Programme Title English Proficiency Programme for Academics

Programme Description This programme is intended for learners who want to gain confidence in using academic English in an overseas environment. It is directed at individuals who have already acquired a basic knowledge of English and the emphasis is on listening and speaking skills using academic English.

Addionally, this programme provides English learners with the opportunity to sharpen the fih skill in language learning (i.e.: culture), coupled with effecve communicaon skills.

This programme is learner-centred and requires personal commitment both in the classroom and when in learning acvies outside the classroom; learners are encouraged to interact and socialise using English by pung it into pracce, and parcipang in programmes organised to complement the learning experience.

Learning Objectives By the end of the programme, learners should be able to: * improve the basic four skills of learning English, with an addional fih skill in cross-cultural communicaon * apply grammacal understanding in order to evaluate spoken English and wrien texts * develop and improve their English listening and speaking skills in the academic sense * develop and improve work-related communicaon skills in the academic sense

Learning Outcomes Upon successful compleon of the programme, learners will: * have an ability to interact and communicate confidently in English in any given situaon * have a higher level of competence in speaking and listening, including grammar and vocabulary within any given context * improved presentaon and public speaking skills * a heightened sense of appreciaon for diversity and cross-cultural living

Level Beginner to Intermediate Mode of Delivery Face-to-face acve learning class me, classroom discussion/parcipaon, hands-on outdoor training acvies and peer learning pracces.

Duration Eight weeks

Learning Hours For 8 weeks, learners will aend four hours of English classes each day, consisng of two hours of class in the morning, and two hours in the aernoon. There shall be three weekend trips organised.

Margaret Soo started her teaching career in 1985 at KDU where she taught Intensive English to Malaysian students preparing for university degree studies. From 1985 to 1988 she joined a residenal preparatory college (KPP) at ITM in Shah Alam where she taught Intensive English at the South Australian Matriculaon programme, and being the Core Person for TOEFL exam preparaon for a cohort of 400 JPA and MARA scholars from across Malaysia. In 1988 Margaret was awarded an internaonal scholarship to pursue her M.Ed in the USA. She joined the Malaysian Instute of Management in 1990 aer she qualified with a master degree in educaonal administraon. She worked across funcons at the naonal management instute for 20 years unl she reached the contractual rerement age in 2010, from creang and managing MBA programmes with foreign partner universies (Bath, Hull, Maastricht, RMIT), craing management training proposals for companies, organising management training seminars and conferences to eventually opening and managing MIM branch and representave offices in Johor Bahru and . In 2002 aer being made naonal membership senior manager for two years she went on a two-year sabbacal on another internaonal scholarship to pursue public administraon at an internaonal university/diplomac school in Tokyo, Japan. She returned in 2004 and was made regional head of operaons for the Asian Management Associaon of Management Organisaons (AAMO) whose membership includes ten apex management organisaons in Asia: Singapore (SIM), Australia (AIM), New Zealand (NZIM), Hong Kong (HKMA), Japan (IMAJ), India (AIMA) etc and who each offers management development research, educaon and training programmes in their own country. A PSMB cerfied professional trainer (management so skills and communicaon), Margaret’s last few years’ posng at MIM was Chief Operang Officer/Acng CEO. She rered from MIM at age 50 in 2010 and joined UCSI Group in the following porolios:

March 2010 – March 2012 COO, UCSI University Trust – streamlined scholarship granng processes and incorporated the university Trust and registered the Alumni by 2011.

May 2010 – March 2012 Vice President, Group Corporate Affairs – organised UCSI University’s Silver Jubilee Celebraon through a series of major events and branding exercises which included the various ETP projects with PEMANDU.

April 2012 – July 2013 Head of Academy/Lecturer, School of Educaon – helped set up the Brish Council/IELTS partnership and EEP teaching funcons at UCSI University’s east coast campus in , taught first year university courses and wrote SOP for the conduct of the EEP at the branch campus.

July – December 2013 Programme Director, CELT – managed and taught Phase I of the Intensive English Proficiency and Teaching Programme for more than 100 English teachers from Vietnam.

Well qualified in the field of English language teaching and with great passion to share, Dr Chandran has since 1994 taught part-me in more than twenty instuons of higher learning in Malaysia, these include the University Malaya, Internaonal Medical University, UCSI University, to name a few. An examinaon moderator, a post-graduate program assessor and a much sought aer master trainer, Dr Chandran conducts not just business English training for large companies and government agencies such as the Ministry of Educaon, he was also been appointed Facilitator - “The Master Teacher Trainers of Afghanistan”, a Malaysia-Australia Educaon Program for Afghanistan.

Rajasingham has been teaching English and study skills part-me at UCSI University since 2000. Classes and workshops he conducted include Teach English, University Life, Wring for Specific Purpose, Business Communicaon and Understanding Reading & Wring. Aside from teaching regular, faculty based courses, he has also conducted several workshops on Academic Wring organised by Centre For Learning. Besides rendering his service to UCSI University, Rajasingham also teaches English to foreign post-graduate and under-graduate students at the University Malaysia and conducted English classes for doctors at HUKM, execuve managers from FELDA, A&W, and FINAS.

Trained in the English language and law, Rajasingham has taught in various Malaysian secondary schools approved by the Ministry of educaon and was involved with the publicaon business in both markeng and editorial works.

Rajasingham, or fondly called Rajan is mul-lingual and speaks English, Bahasa Malaysia, Tamil, German and French. VIKI GANESAN

Viki Ganesan has over 6 years of experience in training and development of staff from teaching, service, administraon, supervisory and managerial posions; excluding 8 years of experience in teaching profession. Being an energec and a movang trainer, she has experience in managing all levels of people ranging from front desk employees to top management. She has acquired immense knowledge and skill in the TESOL and Business Communicaon field. This comprises of developing and implemenng English courses and corporate communicaon as well as delivering teacher training programmes. In her 6 years of experience in the training area she has delivered training programmes to mulnaonal company staff from Malaysia, Australia, Middle East, Singapore and Malaysia.

Viki’s personal areas of experse are wide ranging and creave – encompassing TESOL Training, Teacher Training, Corporate Communicaon skills, Business Pracces, Business English, Business Wring, and Public Speaking. She has obtained cerficaon from Malaysian Instute of Chartered Secretaries & Administrators and teaching cerficaons from ELSI Sdn Bhd. She is currently taking up MA in TESOL at the reputable University of Nongham, and she is the TESOL trainer at UCSI Professional Academy (UPA).

Viki has an extensive working experience in developing teaching and training materials for TESOL and ESL teachers, developing intensive programs for IELTS and TOEFL students and teaching corporate and non- corporate students from both local and internaonal environment. She is also well-known for her creave wring techniques and her unique teaching style that is appropriate to age and ability of students. Viki has also provided several in-service training for teachers, developed lesson plans, devised teachers’ monthly class schedules, coordinated teachers and classes, and supervised the enre team of teachers- conducng class observaons and providing support to teachers. She has assisted the academic director, and acted as the departmental mentor for exisng and new instructors. She also has experience in managing business, dealing in auding & accounng industries, teaching and training, having previously been aached with an auding company, a mulnaonal news provider, language schools and training companies. Vickey Chen taught part-me at various public schools in Australia and was a teaching assistant at her university during her long stay in New South Wales. Aer returning to Malaysia, she has been involved with teaching Intensive English Proficiency programmes to young working adults from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In addion to that, she has conducted IELTS test preparatory classes, as well as English enrichment classes to local and internaonal young adults from China, Yemen, and Qatar. Her other teaching modules include Foundaon Year and University courses, namely, Theories of Learning and Wring for Academic Purposes, among others. Just recently, she has been involved with the Intensive English Proficiency and Teaching Programme for Educators (Vietnam), both in planning and training. An outdoor person, Vickey enjoys travelling, jogging, cycling, camping, trekking, windsurfing, sailing, and snorkeling, with a wish to take up SCUBA diving one day. Also an environmentalist, she is involved with turtle conservaon acvies. Vickey is IELTS cerfied and holds a Diploma in TESOL from the London Teachers Training College (LTTC), U.K., a Bachelor of Science (Hons.) degree majoring in Microbiology and a Master of Professional Accounng from the University of New South Wales, Australia. B.Sc. in Business Administraon (U.S.A.) Brish Council cerfied IELTS trainer

Geoffrey Rickert started out his teaching career in Fujian, China. Immediately aer graduang from Rider University in the United States, he took flight for Asia – and has remained here ever since. He taught at an English summer camp hosted by Fuzhou No. 1 Middle School. Shortly aer, he made his way to Fujian XinMin School for Overseas Preparatory Studies. Thus, in autumn 2006 he began to lead thousands of students, with ages ranging from about fieen to forty-five, through IELTS speaking preparaon. By the end of 2009, Geoffrey joined UCSI English Academy in Fuzhou, China as the centre’s senior teacher. He connued to provide speaking lessons to students who had plans to study abroad. The following year, he was appointed Head of Academics. It was at the Academy where he delivered specialised technical English lessons for students entering Master Degree programmes in Singapore, Italy, and the United States. In addion, he provided corporate training programs to management-level employees of TPV Technology Limited, the world’s largest manufacturer of computer monitors. The end of 2011 marked his transfer to Malaysia where he filled the role of Senior English Instructor and acng Coordinator. Geoffrey conducted English Holiday Program training for Thai students as they worked toward their Master’s Degrees. Geoffrey has since led the foundaon of UCSI Internaonal School at Springhill, Port Dickson as the school’s Registrar. Now compeng as one of the top internaonal schools in Malaysia, its academic programmes are at internaonal standards.

Adam Yarbrough is not only a teacher, but also a facilitator who focuses on student-centred teaching methods such as CLT, TBLT and discovery-based learning. He realised his passion for teaching as a student teacher of Biology. He connued this by volunteering as teacher at a local community centre. As a lecturer at Nanjing College of Informaon Technology, he taught the four skills of language learning to a wide range of English levels which included praccal strategies and acvies to help students approach test taking with confidence and exploing integrated technologies to opmise learning outcomes.

Adam’s research interests are CALL (computer-assisted language learning) and MALL (mobile- assisted language learning).

Clayton Cooper has a bachelor’s degree in Speech Communicaon with a minor in Educaon, and has been teaching for 7 ½ years in many different contexts. He has taught in the country of Turkey, in the U.S.A. and spent two years teaching at an Internaonal School in Kuala Lumpur. He has also taught English to refugees in Turkey and Malaysia in his spare me with his wife.

Mohamed Haiqal Hariri is very passionate about teaching especially to the ones in need. He holds a Bachelor of English (Hons) degree in TESOL from UNITAR (University Tun Abdul Razak).

Aer obtaining his degree, he has taught in both language centres and colleges in various programs from local universies such as UPM (University Putra Malaysia), UTM (University Teknologi Malaysia) and UITM (University Teknologi Mara Malaysia).

When not teaching, Haiqal is acve in sports such as badminton, table tennis and basketball. Other than that, he is also interested in other languages such as Japanese and Chinese language.
