Women’s Singles Round of 16 Quotes

#2 [2] Carol Zhao (STANFORD) def. #43 Zsofi Susanyi (CALIFORNIA), 6-2, 6-0 Carol Zhao, Stanford On maintaining focus through the match… "I'm taking this tournament match-by-match and really focusing on myself. Zsofi [Susanyi] is a great player and I have a lot of respect for her, so I was happy to be able to execute well today. I'm never too concerned with the score because I'm focused on my game and doing the things I want to do every match. It's nice to be on the winning side, so I hope to continue."

#13 [9-16] Josie Kuhlman (FLORIDA) def. #4 [4] (CALIFORNIA), 6-4, 6-1 Josie Kuhlman, Florida On advancing to the quarterfinals… “[Maegan Manasse] is a great player. I've played her before, and she beat me pretty bad. Coming out today, I was looking to get her back. I thought that I played a really good match. I was staying aggressive and hitting my shots. I was able to pull off the win. At this point in the tour- nament, every match is a new match. You have to come into each day starting over. I've won some great matches, but it means nothing going into the next round. I just have to take care of business there."

#1 [1] (UCLA) def. #24 Sabrina Santamaria (UCLA), 6-1, 6-2 Robin Anderson, UCLA On the match results… “It was a tough match. I think Sabrina [Santamaria] had a bit of a slow start, because she was playing better in the second set. I usually strug- gle a lot with Sabrina, because I like to hit with top-spin and she hits the ball flat and low. I hit the ball up, she hits it down. I just think she was making more errors today than she normally does and I was just making a lot of balls. I also served very well.”

On advancing to the quarterfinals… “I’m looking forward to competing. Competition is why I play. To make it past the round of 16 for the first time in four years, I think that is good.”

#7 [7] (NORTH CAROLINA) def. #12 [9-16] Joana Eidukonyte (CLEMSON), 6-3, 6-1 Jamie Loeb, North Carolina On overcoming two rain delays to win… "I tried to keep up the momentum the best I could. I felt like I was playing a lot better today, and I wanted to use that coming back from the rain delay. I think I did a good job sticking to the game plan and not letting the weather affect me. If I play the way that I did today, hopefully I can keep it up and do more damage. I need to take care of my body and be smart about what I do."

#15 [9-16] (VIRGINIA) def. #47 (UCLA), 6-1, 7-5 Danielle Collins, Virginia On the rain delays… “When it started raining I was down 5-4 in the second set, and I felt like I could use the delay to break her momentum with movement, the inten- sity of my shots, and how well I was playing. I took advantage of the break, maintained my focus, kept fighting and luckily I came back and won.”

On advancing to quarterfinals… “I’m just excited to get to play against the best players in the country. I’m looking forward to having a rematch with Jaime Loeb after losing to her in the fall at the US Open invitational tournament. It’ll be nice to get back out there and have another chance to compete with her.” 2015 NCAA DIVISION I MEN’S & WOMEN’S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS May 21 • Waco, Texas • Baylor University Hurd Tennis Complex

Maybe my fight was a little bit bigger than her and I think that was the difference. I was more confident. For tomorrow, I just need to go out there and have fun, play my game, be confident, and just enjoy the battle.”

#21 Chanelle Van Nguyen (UCLA) def. #22 Ema Burgic (BAYLOR), 6-4, 6-1 Chanelle Van Nguyen, UCLA On the match results… “I thought I came out and played well. In the first set we were very close, it was 6-4, so we were grinding for our points. In the second set I fig- ured out how to play her successfully, and she also gave me some errors too.”

On improvements for tomorrow… “I felt like my serve wasn’t where it needed to be today; I missed a lot of first serves. I’ll fix my toss for my next match, and hopefully it will work out for me.”

#37 Sinead Lohan (MIAMI, [FL.]) def. #32 Natalie Beazant (RICE), 7-5, 6-1 Sinead Lohan, Miami (FL) On game plan for the match… "I knew that [Natalie Beazant] was going to be a very tough opponent and crafty player. I started slow in the match, going 4-0 down. Then I woke up and started playing my game. I started moving better and got into it. The first set was a really tough fight. I knew at the start of the second set that I would need good energy to keep going. I did that and it worked for me."
