In September, MIFA set out to recognize the good in our community by creating Something Good in Memphis. Memphians from every corner of our city have responded in a huge way, sharing their stories about the kindness of friends, neighbors, relatives, and strangers. Sometimes it seems easier to focus on the negative, but we want to thank everyone who has reminded us how much good there is in our community! We hope you enjoy a sampling of nominations in this issue of Hope in Action – to see more or to nominate someone you know, visit SomethingGoodinMemphis.org. Gretchen Kirk is an inspiration! Nominated by Barbara Olson. Gretchen joined our faculty at St. Agnes Academy-St. Dominic School in August, 2006, and immediately made an impact on our students and teachers. She and her husband recycle notebook paper and containers from school events, reminding us that nothing is wasted and that we must respect our environment. Gretchen developed a program in which our sophomores work prepare and serve lunch monthly at the St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen in Midtown. She led the upper school class chaplains in a blessing for pets and worked with the chaplains to place a prayer for safe driving on all autos on campus. She is a visible and vocal supporter of Race for the Cure in Memphis and coordinated prayer services for those with cancer. Making a difference on our campus as an administrator, teacher, mother, spouse, and friend, Gretchen is respected for her giving nature, her care for each member of our school community, and for her energy and smile for all. www.mifa.org • 901-527-0208 HOPE IN ACTION • Winter 2009 • 3 Something Good in Memphis nominees from across the city! She first produced this work in acrylic in her series called Under Construction. The mural, which features the same designs from the series, uses geometric shapes to construct portraits of unique faces. She chose this particular piece of art in the hopes that the classical shapes would be familiar and eye-catching to passersby. Ideally, the mural will encourage the public to contemplate topics surrounding “individuality and the multifaceted nature of life.” The artists wanted the piece to be thought-provoking and inspirational. Khara also wants this mural to serve as inspiration for other members of the neighborhood to make their dreams for projects come to life. She and her mother used the website In Our Backyard – or IOBY – to make their dream a reality.

  • A New Chapter Creating Connections Between Words, Hearts, and the Community
SUMMER 2016 A New Chapter Creating connections between words, hearts, and the community Inside: Special Graduation Section – Celebrating the Class of 2016 S t. Mary’s girls love words. From the moment you walk in the doors of the school, girls of all ages are embracing words. They love to use them correctly, to play with them, and to learn new ones. I discovered this logophilia – the love of words, and word games – quickly when I first joined the St. Mary’s community in 2004. Their care for words extended from a note by a candy bowl to exquisitely written college essays. The success of Student Council campaigns seems to depend on the apt turn of phrase on the banners. And where else but at St. Mary’s does the Middle School Halloween costume winner owe her victory to creating the best visual pun? One English teacher stated this affection more boldly, “Our students leave St. Mary’s as the defenders of the English Language.” At the heart of academic success is learning to read. At St. Mary’s, we delight in teaching students of all ages the art of engaged reading. In the stories that follow, you will see how St. Mary’s is continuing its strong tradition in developing learners and creating more opportunities for our girls and for children across Memphis to discover their love of words. The Nathaniel C. Hughes Learning Center is our most recent accomplishment in fostering life-long learning. It is only fitting that Dr. Hughes’ name is honored through this center; an esteemed scholar and former headmaster, he raised St.

FREE www.cooperyoung.org COOPER-YOUNG CONNECTED LampLighter goes online this month B Y P atr i C k M i l l er This month, there are some changes happening in the ways that we communicate with and keep you informed. For years, Cooper-Youngians have kept abreast of what’s going on in their neighborhood in the usual ways; over the fence, conversations at local establishments, nights out, and, of course, the LampLighter newspaper, still hand delivered once per month for free. This paper has been a constant in this community for a long time, keeping folks informed about their neighbor- hood and its relationship to greater Memphis, showcasing music and the arts and artisans, supporting local businesses and restaurants, and all written (and mostly published) by volunteers from Cooper-Young. in February, the LampLighter reaches a big milestone; it’s going online! as is tradition, February will be our first issue in 2010, and our first online issue ever, but more than just an online edition of the printed paper, the “wired” edition will provide constantly changing information and dialogue on a day-to-day basis to a potentially even larger audience than the paper can ever hope to reach. in addition, as a part of bringing the LampLighter online, we’ve added some new fun and useful features to the Cooper-Young website, as well. Read on for more... What is the LampLighter online all about? The entire contents of the printed Lamp- Lighter newspaper will be available online either at or before the distribution of the paper version.

cooperyoung.org FREE www.cooperyoung.org NEIGHBORHOOD NIGHT OUT The party never stops in Cooper- Young B y S a R a H F rierson On the heels of the Cooper-young Festival, block clubs around the neighborhood are gearing up for this year’s Neighborhood Night Out (NNO) on Tuesday, October 12, from 6-8pm (please see page 16 for a list of registered NNO parties). NNO parties are a wonderful opportunity to meet your neigh- bors, share food and fun, and promote the safety of our neighborhood. Neighborhood Night Out is the Cooper- young version of National Night Out, a nationwide program encouraging neighbor- hood spirit, community safety, and police- community partnerships for a safer nation. For the second year in a row Cooper-young has opted to hold the event in October rather than august in order to beat the heat. according to Ginger Spickler, our Block Club Chairman, “august 3 (the national date) was one of the hottest nights on record for Memphis. We think October will be much more pleasant.” Despite the different season, Target, the corporate sponsor of National Night Out, will make their presence known in our neighbor- hood once again. Each party will receive a $25 gift card from Target that one lucky partygoer will take home This year we also welcome a local sponsor for NNO – Outback Steakhouse. Kevin and Lauren Luke, Cy residents and owners/ proprietors of the Outback on Union, have generously supplied us with loads of goodies, including ten Outback gift baskets and multiple coolers that will be awarded to lucky party attendees in a drawing after NNO.
