    HIGH DESERT VOICES April 2017 News and Information published by and for Volunteers HDM: After Hours By Heather Duchow, Newsletter Writer Nearly 60 people came out to “celebrate the tail end of winter” at the HDM: After Hours event on March 10. Lovely spring-like weather on that Friday seemed to confirm that winter in the high desert would finally come to an end. Some people who had signed up for the event in advance were probably kept away by the sunshine and relative warmth, but several impromptu visitors made up the difference. Volunteer Tom Lyon greeted everyone at admissions with a smile. The inviting sounds of jazz duo Stone & Plankey drew guests in. Vocalist Clairon Stone and guitarist Jason Plankey put their spin on classics like “Crazy” and “Summertime.” Visitors found their way to the bar in front of the Silver Sage Museum Store windows, at the far end of the Collins Gallery, where Tyson Baird, the events manager, poured local libations. A nice selection of Oregon beer and wine was offered. Guests nibbled on snacks selected from an assortment of fruit, cheese, and crackers. Folks seemed to enjoy the setting in the Collins Gallery, surrounded by the photographs of the newly opened Legendary Landscapes exhibit. In addition to enjoying the Legendary Landscapes exhibit, most guests explored WWII: High Desert Home Front and The Buzzsaw Sharks of Long Ago. This event was a great opportunity to really savor these exhibits without a crowd. When not viewing exhibits, guests gathered in small groups around cocktail tables to chat or listen to music.

Visitors and residents frequently ask if there is a book on Sunriver, things to do, things about, and things to see. Karen Leedom’s book is told in lively verse and goes all over Sunriver highlighting the many attractions of our High Desert Community. This book will delight both children and adult. She uses the alphabet as a theme, A is for Camp Abbot. On one side the book shows a very nice rendering of Camp Abbot, on the other it gives historical detail. Of course at B, Sunriver’s very popu- lar bike trails are highlighted with a clever rendering. M is for Mount Bachelor and N is for the Sunriver Nature Center. Sharc is the subject at S and V takes in the Village. Throughout the book Leedom has included a plethora of things to see (Deer, Eagle, and Aspen), things to do (biking, rafting, golfing, playing tennis, listening to Jazz, etc.), and the surrounding areas (lakes, caves, forests). At each letter she presents a rhyme as well as interesting facts. For instance, did you know the largest pon- derosa pine in the USA is found in La Pine State Park and probably over 500 years old? The book works as a guide to things to do around Sunriver, information on the area, or a short cof- fee table book with attractive illustrations sure to be of interest to visitors.

    HIGH DESERT VOICES March 2017 News and Information published by and for Volunteers New Exhibit Highlights World War II by Dave Price, High Desert Museum Volunteer The High Desert Museum’s new exhibit, World War II: The High Desert Home Front, opened to the public on Saturday, Janu- ary 28. The exhibit commemorates the 75th anniversary of Amer- ica’s entry into World War II. Its displays highlight wartime ac- tivities that took place in the high desert country of the western United States as well as the war's long-term impact on the region. The Museum opened its new World War II exhibit on January 27 with an exclu- sive evening social event for Museum members and their guests. The evening program included an opportunity to preview the exhibit, a social hour with excellent hors d'oeuvres, and a special lecture by Dr. David del Mar. Dr. del Mar is a prominent historian from Portland State University. His brief lecture introduced the Museum’s World War II exhibit, highlighting how the war altered the economy and culture of the high desert region. Approxi- mately 350 people attended the evening event, which was free for Museum members. The exhibit itself is excellent. It is expected to be one of the Museum’s most popular programs in quite some time. As a result, the exhibit is scheduled to remain open through September 4, a much longer run than most of the Museum’s temporary exhibits. According to Laura Ferguson, the Museum’s c Curator of Western History, “World War II touched virtu- ally every American, from the soldiers on the front lines to the men and women who expanded productivity at home to meet wartime demands.

    OldSmokeys Newsletter Newsletter of the Pacific Northwest Forest Service Retirees—Spring 2009 President’s Message—John Nesbitt I wish to thank all OldSmokeys for allowing me to be your president the last one and one-half years. As John Poppino told me when I was elected President Elect, “Don’t worry about being the President, this outfit runs itself. Good ideas surface, the Board argues, everyone is heard, and the right decision is made.” It has been a real pleasure serving you, and I know we all look forward to Bruce Hendrickson’s time in the chair starting in May. Please mark your calendars for two upcoming and important OldSmokeys events. On May 17 we will hold the Annual Meeting and Banquet, and on August 14 we will celebrate our summer picnic. The times and details can be found elsewhere in this newsletter. Also, there will be a national U.S. Forest Service reunion in Missoula, Montana, in September. Many OldSmokeys are planning to attend, so there will be lots of opportunities for car pooling, or maybe even hiring a bus. As with the banquet and picnic, more details can be found in this newsletter. Our Board wants all of you to know how much we appreciate those who have produced our two latest books. Thanks for the first, an anthology of personal stories about Forest Service life in Oregon and Washington from 1905 to 2005 entitled We Had An Objective in Mind published by the Pacific Northwest Forest Service Association (PNWFSA) itself in 2005, go to a host of OldSmokeys led by Rolf Anderson.
