HYMN OF PRAISE Thy strong word did cleave the darkness EBENEZER PRAYER TO MARY, (October 4-14) Today marks the conclusion of our Novena of Prayer to Mary, Mother of the Church.

Mary, Mother of the Church, we stand before you shaken by the scandal and division in the Church that we love.

We pray for victims of abuse, whose trust was betrayed and whose innocence was shattered by members of the clergy. We pray for those whose suffering was ignored and for those who were silenced or disbelieved.

We pray for Church leaders, that by putting the needs of the vulnerable first, by acting with transparency, and by always holding themselves accountable to God and to the People of God they may regain the trust that has been broken.

We pray for ourselves, that the darkness and confusion we feel may give way to light. May we find the way to justice, unity, healing, and hope, through your Son, Jesus, our Lord. Amen.

Presider: Mary, refuge of sinners, ALL: pray for us. Presider: Mary, comfort of the troubled, ALL: pray for us. Presider: Mary, Mother of the Church, ALL: pray for us.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 24 7:00pm | Holy Names Room 907 Columbia Street

On October 14, Blessed Oscar Romero, the Archbishop of San Salvador martyred in 1980, will be canonized in Rome. By some aspects he appears a typical candidate for sainthood, but his martyrdom marks a modern model of holiness. Both his life and his words announced the Gospel and the Vatican II's vision of the Church to the people of El Salvador, and now to the People of God throughout our world.

JOE HASTINGS, M.DIV, is Director of Faith Formation at St. Leo Parish in Tacoma. He recently served as a Maryknoll Lay Missioner in El Salvador, and previously served as an educator with Catholic Relief Services, connecting US Catholics with the agency's relief and development work around the world.

A Parable by Nathaniel Hawthorne Monday, October 29, 2018 7:00pm Holy Names Room, Pastoral Outreach Center

“Lift the veil but once, and look me in the face!”

The respectable Reverend Hooper comes forth from his house one morning with a black veil concealing his face. This simple action shocks his quiet New England village. What does the veil mean? Does it conceal some disfigurement? Does it point to a secret grief—a secret sin? This 1832 story by the great American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne explores the question of how well we know each other—or if we can. Both spooky and profoundly spiritual, it is the perfect reading in Halloween week. Scott Webster will read the story aloud. Corinna Laughlin will provide with introduction and commentary.

All are welcome!

If you wish to read the text in advance, you can find the story online at https:// www.gutenberg.org/files/13707/13707-h/13707- h.htm#minister. Copies are available in the Cathedral Bookstore as well.

St. James Cathedral 804 Ninth Avenue, Seattle | www.stjames-cathedral.org Solemn Mass of All Souls Friday, November 2, 2018 | 7:30pm

It is a holy and a wholesome thought to pray for the dead that they might be absolved from their sin. (2 Maccabees 12:45‐46)

Father Michael G. Ryan will preside at the solemn Mass of All Souls. During this Mass, we pray for all our beloved dead. In a special way, we remember those who have been buried from the Cathedral during the past year, as well as all our deceased parishioners and benefactors. The parish death registers, reaching back more than a century, as well as the parish book of remembrance in which parishioners have been recording names for the past several weeks, are carried in the entrance procession.

The music features Mozart’s sublime Requiem, under the direction of Joseph Adam, Director of Music, with the Cathedral Choir of St. James, Soloists, and the Cathedral Chamber Orchestra. All are welcome.

We are the cathedral for the Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle and its Archbishop, The Most Reverend J. Peter Sartain. We are also a parish church for a vibrant faith community with a long history that reaches back to Seattle’s early days. We are an inner-city parish with an outreach to many who live on the edge of poverty and loneliness. We are a diverse community that welcomes, accepts, and celebrates the differences we all bring. We exist in the heart of the city, yet sometimes our parishioners come from considerable distances to worship here. St. James Cathedral is a crossroads where ideas and challenges both old and new are explored in the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Our cathedral is also the center for many cultural and ecumenical events which both reflect and help to shape the fabric of a vital metropolitan community. Above all, St. James Cathedral is a community of prayer.
