Dear Editor, I am writing this letter in light of the current exposure of the “history of deception” and questionable financial controls at the suicide bereavement charity, Console. At the heart of Console and similar charities is a dedicated and professional psychotherapy staff providing an exceptionally good service. A large proportion of these staff are members of the IACP. Our organisation represents the interests of both client and psychotherapist. Our core values include one of “Valuing the Individual” and I would ask that in relation to this we could reappraise the value we place on our membership. We cannot avoid the conversation of how our membership, in particular our pre- accredited members, are seen, valued and treated across the Charity Sector. While some charities respect and value our member’s contribution there is growing evidence that others regard our pre accredited membership as a steady and cheap unregulated service. This is wrong and money that is specifically donated to fund counselling services is going elsewhere. I want to be clear, this letter is not about pre - accredited psychotherapists versus accredited psychotherapists. And it needs to be understood that what impacts one group affects the other. Charities who predominately engage pre- accredited psychotherapists exclude accredited members from the possibility of long term paid work. Also, in this case, the client is deprived of a more versatile and experienced service. The IACP has the opportunity to put forward guiding principles and policy as regards to how it wants its membership treated as they engage with the Charity Sector. There is a significant level of separation and detachment between Head Office and the members on the ground as outlined in the Strategic Review. While the recent “Purpose Statement” is welcome, action is needed. It is simply not good enough anymore to not get involved in light of what is happening. Although the newly established Charity Regulatory Authority is attempting to monitor the sector it is obvious that it is under resourced and lacks power. I suggest that part of what the IACP can do is to inform the regulator of concerns regarding the treatment of our members. Regulation must include wage standards for all of our membership. Maybe we could be proactive in terms of suggesting minimum payment rates for pre- accredited members. We might consider proposing a need for charities to engage one accredited member to match a stated number of pre-accredited members. This would create a balance to our membership’s involvement in the Charity Sector. It would also open up opportunities and increase morale. Last but not least it would provide those seeking counselling with a more complete and experienced service. I am aware that I am presenting proposals that need time to be digested. My hope is that this letter will open up a discussion on how we can be proactive on the issues presented. There is a need to create a balance between IACP psychotherapy support for the Charity Sector and the protection of all our members. This means respecting what we offer to charities including placing a value on our work in terms of fees. In saying that I want to be clear, this is not simply about money but about respecting our profession and maintaining professional standards. To conclude, I am not a lone voice in terms of what I have outlined in this letter. This is a conversation we need to have and the IACP membership provides the perfect platform for this. I look forward to our membership’s response to this letter.

Dear Members, From the Hopefully, you have all had a chance to rest and recuperate over the summer and are feeling rested before all the work starts again. For those of us that worked over the summer remember to look after your self-care for the year ahead. Best practice and professionalism demand that we look after ourselves in order that we can support our clients. We have been busy on the Board in dealing with the day to day running of the association as well as bringing the Strategy Review work to Stage three. The Board spent two days in a working environment looking at what was needed to fulfil the new purpose of the Association. This brainstorming brought up a whole new way of looking at the profession and when complete will ensure a profitable way forward for both the members and the association. This will be communicated to you as we finalise our thoughts and consult with the Regions as before and when Moira Sharkey complete we will bring the package to you for a final decision. As communicated in the last newsletter we have advertised for a new Head of National Member Services. This advert was in the Irish Times and in their executive advertising website online. The advert has resulted in a good number of applications and the process of reviewing the applicants will have commenced when you read this. We have been requested by Án Garda Siochána to trial their online vetting process. To facilitate the change- over we slowed down the rollout of the next tranche of members to be vetted. The next batch of members is now in the vetting process. To date nearly two thousand have been or are going through the process with over a thousand fully completed and granted clearance. Some issues have arisen and an appeals committee consisting of three members and an extern have been put in place. The new appeals committee are being supported by a legal expert before they sit to look at the appeals that are pending to ensure fairness and natural justice prevails. In order to enhance communication, the Board have created a Regional Director Role. Sheila Haskins has been tasked to build the relationships between the regions and National Office. Sheila has met and discussed plans with six of the eight regions to date and received a very positive response from those she has met. This work will continue and part of this will be bringing the regions into the conference in a more active way. An IACP Regional Award is being introduced to take account of the huge amount of voluntary work that some members carry out for the counselling profession and the community. Nominations for this award will be through the Regional Committees. Hopefully, you have had a chance to avail of the free workshops, Narcissism and Complicated Grief, that are being rolled out for those Regions that have taken up the offer, feedback is that they are worth attending. Presently, I am looking at sourcing two new free workshops for 2017 and these will be announced in due course through the Regional Committees. The conference planning is well under way and we hope you can attend. The conference theme will be “Professional Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy” keeping with the new IACP purpose. We will be putting out a call for papers as a new item on the programme. Importantly, we have taken cognisance of your feedback last year and put them into practice for this our second national conference. The conference will be held on the 4th and 5th November in the Sheraton Hotel in Athlone, and the cost is much reduced to make it more affordable for members. A big thank you to Carol Murray, Office Manager, for the amount of work she is putting into this on our behalf. Lots more to be discussed at the round tables and panel discussions at the conference so hopefully we will see you there. Good luck with the work and remember that self care.

He teaches on the course along with many years working with people with Asperges/Autism. Kirsten Hurley is the programme co-ordinator for the the Certificate and Diploma course in Autism studies in UCC and lectures and tutors on these programmes.Along with Diarmuid she has presented many workshops on this topic. Kirsten herself has a diagnosis of Asperges syndrome. The workshop will be presented on information and will be interactive. Workshop Outline: Some of the areas to be addressed include: • What is ASD. • Recognising Asperges/ASD in the Therapy room. • Creating the right therapeutic space for the client with Asperges/ASD. • The client with ASD and the sensory issues - public and private spaces. • Working with a client with ASD - breaking some myths (eg lack of empathy). • The client with ASD and family systems and relationships. • Bullying and the specificity of its legacy for the client. • People with ASD and fun.

She worked in the Trauma Unit of St. Brendan’s psychiatric hospital, and has worked specifically with victims of narcissistic abuse both in her private practice and internationally for many years. Workshop Outline: This workshop primarily concentrates on looking at “narcissistic personality traits” among the normal population - behaviours and attitudes that may or may not go far enough to warrant a clinical diagnosis. However, this behaviour is bad enough to cause total destruction to unsuspecting people as they try to live their lives. This common type narcissism is the cause of most hardship done to individuals within families, romantic relationships, friendships, and the workplace. It is these victims of narcissistic abuse that end up in the therapy daily. However, most therapists are ill equipped to recognise unhealthy narcissism in the therapy room, or the effects of narcissistic abuse on the victim. In this workshop we shall discover:- 10.00 - 11.30 A Brief Understanding of “Narcissism”? • Examine the 9 DSM criteria for identifying a narcissistic personality? (1) Grandiosity, (2) Power, (3) Special, (4) Attention, (5) Entitlement (6) Exploitative, (7) A lack of empathy, (8) Envy, (9) Arrogant and haughty behaviours. • Demonstrate why narcissists need and crave “NARCISSISTIC SUPPLY”? 11.30 - 12.00 Tea Break 12.00 - 1.30 Group Work: Do an analysis of a character sketch case. • Using a short case study (as a group) we shall use “forensic psychology” to make a psychological profile and critical examination of an unknown individual (Gerard). We shall be using the 9 DSM Criteria (learned earlier) to deduce whether this client is displaying normal healthy narcissism, or abnormal pathological narcissism. • Clearly this information becomes very important for knowing how to move forward in the therapeutic process with a narcissist, or when working with the victims of narcissistic abuse. • Q & A Time

She holds a B.A. (Hons) Degree in Psychology and Theology and is a qualified accredited Psychotherapist, Master NLP Practitioner, Master of Clinical Hypnosis, a Life & Business Coach, Supervisor, Shamanic Counsellor, Curandera Practitioner, and Transpersonal Therapist. Christine continues to engage in continuous on-going Professional Development in order to bring a vast resource of learning to her work. She works in a Humanistic and Integrative way, incorporating a Person Centered approach, and utilizes a range of modalities (Western & Eastern) where appropriate. Workshop Outline: Narcissism is on a continuum, a spectrum of behavior that ranges from healthy normal narcissism to extreme pathological narcissism. Ann Dodd holds an Msc in Bereavement studies and has a particular interest in gender differences in grieving. Workshop Outline: This workshop will provide participants with a strong grounding in Complicated Grief (CG). CG is a largely misunderstood disorder which affects about 10% of bereaved people. It is characterised by serious impairment in functioning and an inability to engage satisfactorily with everyday life. A growing body of evidence indicates that CG does not respond well to traditional supportive counselling and newly developed protocols, such as Shear’s CGT, are showing improved outcomes for this population.

Author of To be Met as a Person: the Dynamics of Attachment in Professional Encounters. Karnac London, co-author of The Psychodynamics of abuse: the cost of fear, Jessica Kingsley, and joint author with Dr Dorothy Heard and Dr Brian Lake of Attachment Therapy with Adolescents and Adults: theory and practice post Bowlby 2009. Presented with the Award for Vision, Innovation, Dedication and Achievement (VIDA) in 2004 by the Group Psychotherapy Association of Southern California in appreciation of her contribution to the field of psychotherapy. Workshop Outline: This workshop will explore the developments made by Dorothy Heard and Brian Lake to the work of John Bowlby. Participants will hear about a Restorative Process that becomes activated once a threat to wellbeing has been experienced by an individual. This Restorative Process consists of the interaction of 7 independent biologically-based goal-corrected systems. Participants will also be introduced to the practice developed by Una McCluskey which she has called Exploratory Goal-Corrected Psychotherapy (EGCP). Assessment tools will be provided during the day and will be used in the afternoon during the application to practice session.

She has taught and written extensively in the area of loss and grief and was awarded the title of Fellow in Thanatology by ADEC (Association of Death, Education & Counselling) for her contribution to the field. Ann Dodd holds an MSc in Bereavement Studies and has a particular interest in gender differences in grieving. Workshop Outline: Complicated grief is a largely misunderstood disorder which affects 2%-5% of bereaved people. About 290,000 people are bereaved in Ireland every year, and between 3,500 and 7,000 people are at risk of developing complicated grief. It is now recognised as a mental health issue and has been included in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. Research has indicated that a treatment approach such as that developed by American bereavement expert Dr Kathy Shear - which addresses the impediments that keep grief from being integrated into someone’s life, is effective in helping people come to terms with a difficult reality and facilitates a return to a good level of functioning. Grief never goes away entirely, but it can be transformed and integrated so it no longer dominates someone’s life and they can again experience joy and satisfaction. In this workshop therapists will learn how to apply the Shear approach so they can learn how to help their client to get the natural healing process activated so that the grief that was acute becomes integrated in their life.

DIPLOMA IN SUPERVISION: Relational Model JANUARY 2017 to JUNE 2018 The core theoretical model on this course is a Gestalt Relational Model. Participants will be introduced to the various tasks of Supervision in a theoretical and experiential manner. Core Gestalt concepts such as, mindful awareness in the here and now, the co-creation of relationship and the relational field will be elaborated on and practised. Counselling Suicidal and Self Harming Clients by Athol Henwick

Athol is a registered psychologist with more than 12 years working specifically with people at risk of suicide or self harm. Currently he co-ordinates the Self Harm Intervention Programme in the South East of Ireland managing 21 counsellors with regards to working with at risk clients. He also delivers training in Understanding Self Harm developed by the National Office of Suicide Prevention as well as Skills Training on Risk Management (STORM) developed by the University of Manchester. The course will aim to make participants more confident in working with clients at risk by discussing current thinking with regards to risk management, assessment, effective self care and boundary management. It will also address attachment styles and how these may affect the assessment of risk as well as evidence based interventions.

This workshop/seminar is suitable for trainee counsellors as well as experienced practitioners.
