, Jim Demaio ’95, Dette Wilson ’82, and Sabrina Grant ’05 to the Alumni Board, President Weafer and the rest of the Board are working hard on upcoming events like the 2011 Homecoming, which takes place September 16 and 17.

At this year’s Homecoming, we will honor two of our fellow alumni with the following awards: The Father Saffer Award and the Outstanding Alumni Award. These awards will be given at the Annual Meeting during Homecoming this year. Become a fan of Brescia University and Brescia University Alumni Association on Facebook for the most current and up-to-date information regarding Homecoming. The team of Jarred Bowman ’97, Jason Cox ’97, Father Larry Hostetter, and Charlie Kamuf ’62 fi nished in a tie for third place overall in a fi eld of more than forty teams.

Brescia NOW!! Summer 2011 2020 The Brescia Annual Fund had a record-breaking year in 2010-2011. Many milestones were reached, and the bar has been raised to a higher level of growth for the coming years thanks to overwhelming support. We surpassed our goal and increased the Brescia Annual Fund by more than 5% compared to last year. Brescia would not have been able to boast such wonderful news without YOU. There were more than 1,300 individuals from the Brescia community who believed in our mission and helped us pave the road to success. Because of your gifts, Brescia will be able to more fully meet the changing needs of our students to continue providing exceptional educational opportunities. Among other necessities, the Brescia Annual Fund provides fi nancial assistance to students who are pursuing a path to a brighter future.

GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade), Society of the Arch members, Board of Trustees, Faculty, Staff, alumni, and friends of Brescia all joined together to make 2010-2011 the best annual fund year on record. The Board of Trustees increased their giving by 29%, Society of the Arch membership increased by 18 members, and Faculty/Staff giving increased by 9%. These are huge increases that are possible truly because people believe in Brescia.

Amy French, Director of Annual Giving, attributes these successes to all the generous supporters of Brescia University in monetary support as well as through their willingness to enlighten others on the powerful mission of teaching and learning — empowering students to live the Brescia Difference. Amy says, “I believe that people around the Owensboro area and beyond are beginning to see the difference that Brescia graduates bring to their various careers and the communities in which they live thus encouraging others to support the university.” French looks forward to an even more successful year in 2011-2012.

< Denotes Deceased Brescia NOW! Summer 2011 29 Society of the Arch Recognition Dinner June 24, 2011

It was four short years ago that Brescia University established the Society of the Arch to recognize gifts of $1,000 or more to the Brescia Annual Fund. For 2010-2011, Brescia welcomed 18 new members into the Society of the Arch. This growth provides Brescia the ability to signifi cantly increase the Brescia Annual Fund goal each year. As membership in the Society has increased, so has our ability to seize opportunities, address priorities and invest in the areas that are making us a fi rst choice for an increasing number of students.

Thank you for choosing to invest in Brescia.

The pictures on this page were taken at the annual recognition dinner hosted by Fr. Larry Hostetter on June 24, 2011, at the Charles Medley Distillery.

Robert Brewster, From volunteer to executive director - transforming a community.

Robert Brewster, a 1975 alumnus of Brescia College, graduated with his English degree and then went on to do a year of service with the Glenmary Sisters of Covington at the prompting of the campus chaplain. Little did he know how this volunteer experience would change his life’s path or how he would end up utilizing his education at Brescia to transform a community. Because the 1960’s were times of great change, the people of Appalachia began migrating to Northern Kentucky in pur- suit of work and a better life for their families. In 1966, Reverend Bill Neuroth founded what was called the Brighton Street Center in a small storefront on the corner of 8th and Brighton Streets. In 1968, Bob Brewster began volunteer work at the Center. He began the year with few expectations but quickly realized he was on the path to the rest of his life. A few short months later he became the Center’s fi rst full time employee, and in 1969, he became the Executive Director. Since that time, Brighton Center has expanded its programs and services, which are offered in an effort to continue meet- ing the needs of the community. The Center has become one of Northern Kentucky’s most comprehensive agencies and has earned a national reputation for cutting edge initiatives and pioneering approaches that build on the people, physical assets, and hopes of the community. The Brighton Center strives to turn obstacles into possibilities through community efforts that are forged in their commit- ment to self-suffi ciency and driven by programs rooted in community values and fi nding proactive solutions. Their mission is to create opportunities for individuals and families to reach self-suffi ciency through support services, education and leadership. Through Bob’s leadership, the Brighton Center has grown to provide a uniquely comprehensive range of programs and services including family and work supports; fi nancial and homeownership services; workforce development services including education, employment and training programs; substance abuse recovery services for women; early childhood education; and neighborhood based programs including community organizing and housing development. Bob is passing the torch to the next generation of leadership at Brighton Center after 42 years of service. “Last year we served over 84,000 individuals through 38 programs. Our focus has always been meeting the needs of the community, and because of that, we have become their trusted friend.” As an agency, the Brighton Center has had 3,390 adults, who have become employed a minimum of 90 days, 941 individuals who have worked full-time with access to health insurance, and 710 individuals, who have earned a livable wage of at least 200% more than the poverty level. He attributes who he is today to Brescia University and the guidance of Sr. Ruth Gehres and other Ursuline Sisters who helped broaden his perspectives and mindset to see the injustices in the world. One memorable example was when he decided to ride the bus trip down to Selma for the sit-in under the leadership of Sister deChantel. He said that it was “quite the experi- ence“, and struggled to explain the turbulence at the time. He appreciates and respects everything that Brescia taught him about the church, about social injustices, and about the ways that one person can make a difference. He left Brescia feeling like he could truly make a difference and has truly exemplifi ed the Brescia Difference in everyone he has met in his work at the Brighton Center.
