In fact, the two styles have many parallels. Both were created by African- Americans in the southern United States in the latter part of the 19th century and spread from there in the early decades of the 20th century; both contain the sad sounding “blue note,” which is the bending of a particular note a quar- ter or half tone; and both feature syncopation and improvisation. Blues and jazz have had huge influences on American popular music. In fact, many key elements we hear in pop, soul, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll (opposite) Dinah Washington have their beginnings in blues music. His father, Walter, worked as a machinist and his mother, Beatrice, looked after the couple’s eight children. After learning the guitar from his brother at age ten, Young began playing the upright bass professionally at thirteen. He played at the After Hours Club on Sunday nights from 2:30 a.m. until dawn and then ate breakfast at home before heading to school. Young achieved great heights as a musician and could be heard on bass, cello and vocals with his own group, the Eldee Young Jazz be heard on bass, cello and vocals with his own group, the Eldee Young Jazz Quartet before his passing. -

After winning a talent contest at the age of 15, she began performing in clubs. 1941-42 Performing in such Chicago clubs as Dave's Rhumboogie and the Downbeat Room of the Sherman Hotel (with Fats Waller). She was playing at the Three Deuces, a jazz club, when a friend took her to hear Billie Holiday at the Garrick Stage Bar. Joe Sherman[who?] 1944 - Recording debut for the Keynote label that December with "Evil Gal Blues", written by Leonard Feather and backed by Hampton and musicians from his band, including Joe Morris (trumpet) and Milt Buckner (piano).[1][6][7] Both that record and its follow-up, "Salty Papa Blues", made Billboard's "Harlem Hit Parade". 1946 - Signed with Mercury Records as a solo singer. Her first solo recording for Mercury, a version of Fats Waller's "Ain't Misbehavin'", was another hit, starting a long string of success. 1948 – 1955 27 R&B top ten hits, making her one of the most popular and successful singers of the period. -

Over a 70-year span, 10 The Jackson Southernaires have shared the stage with more than 15 11 members. THE PITIFULS Hold My Heart To The Fire LocoBop L2I-012 Malaco Records’ house band in Jackson, MS was one of the best tight knit rhythm sections that southern studios were noted for in the 1960s and ‘70s. James Stroud (drums), Carson Whitsett (keyboards), Dino Zimmerman (guitar), and Don Barrett (bass) shaped hits by ZZ Hill, Dorothy Moore, Paul Simon, Paul Davis, Little Milton, Bobby Blue Bland, Johnnie Taylor, and Eddie Floyd. In the early 1980s, Stroud seized an opportunity to work with some of Nashville’s biggest names. Barrett, Zimmerman, and Whitsett, coincidently but individually, made Nashville their home as well. No longer a unit, they independently recorded with KT Oslin, Eddie Rabbitt, Janis Ian, Kathy Mattea, BB King, Eric Clapton, Suzy Bogguss, John Mayall, and Waylon Jennings. Whitsett also collaborated with Dan Penn, Tony Joe White, and others writing hits for Solomon Burke, Lorrie Morgan, John Anderson, Joe Cocker, and Conway Twitty. THE NEXT FOOL I FORGOT TO BE YOUR LOVER In 1996, Whitsett, Zimmerman, and Barrett reunited for a CLEAN SLATE one-off project with drummer Jimmy Hyde of Eddie SMOKE FILLED ROOM Rabbitt’s band and keyboardist Gene Sisk (Sawyer Brown, LOVE AT WORK The Judds, Earl Scruggs). Dubbing themselves The THE PITIFULS Pitifuls, they recorded this album in Memphis with Grammy- HOLD MY HEART TO THE FIRE award-winning engineer Danny Jones. THEY SAY BACKSLIDIN' Don Barrett sings lead on the majority of tracks, alternating I'M GONNA LOVE YOU OUT OF HIS LIFE with the grittier Jimmy Hyde. Except for Barrett's I'm Gonna Love You Right Out Of His Life and the Soul classic I Forgot To Be Your Lover, all songs were penned by Carson Whitsett, some in tandem with Dan Penn, Larry Byrom, Gary Nicholson, and others. -

JAZZ APPRECIATION MONTH Jazz Appreciation Month (fondly known as "JAM") was created at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in 2001 to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz for the entire month of April. JAM is intended to stimulate and encourage people of all ages to participate in jazz - to study the music, attend concerts, listen to jazz on radio and recordings, read books about jazz, and more. This year, JAM celebrates the dynamic impact of the often-overlooked contributions that women have made to jazz, both on and off the stage. As performers and conductors, educators, and producers and directors of jazz festivals, women have made their mark but have continued to struggle for recognition on par with their male counterparts. Smithsonian Jazz is highlighting a multitude of women artists on student-made posters from the Duke Ellington High School for the Arts. Features include Mary Lou Williams, the Sweethearts of Rhythm, Leigh Pilzer, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and many others. Nicknamed "Lady Day" by her friend and music partner Lester Young, Holiday had a seminal influence on jazz music and pop singing.
