Surround Sound Auteurs and the Fragmenting of Genre. In J.-O. Gullö (Ed.), Proceedings of the 12th Art of Record Production Conference Mono: Stereo: Multi (pp. 319-328). Stockholm: Royal College of Music (KMH) & Art of Record Production. Alan Williams: Surround Sound Auteurs and the Fragmenting of Genre Abstract Multi-channel sonic experience is derived from a myriad of technological processes, shaped by market forces, configured by creative decision makers and translated through audience taste preferences. From the failed launch of quadrophonic sound in the 1970s, through the currently limited, yet sustained niche market for 5.1 music releases, a select number of mix engineers and producers established paradigms for defining expanded sound stages. Whe- reas stereophonic mix practices in popular music became ever more codified during the 1970s, the relative paucity of multi-channel releases has preserved the individual sonic fingerprint of mixers working in surround sound. More- over, market forces have constricted their work to musical genres that appeal to the audiophile community that supports the format. This study examines the work of Elliot Scheiner, Bob Clearmountain, Giles Martin, and Steven Wilson to not only analyze the sonic signatures of their mixes, but to address how their conceptions of the soundstage become associated with specific genres, and serve to establish micro-genres of their own. I conclude by ar- guing that auteurs such as Steven Wilson have amassed an audience for their mixes, with a catalog that crosses genre boundaries, establishing a mode of listening that in itself represents an emergent genre – surround rock.

  • Mtv and Transatlantic Cold War Music Videos
102 MTV AND TRANSATLANTIC COLD WAR MUSIC VIDEOS WILLIAM M. KNOBLAUCH INTRODUCTION In 1986 Music Television (MTV) premiered “Peace Sells”, the latest video from American metal band Megadeth. In many ways, “Peace Sells” was a standard pro- motional video, full of lip-synching and head-banging. Yet the “Peace Sells” video had political overtones. It featured footage of protestors and police in riot gear; at one point, the camera draws back to reveal a teenager watching “Peace Sells” on MTV. His father enters the room, grabs the remote and exclaims “What is this garbage you’re watching? I want to watch the news.” He changes the channel to footage of U.S. President Ronald Reagan at the 1986 nuclear arms control summit in Reykjavik, Iceland. The son, perturbed, turns to his father, replies “this is the news,” and lips the channel back. Megadeth’s song accelerates, and the video re- turns to riot footage. The song ends by repeatedly asking, “Peace sells, but who’s buying?” It was a prescient question during a 1980s in which Cold War militarism and the nuclear arms race escalated to dangerous new highs.1 In the 1980s, MTV elevated music videos to a new cultural prominence. Of course, most music videos were not political.2 Yet, as “Peace Sells” suggests, dur- ing the 1980s—the decade of Reagan’s “Star Wars” program, the Soviet war in Afghanistan, and a robust nuclear arms race—music videos had the potential to relect political concerns. MTV’s founders, however, were so culturally conserva- tive that many were initially wary of playing African American artists; addition- ally, record labels were hesitant to put their top artists onto this new, risky chan- 1 American President Ronald Reagan had increased peace-time deicit defense spending substantially.

The spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels -- Ezekiel 1:21 "Wheels Within Wheels deepens the musical experience created at Congregation Bet Haverim by lifting the veil between the ordinary and the sacred, so that our earthy expression of musical holiness connects with the celestial resonance of the universal. Like Ezekiel’s mystical vision, the spirals of harmonies, voices and instruments evoke contemplation, awe and celebration. At times Wheels Within Wheels will transport you to an intimate experience with your innermost self, and at other times it will convey a profound connection with the world around you." -- Rabbi Joshua Lesser THE MUSICIANS OF CONGREGATION BET HAVERIM Chorus Soprano: Nefesh Chaya, Sara Dardik, Julie Fishman, Nancy Gerber, Joy Goodman, Ellie McGraw, Theresa Prestwood, Rina Rosenberg, Faith Russler, Sandi Schein Alto: Jesse Harris Bathrick, Elke Davidson, Gayanne Geurin, Kim Goldsmith, Rebecca Green, Carrie Hausman, Alix Laing, Rebecca Leary Safon, AnnaLaura Scheer, Valerie Singer, Linda Weiskoff, Valerie Wolpe, McKenzie Wren Tenor: Ned Bridges, Brad Davidorf, Faye Dresner, Henry Farber, Alan Hymowitz, Lynne Norton Bass: Dan Arnold, Gregg Bedol, David Borthwick, Gary Falcon, Bill Laing, Bill Witherspoon, Howard Winer Band Will Robertson, guitar, keyboards; Natalie Stahl, clarinet, saxophone; Sarah Zaslaw, violin, viola; Reuben Haller, mandolin; Jordan Dayan, bass, electric bass; Mike Zimmerman, drum kit, percussion; Henry Farber and Gayanne Geurin, percussion; with Matthew Kaminski, accordion Strings Sarah Zaslaw and Benjamin Reiss, violin; David Borthwick, viola; Ruth Einstein, cello; Will Robertson, double bass Children’s Choir and CBH Community School Chorus director: Will Robertson Music director: Gayanne Geurin Thank You It takes a shul to raise a recording.
