We are grateful to Dr Andrea Crowther from the South Australian Museum (SAM) for checking the opisthobranch and nudibranch collection at SAM, which enabled much of the content in Appendix 2 to be included. 2 MARINE SPECIES OF CONSERVATION INTEREST ON NORTHERN KANGAROO ISLAND - RESULTS OF 2013 FIELD WORK Part 1 - Marine Invertebrates SUMMARY In 2013, with assistance from the Australian Government’s Caring for our Country program, and DEWNR’s Natural Resources - Kangaroo Island (Kangaroo Island NRM Board), a joint field work was undertaken by Kangaroo Island Friend’s of the Sea, an NRM-supported community group which uses a standard marine monitoring method developed by Reef Life Survey program, to monitor the species composition of reef sites on Kangaroo Island; and South Australian Conservation Research Divers (SACReD), a community-based marine group which aims to learn more about the distribution and habitats of rarely recorded, endemic, and other marine species of conservation interest at sites along the northern coast of Kangaroo Island. Part of the field work aimed to contribute towards an understanding of the biodiversity of marine invertebrates in the KI area, so that populations of rare, uncommonly recorded and endemic species may be better conserved, and protected from threatening processes. The KI field work formed part of a larger, Statewide marine species research project in which SACReD has been involved since 2011. SACReD’s current searches of invertebrate fauna include taxa in Anthozoa (anemones and corals); Prosobranchia (sea snails); Opisthobranchs / Heterobranchia (sea slugs / nudibranchs); Platyhelminthes (flatworms); Nemertea (ribbon worms); Polychaeta (sea worms); Ascidiacea (ascidians / sea squirts), and several other groups. Between March 2013 and April 2013, 5 SACReD divers collectively spent more than 36 hours diving, at 8 subtidal reef sites and 1 jetty within the KI NRM region, and took more than 2,000 photographs of marine invertebrates. To date, 10 marine taxonomists and other specialists from around Australia have assisted SACReD’s rare and endemic marine invertebrates’ project in KI NRM region, by offering advice, and identifying macro-photographs of invertebrates taken by SACReD divers. A list of unidentified species has been prepared for which samples will later be collected and lodged at the South Australian Museum, for transfer to various taxonomists in south-eastern Australia. Results of the project to date have included records of taxa apparently not previously recorded anywhere else (i.e. “new”, undescribed species); undescribed species of tropical affinity (some of which may not have previously been recorded in SA), and range extensions for rarely recorded species (previously known from only one or two records). Our group’s field investigations, complemented by discussions with marine taxonomists, have helped to improve the state of knowledge about the distribution and habitat of a number of rarely recorded and endemic marine invertebrates in South Australia, as well as rarely recorded tropical species, and several undescribed and previously unrecorded taxa. To date, targetted searches for marine invertebrate have been concentrated in few areas on Kangaroo Island, mainly the coves and bays of the northern and north-eastern coast. For many parts of the KI NRM region, little is known of the rarely recorded and endemic marine invertebrate fauna, other than the area between Western River Cove and Snug Cove, and parts of the north-eastern bays, where intensive collecting and photography occurred over several years during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Additionally, collecting trips to gather opisthobranchs for taxonomic description at museums occurred during the 1970s, and “specimen shells” (various species of valuable gastropod mollusc) have also been collected from sites off north-eastern Kangaroo Island, particularly during the 1980s and 1990s. A high but currently unquantifiable number of apparently rare species are likely to be more widespread but have not yet been sampled due to their small size and/or cryptic habits. Without substantial survey and collecting effort, it is not possible to determine true “rarity” over any spatial scale, or to produce reliable systematic maps of the range of various invertebrate species. It is planned that the next stage of this project will involve searches, macro- photography and specimen collection (for taxonomic identification) at areas within the KI NRM region which have not previously been searched, including more remote locations, and areas within and outside of the sanctuary zones of marine protected areas. 3 . Paolo Cesana Nella vasta famiglia delle Cypree, spiccano tra le ''medio-grandi'' forme australiane, quelle appartenenti alla ''tribù'' delle umbiliinae; consideriamo quindi il genere Umbilia armeniaca con le sue forme e/o sottospeci. La Umbilia armeniaca armeniaca (Verco, J. C. 1912) è la specie base, che vive sui fondali molli, in prevalenza tra le alghe, in acque profonde, sempre al di sotto dei 25 m. E' specie del sud e sud-vest dell'Australia, che va da Perth ad Adelaide. L'animale ha, sembra, una dieta mista, un po’ detritivora (detriti e residui) e un po’ spongivora. La sua conchiglia è simile a quella della sua cugina hesitata, ma più enflata e leggera, con la parte anteriore meno ''affusolata''. La fossula è più marcata, poco depressa; la dentatura è poco evidente e assente verso la estremità posteriore sul lato columellare, ben marcata invece nella parte anteriore; l'apertura è molto curvata verso l'estremità posteriore. La colorazione varia dal raro bianco al rosa salmone (tipico) con lievi maculature dorsali e sui lati, la base è sul beige-rosato o aranciato con un'rea più colorata dal lato columellare. La conchiglia ha una misura che varia tra i 65 e i 120 mm. circa. Passiamo ora alle poche sottospeci o ''forme'' che per le lievi differenze che si possono riscontrare fra loro, farò una breve carrellata di esse; - la Umbilia armeniaca westralica (Raibaudi Massilia, 1980) globosa, ha forma e caratteristica simile alle altre armeniache, la colorazione lucida varia dal bianco-giallastro al salmone rosato, al bruno, con sparse maculazioni varie sul dorso e i lati; come dice il suo nome, vive a sud ovest dell'Australia, la conchiglia è lunga circa 70 - 100 mm.

Tasmania may be considered fairly rich in recent mol- luscan species, as she possesses nearly 700 marine forms, with about 100 terrestrial and fresh-water kinds besides. Very many o* ^e species in all branches are extremely small, requiring much careful search in order to obtain them, and microscopical examination to reveal their char- acteristics, their beauties of form, sculpture, and colouring. But such work is well repaid by the results, whilst, doubt- less, there are still various species to be discovered in the less well-known parts of the island, for many of the recog- nised forms are very local in their habitats, and, in numerous cases, their minuteness renders them so difficult to find that even an experienced collector niay overlook them. On the other hand, some of the marine species afford a strong contrast by the great size to which they at- tain, the most remarkable being Valuta mamilla (Gray), which is a foot long when full grown, and broad in propor- tion ; but adult specimens are rarely found in good preserva- tion. The young examples are much prettier as regards colour and markings, having brown bands and dashes on a creamy-yellow ground externally, -while the interior is of a rich yellow, and highly enamelled ; the large mamillary nucleus (which was thought to be a deformity in the first specimen discovered) is always a striking characteristic, giving a curious appearance to the very young shells.

KROUPA (Brno) ein Gehäuse der Ranellidae-Art Cabestana cutacea (LINNE 1767) (Abb. 1, 2) gefunden. Das Gehäuse besitzt noch Reste des Periostrakums, hat aber viele Merkmale die darauf schliessen lassen, des es schon länger tot im Wasser lag. Zum Vergleich werden je ein Exemplar von Cabestana cutacea aus Italien (Abb. 3,4) und Spanien (Abb. 5,6) abgeblidet. Abbildung 7-12 zeigen die verwandten Cabestana dolaria (LINNE 1767), von der westafrikanischen Küste bis Südafrika vorkommend und Cabestana dolaria africana (A. ADAMS 1855) aus Südafrika. STEYN & LUSSI (1998) bilden auf Seite 74 unter Nr. 272 zwei Exemplare als Cabestana cutacea ab. Das linke Gehäuse ist sicher Cabestana dolaria africana zuzuordnen, das rechte Cabestana dolaria. KILBURN (1984) sah dolaria als nicht valide Art an, HENNING & HEMMEN (1993) stellten sie als Unterart zu cutacea. In der CLEMAM database (http://www.somali.asso.fr/clemam/biotaxis.php?X=14283) vom 10.05.2005 wird C. africanum als Synonym von C. dolaria geführt.     NUDIBRANCH NEIGHBORHOOD: THE DISTRIBUTION OF TWO NUDIBRANCH SPECIES (CHROMODORIS LOCHI AND CHROMODORIS SP.) IN COOK’S BAY, MO’OREA, FRENCH POLYNESIA GWEN HUBNER Anthropology, University of California, Berkeley, California 94720 USA Abstract. Benthic invertebrates are vital not only for the place they hold in the trophic web of the marine ecosystem, but also for the incredible diversity that they add to the world. This is especially true of the dorid nudibranchs (family Dorididae), a group of specialist predators that are also the most diverse family in a clade of shell-less gastropods. Little work has been done on the roles that environment and behavior play on distribution patterns of dorid nuidbranchs. By carrying out habitat surveys, I found that two species of dorid nudibranchs (Chromodoris lochi and Chromodoris sp.) occupy different habitats in Cook’s Bay. Behavioral interaction tests showed that both species orient more reliably toward conspecifics than toward allospecifics. C. lochi has a greater propensity to aggregate than Chromodoris sp. These findings indicated that the distribution patterns are a result of both habitat preference and aggregation behaviors. Further inquiry into these two areas is needed to make additional conclusions on the forces driving distribution. Information in this area is necessary to inform future conservation decisions. Introduction Gujarat has a long coastline of about 1650 km, which is mainly due to the presence of two gulfs viz. the Gulf of Khambhat (GoKh) and Gulf of Kachchh (GoK). The coastline has diverse habitats such as rocky, sandy, mangroves, coral reefs etc. The southern shore of the GoK in the western India, notified as Marine National Park and Sanctuary (MNP & S), harbours most of these major habitats. The reef areas of the GoK are rich in flora and fauna; Narara, Dwarka, Poshitra, Shivrajpur, Paga, Boria, Chank and Okha are some of these pristine areas of the GoK and its surrounding environs.
