Amen. 03 The Message of Fatima and the Ten Commandments The Ninth Commandment

“You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.” (Deuteronomy 5:18). The Ninth Commandment directs us to purity of heart and forbids lust of the eyes. As Jesus said, “Everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (Matthew 5:28). In the Old Testament, adultery was a capital offense (Deuteronomy 22:22). The Lord shows the gravity of adultery when He hyperbolically recommended tearing out an eye or severing a hand rather than sin mortally and incur the punishment of eternal damnation. (Matthew 5:29-30). “It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into Gehenna.” (Matthew 5:30). Sister Lúcia writes that there is “so much disregard of this commandment in the world today that I ask myself if it is even worthwhile talking about it? The answer is in the affirmative; because, even if the whole world is drowning in the abyss, the word of God remains, repeating: “You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.” * Lúcia quotes Biblical passages that underline the seriousness of this sin. Let us look at some of them. “What God has joined together, no human being must separate.” (Matthew 19:6). “Are you unaware … that the law has jurisdiction over one as long as one lives? Thus a married woman is bound by law to her living husband….” (Romans 7:1-3). “Be sure of this, that no immoral or impure or greedy person, that is, an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.” (Ephesians 5:5-7). “Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take Christ’s members and make them the members of a prostitute? Of course not!” (1 Corinthians 7:15). “Why should I pardon you? Your children have forsaken me, they swear by gods that are no gods. I fed them, but they commit adultery; to the prostitute’s house they throng. They are lustful stallions, each neighs after the other’s wife. Should I not punish them for this?—oracle of the LORD; on a nation like this should I not take vengeance?” (Jeremiah 5:7-9).

Adultery involves taking possession of “someone who belongs to, or has been entrusted to, another.” Thus, adultery also breaks the Seventh Commandment. King David broke the Ninth Commandment when he looked with lust upon Bathshe- ba, the Sixth and Seventh when he had relations with her, and the Fifth when he arranged to have her husband killed. But God was merciful and sent the prophet Nathan to David. David repented, did penance, and submitted to God’s chastise- ments. (2 Samuel chapters 11 and 12). In the New Testament, King Herod took to himself the wife of his brother Philip. rebuked him. But instead of repenting as King David did, Herod executed John who earned the palm of martyr- dom. (Mark 9:17-29). The grace of Christ assists us so that we “may prove [ourselves] in the struggle of Christian life. ** The Catechism instructs us to fight against concupiscence or the strong tendency in our weakened human nature to commit sin. Especially intense is carnal concupiscence (cultivating thoughts and desires about actions forbidden by the Sixth Commandment). We need to battle against these inclinations by exercising the virtue of chastity and by modesty in our choice of clothing. Sister Lúcia says that clothing protects us against sin. Clothing is “a sign of penance for sin committed, and a punishment for it, [and a reminder] of the laws of God.”*** Adam and Eve were ashamed, so they covered themselves with fig leaves. (Cf. Genesis 3:1-24). The Lord did not think this was enough, so He gave them skins to cover their bodies. Those who appear indecently dressed are an incentive to sin, and so are responsible not only for their own sins but also for those that others may commit because of them. [Indecent fashions in clothing are] a trick of the devil, a clever trap in which the devil catches souls, in the same way as hunters catch game in the woods and fields. … Modest clothing … is a distinguishing mark setting us apart in the stream of immorality and enabling us to be, for the world, true witnesses of Christ.

Next Week: The Tenth Commandment
