COMEDY CENTRAL(R) Orders 'John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show' from Avalon Television COMEDY CENTRAL(R) Orders 'John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show' From Avalon Television Six One-Hour Episode Series Will Premiere January 8 At 11 P.M. NEW YORK, Nov 18, 2009 -- COMEDY CENTRAL has ordered "John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show," a six episode stand- up series hosted by John Oliver ("The Daily Show with Jon Stewart") from Avalon Television, it was announced today by Elizabeth Porter, senior vice president, specials and talent, COMEDY CENTRAL. The series was shot in New York City and will premiere January 8 at 11:00 pm. "When John Oliver said he wanted to host a stand-up series featuring his favorite comics, the only real question we had for him was 'How soon can we do it?'" said Porter. "He's a staple on 'The Daily Show' and is such an exceptional stand-up comic. It's awesome to know our audience is going to get more of him this way." "It's the most worthwhile way you could spend an hour each week that doesn't involve getting Mount Rushmore gradually tattooed across your stomach," said Oliver. Executive produced by Oliver and Avalon Television's Richard Allen-Turner, David Martin, James Taylor and Jon Thoday, "John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show" features stand-up from some of John Oliver's favorite comedians. Oliver opens each of the six episodes and introduces four stand-up guests over the hour. Paul F. Tompkins, Janeane Garofalo, Marc Maron, Brian Posehn, Kristen Schaal and Eugene Mirman close each of their episodes with super-sized sets. Other comics appearing on the series include Maria Bamford, Greg Fitzsimmons, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Nick Kroll, Matt Braunger, Hannibal Buress, Pete Holmes, Amy Schumer, Chris Hardwick, Matt McCarthy and Hari Kondabolu. "It's a great pleasure to have the opportunity to produce Avalon's first series for COMEDY CENTRAL with such a brilliant comedian as John Oliver and so many other great stand-ups," said Jon Thoday, executive producer for Avalon Television and joint CEO of the Avalon Group. John Oliver is a correspondent and an Emmy® Award-winning writer on the "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," which he joined in 2006. He recently appeared in three episodes of NBC's "Community" and he also appeared in his first COMEDY CENTRAL stand-up special, "John Oliver: Terrifying Times" in April 2008. Along with Andy Zaltzman, Oliver also writes and stars in a weekly podcast, "The Bugle: Audio Newspaper for a Visual World." Oliver has been nominated for both Emmy® and Writers Guild Awards and won the Breakout Award for his stand-up comedy performances at the Aspen Comedy Festival in 2007. February 26, 2021 Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer, Alabama are voting to form a union with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). We are the writers of feature films and television series. All of our work is done under union contracts whether it appears on Amazon Prime, a different streaming service, or a television network. Unions protect workers with essential rights and benefits. Most importantly, a union gives employees a seat at the table to negotiate fair pay, scheduling and more workplace policies. Deadline Amazon accepts unions for entertainment workers, and we believe warehouse workers deserve the same respect in the workplace. We strongly urge all Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer to VOTE UNION YES. IRONIC FEMINISM: RHETORICAL CRITIQUE IN SATIRICAL NEWS A Dissertation Presented to the Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Rhetorics, Communication, and Information Design by Kathy Elrick December 2016 Accepted by Dr. David Blakesley, Committee Chair Dr. Jeff Love Dr. Brandon Turner Dr. Victor J. Vitanza ABSTRACT Ironic Feminism: Rhetorical Critique in Satirical News aims to offer another perspective and style toward feminist theories of public discourse through satire. This study develops a model of ironist feminism to approach limitations of hegemonic language for women and minorities in U.S. public discourse. The model is built upon irony as a mode of perspective, and as a function in language, to ferret out and address political norms in dominant language. In comedy and satire, irony subverts dominant language for a laugh; concepts of irony and its relation to comedy situate the study’s focus on rhetorical contributions in joke telling. How are jokes crafted? Who crafts them? What is the motivation behind crafting them? To expand upon these questions, the study analyzes examples of a select group of popular U.S.

  • Roots Report: an Interview with Weird Al
Roots Report: An Interview with Weird Al Okee dokee folks… Almost exactly one year ago I saw Weird Al Yankovic at the Zeiterion in New Bedford. In all honesty it was one of the BEST shows I have EVER seen. It was fun, funny, energetic … basically AWESOME! I had a grin on my face the whole time. Weird Al is a comical/musical genius. I know a lot of you will scoff at this and probably think what he does is easy. It’s not, but he makes it seem that way as he effortlessly genre-shifts and works lyrical magic with the lampoons. Weird Al is bringing his Mandatory Fun Show to the Providence Performing Arts Center on September 14, and I had the opportunity to talk to him about his tour, music and upcoming show. Before I did the interview I asked folks on Facebook what they would like to know about Al, and I based my all of questions on those responses. John Fuzek: What was your favorite video to film? Weird Al: Probably “Tacky” (a parody of “Happy” by Pharrell Williams). It was also one of the easier videos to film because it was all done in one shot. Once we had the DP and the crew rehearsed, my celebrity friends came in. We told them where their marks were, everybody was professional and we knocked it out in a couple of hours. It was great. I got to work with some of the funniest people I know: Jack Black, Aisha Tyler, Kristen Schaal, Margaret Cho and Eric Stonestreet … you know, they’re in my address book.

First, a huge thank you to the more than two hundred and twenty five people from the radio and political worlds who graciously took time from their busy schedules to answer my questions. Some of them put up with repeated follow ups and nagging emails as I tried to develop an understanding of the business and its political implications. They allowed me to keep most things on the record, and provided me with an understanding that simply would not have been possible without their participation. When I began this project, I never imagined that I would interview anywhere near this many people, but now, almost five years later, I cannot imagine the project without the information gleaned from these invaluable interviews. I have been fortunate enough to receive fellowships from the Fox Leadership Program at the University of Pennsylvania and the Corcoran Department of History at the University of Virginia, which made it far easier to complete this dissertation. I am grateful to be a part of the Fox family, both because of the great work that the program does, but also because of the terrific people who work at Fox.
