JUNE 2007

COMMODORE’S CORNER What a glorious month May was for sailing (and changing diapers)! The weather couldn’t have been better for the Cape Henry Cup and my hat’s off to the 20 BBSA members who competed as well as the 7 members who received trophies (listed later in this issue). Many thanks to Mitch Brindley, ODU Sailing Coach, for the use of the ODU Sailing Center for the well-attended potluck dinner and awards presentation. Mitch let us use the facility on the eve of the ICSA Women’s National Championship which ODU hosted the following day. Thanks again, Mitch!

Megan, Michael, and I made the land cruise to York River Haven on Memorial Day weekend to enjoy snacks and drinks with some of the members by the pool during the weekend’s cruise. I heard 9 boats made the trip (more to follow later in this issue as well).

Team Almond also made a showing (along with 7 boats) at the Broad Bay Regatta on June 9th and would personally like to thank the Race Committee of George Treiber, Bill Mellen, and Mary Moore. Also many thanks to Nina Treiber for the wonderful spread of food following the races. We enjoy the support you all show for our One-Design program! Congratulations to our very own One-Design Fleet Captain, Emory Nemeth, and his daughter, Caitlin, for winning the Broad Bay Bucket aboard their Tazer.

If you didn’t make it to the Broad Bay Regatta, I at least hope you got a chance to enjoy some of the Harborfest celebrations. Sergio, Misty, Megan and I attended a ceremony celebrating the Riachuelo Battle Day on the following Monday aboard the Brazilian Tall ”. Sergio was actually aboard during the of Sail. What an incredible ship; the second largest of the festival next to the German Tall Ship.

Don’t forget that there will not be a meeting in June due to Cruise Week(s); the details of which follow later in this issue and have been posted on our website: www.broadbaysailing.org . The July meeting will be on the 24th (not the 17th) at (once again) the ODU Sailing Center. Mike Nestor has once more arranged approval for us to shoot off our old flares. Please make plans to attend… this will be a lot of fun! Please bring a snack to share; beverages will be available for a small donation.

I hope that June finds the membership enjoying the water and the cruises. Megan, Michael, and I will be vacationing in Athens, for the last two weeks of the month. We’ll drink some Oyzo for you… Yamas!

Till July, Scott Almond [email protected]
