Regular : $16,228 Attendance: 1286 Pacing You picked up this Bulletin amid the happy pandemonium of our marathon weekend. This race compels attention and enthusiasm because of the athletic prowess it demands, but it also speaks to something deep in us with the phrase, “long distance run.” A sprint will dazzle us, but long distance goes beneath sparkle to profound self- discipline and commitment. What runs past us on the Avenues this weekend is a crowd of those who know how to conserve and stretch the resource that they are. Pacing challenges the need to show off and shifts focus from the moment to the far off goal. That being said, one never reaches such a goal without embracing the race itself as a time of fulfillment. The distinction between sprinting and running long distance takes on new meaning for me as the Finance Council introduces us to the Renew and Rebuild Campaign in our parish, in tandem with the Archdiocese of New York. Conceptually it comes easier to imagine a capital campaign as a sprint. You have a goal and you try to make it or exceed it. If you succeed you give a shout of triumph and a sigh of relief. Then you move on until the fundraisers tell you that you do it all over again. But I hope that for us this will be more than reaching a goal and accomplishing a project. My aim for this race is that the Finance Council and I can invite you to join us in the care of our two churches as a long distance run. As in the big race outside pacing figures as a make-or-break skill for the whole group. Our whole parish community will need to discern the rate at which we tackle issues of conservation, renovation, and updating, and that means moving with the determination and humility of self-knowledge. Like runners we must pursue constancy of movement in order to acquire the habits of eliciting resources, working with vendors, keeping up with archdiocesan requirements, and sustaining the interest of the community itself. Pacing has measure but not uniformity: it adjusts to terrain. But our race does not cover terra firma; rather it spans topographies of glass and painting, stone and wood. Each surface demands a knowledge. So what does it take to restore the deep luster of woodcarving, to lift soot from walls and paintings, to restore the vertical integrity of stained glass and its luminosity? Learning about such things makes us more aware of our environment, and also takes us across the line that separates patrons and benefactors from owners. Those who walk into a church that is owned by its congregation discern that they are not just in a pretty building, or a venerable landmark; they realize they stand in the House of God and the House of the Church. They do not visit a monument but share a place of prayer and rest provided by generous souls who have made it their own. We will traverse some lengths of our course with greater ease than others. But the runner can befriend even hard terrain as a test of skill and as part of the beauty of the whole course. Stained glass may offer us the most challenging uphill grade, but when it gleams back at us with full force we will forget the expense and logistics of cleaning and restoring it. Perhaps restoring cleanness and integrity to the things of our church will fortify us for restoring the life and practice of the Church herself. It cannot escape comment that this time of scandal does not shed good light on clergy seeking money, but for me it begins to turn around when seen as a communal effort to to care for that which is ours, and by our care make of it a sign of our hope. If we generate a plan for maintaining the fabric of our Parish home, we give a signal that we are in for the long haul. While we face present sadness resolutely, we also look forward in faith and hope to a time beyond these scandals when our buildings may be of real help in a spiritual re-building. Thank you for reading these lines and for giving a gracious hearing to our Finance Councilors over these two weekends. I hope that all of us together may give a good witness to the constancy of Christ, who from the finish line encourages and enables us in the run to join him. I leave you with this prayer. I used it on the holy card for my silver jubilee, and it continues to reflect the faith that sustains me. O God of unchanging power and eternal light, look with favor on the wondrous mystery of the whole Church and serenely accomplish the work of human salvation, which you planned from all eternity. May the whole world know and see that what was cast down is raised up, what had become oldies make new, and all things are restored to integrity through Christ, just as by him they came into being, who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen. Peace!

This Week of Grace

The Holy Father’s Prayer Intention for November 2019 • That a spirit of dialogue, encounter, and reconciliation may emerge in the Near East, where diverse religious communities share their lives together.

From the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops • November is National Black Catholic History Month. • Give thanks for the witness of the Black Catholic Community through centuries of adversity and pray that it may continue to thrive. • Pray that in the spirit of Pentecost the Church may be open always to new peoples and their gifts. • During this National Vocation Awareness Week that each of us may remember that the whole Christian Life, founded in , is a vocation to God’s Service. • Pray that all of the Baptized may be open to God’s call to deepen that service in specific ways: marriage, religious life, priesthood, and the diaconate, and forms of the single life such as consecrated virginity and secular institutes.

November 3 The Thirty-First Sunday of the Year • Today thousands of people will run a marathon in our city. We pray for their safety. May this tremendous effort have a spiritual dimension for each runner, and for those who support them.

November 4 St. Charles Borromeo (Memorial) • St. Charles (1538-1584) served as the Archbishop of Milan who implemented the reforms of the . This makes him a great patron for Church reform and renewal especially as it concerns the life of the clergy.

November 7 All Saints of the Order of Preachers (Feast) • On this day Dominicans remember the Saints who have lived in our midst. The many forms of Dominican holiness appear with luminous beauty in the stained glass windows of our two churches. Such a day comes as a great reminder that the Order is not a movement, but a way of life that is also a microcosm of the whole Church. All kinds of personalities and points of view are assembled by the Holy Spirit into this distinct gathering of souls.

November 8 All Souls of the Order of Preachers • If the Order is a way of life, then it is also a Communion of Souls in which the living recognize that the dead remain their Brothers and Sisters through the bond of prayer. Those who in purgation (Purgatory) cannot pray for themselves and rely on the active intercession of their living neighbors. • Here is a reminder to ponder the bond between the living and the dead in our own families.

November 9 The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica • In 324 ad the Church St. John Lateran was consecrated as the “cathedral” of Rome. We could say that it is the first public church, called therefore, and “Archbasilica.” Indeed, the church is referred to as “Omnium urbis and orbis ecclesiarum mater et caput.” That is, “mother and mistress of all the churches of Rome and of the world.” • This church was erected on the orders of the Emperor Constantine who legalized the practice of Christianity. So we give thanks for the gift of being able to worship publicly. • To honor this church is to honor them all and to give thanks for the generosity, artistic expression, and devotion of the People of God so which church buildings give public expression.
