vious enforcement that put the safety of other drivers and even officers at risk. Officers would have to run the red light behind the offender in order to catch up and pull them over. Now, officers can park motorcycles or the patrol cars in safer places that would allow them to safely track down the vehicle. Often they will patrol particular areas be- cause there may be a high volume of injury col- lisions taking place or residents are concerned about unsafe driving conditions. Niederhaus said he is grateful for the in- creased safety, but also said there are still some challenges with the system. For one, it can be a challenge to watch all at once the handheld screen, the signal light and the offender, al- though the device makes noise when a light turns yellow and red. In order to run a red light, he said, the driver must have crossed the limit line—the first line of the crosswalk or the white line if there is no crosswalk—after the light turned red. Another challenge still has to do with the safety issue. A single officer can monitor a couple of directions of traffic at once, but at other times they may have as many as six officers patrolling an intersection, Niederhaus said. One officer will use the MOLE device as a spotter and can alert another officer to pull over an offender. Pleasanton police have been working with Auspex Technologies for about two and a half years. Other communities—such as Arcadia in Southern California, and cities in Colorado and Florida—are said to be interested in and testing MOLE as well. N

Perfect pairing Pleasanton’s two wineries take home prized awards at Taste of Terroir BY EMILY WEST eople at the Palm Event Center last Thursday night didn’t seem to mind waiting in lines when the promise of gourmet food and wine Pwere at the end. Fourteen teams of a local winery and restaurant presented their idea of a perfect pairing and left it up to the hundreds of attendees to decide which team would reign supreme. While Pleasanton has fewer wineries than neighboring Livermore, it had quite the showing as Mitchell Katz and the Palm Event Center and Ruby Hill and Casa Real took home the top awards. In their second showing, having opened the facility last year, Casa Real and its Ruby Hill Winery took home the Judges’ Best award for its summertime braised pork with blueberry-chipotle barbecue sauce and carrot-ginger slaw served on a lettuce wrap and paired with their 2007 Estate Reserve Zinfandel. Clay Brunton, sous chef, and Adam R. Brown, executive chef of Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery served the Clay Branton, sous chef, and Adam R. Adding pork and the blueberry-chipotle sauce, he said, brought a level of sophistication to typical summer barbecue fare. “Everyone’s eyes lit up when we mentioned the blueberry,” Brown added. “The dish had robust flavors and I loved the vessel of the lettuce wrap. It added crunch and had great layers and complexity.” Last year’s People’s Choice winner Palm Event Center served a 2007 Sangiovese Rerserve from Mitchell Katz with a hearty muffuletta style em- panada with artisan mortadella, Toscano salumi and piquant ollye relish, created by Alex Olson. It garnered the attention of the judges, especially master sommelier Evan Goldstein who created a special award for the pairing, Most Creamaginative Award, saying that he didn’t want the cre- ativity and imagination to go unrecognized. “There were so many plots and subplots,” he said of the dish, which drew from Argentinean, New Orleans American and Italian influences. This year’s People’s Choice went to Pleasanton’s own Hap’s Original Steakhouse, with chef Wilson Miller preparing tostones with sweet chili prawn, whipped cream cheese, pineapple habenara jelly and cilantro. The spicy bite was cooled down with a sip of Phillip Wente’s 2007 Muscat Canelli from Murietta’s Well in Livermore. Also awarded were Wente Vineyards and its restaurant for the Best Ex- pression of Local Ingredients. Arthur Wall’s dish included house-cured duck prosciutto with fregola pasta salad, Brentwood corn, garden basil, sweet red onion, dried tomato and goat cheese, accompanied by their 2007 Nth Degree Pinot Noir from Arroyo Seco made by winemaker Karl Wente. Most Innovative went to Campo Di Bocce’s cherry and olive tapenade with lavender on a gorgonzola puff pastry, created by chef Michael Wogen, which was paired with Jim McGrail’s McGrail Vineyards’ 2005 Cabernet Sauvingnon. Other judges included Sara Schneider, the wine editor from Sunset Maga- zine, and Jessica Yadegaran, wine writer for the Bay Area News Group. N
