  • The Hotel Riviera by Elizabeth Adler the House in Amalfi by Elizabeth
Romance and Suspense Romance: The Hotel Riviera by Elizabeth Adler I am traveling abroad with Elizabeth Adler this summer. Great light read for the summer. The House in Amalfi by Elizabeth Adler Pleasure to read. Good author, great descriptions. You experience the location, even the food. Invitation to Provence by Elizabeth Adler I always enjoy Ms. Adler’s books. They are romantic, light reading with a little mystery. Heart of a Husband by Kathryn Alexander This is a love inspired book not a Harlequin Romance. No sex. Just a good romance. I enjoyed reading it. My Sunshine by Catherine Anderson Loved the book. I will read other books by this author. I Took My Love to the Country by Margaret Culkin Banning O.K. I would not recommend it. Every Move She Makes by Beverly Barton I did not enjoy this book. For me, it started off bad and kept going. I probably wouldn’t read any other books by this author. Just Rewards by Barbara Taylor Bradford This is the story of Linnet O’Neil. The family has owned a store or rather a series of stores called Hartes. It is also a family saga going back to her Great-Grandmother. Very interesting story. Flashpoint by Susanne Brookmann Fast paced action from page 1. Interestingly developed characters. Plots and subplots catching – great read, can’t put it down. The Fifth Daughter by Elaine Coffman I can see and feel how the fifth daughter feels because I was a middle child and dealt with some of the same things even though I was not a fifth daughter.

  • There Are Six Bodies in This Relationship: an Anthropological Approach to the Romance Genre
There Are Six Bodies in This Relationship: An Anthropological Approach to the Romance Genre Laura Vivanco and Kyra Kramer Published online: 4 August 2010 http://www.jprstudies.org Abstract: Following Nancy Scheper‐Hughes and Margaret M. Lock, we suggest that each romance protagonist has three bodies: a physical body, a social body, and a political body. In applying this insight to the romance genre we focus on the socio‐sexual aspects of the social body and the socio‐political aspects of the political body, and draw on existing analyses of romance novels in order to explore some of the continuities and variations in the representations of the bodies of romance protagonists and the interactions between those bodies. The primary texts cited span a period of over 200 years and include classics such as Samuel Richardson’s Pamela (1740) and Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (1813) as well as a range of more recent category and single‐title romances. In what we term the “alchemical” model of romantic relationships, the heroine’s socio‐ sexual body (her Glittery HooHa) attracts, and ensures the monogamy of, the hero’s socio‐ sexual body (his Mighty Wang), allowing the heroine’s socio‐political body (her Prism) to focus, and benefit from, the attributes of the hero’s socio‐political body (his Phallus). This is not the only model of romantic relationships present in the genre and therefore a few of the alternative models are briefly examined. We conclude that the bodies of romance heroes and heroines are sites of reinforcement of, and resistance to, enculturated sexualities and gender ideologies.

  • Taltp-Spring-2008-American-Romance
Teaching American Literature: A Journal of Theory and Practice Special Issue Spring/Summer 2008 Volume 2 Issue 2/3 Suzanne Brockmann (Anne Brock) (5 June 1960- Suzanne Brockmann, New York Times best-selling and RITA-award-winning author, pioneered and popularized military romances. Her well-researched, tightly-plotted, highly emotional, action-packed novels with their socially- and politically-pertinent messages have firmly entrenched the romance genre in the previously male-dominated world of the military thriller and expanded the reach and relevance of the romance genre far beyond its stereotypical boundaries. The Navy SEAL heroes of her Tall, Dark and Dangerous series published under the Silhouette Intimate Moments imprint and the heroes and even occasionally the heroines of her best-selling, mainstream Troubleshooter series who work for various military and counter-terrorism agencies have set the standards for military characters in the romance genre. In these two series, Brockmann combines romance, action, adventure, and mystery with frank, realistic examinations of contemporary issues such as terrorism, sexism, racial profiling, interracial relationships, divorce, rape, and homosexuality. Brockmann’s strong, emotional, and realistic heroes, her prolonged story arcs in which the heroes and heroines of future books are not only introduced but start their relationships with each other books before their own, and her innovative interactions with her readers, have made her a reader favorite. Suzanne was born in Englewood, New Jersey on 6 May, 1960 to Frederick J. Brockmann, a teacher and public education administrator, and Elise-Marie “Lee” Schriever Brockmann, an English teacher. Suzanne and her family, including one older sister, Carolee, born 28 January, 1958, lived in Pearl River, N.Y., Guilford, Conn., and Farmingdale, N.Y., following Fred Brockmann’s career as a Superintendent of Schools.

  • (Color) Blind: Historical Romance Fiction and Interracial Relationships in the Twenty-First Century
LOVE IS (COLOR) BLIND: HISTORICAL ROMANCE FICTION AND INTERRACIAL RELATIONSHIPS IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY Mallory Jagodzinski A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 2015 Committee: Jolie Sheffer, Advisor Kara Joyner Graduate Faculty Representative Pamela Regis Sridevi Menon Lisa Hanasono © 2015 Mallory Jagodzinski All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jolie Sheffer, Advisor This dissertation analyzes three historical romance novels—Secrets of a Scandalous Heiress by Theresa Romain (2015), The Duke of Shadows by Meredith Duran (2008) and The Heiress Effect by Courtney Milan (2013)—to understand how postracial rhetoric is being contested and confirmed in a genre where the reader is promised an “emotionally just” ending. In historical romance novels, this “emotionally just” ending often involves a re-writing of history where institutional systems (often patriarchy) are made progressive and more hospitable to oppressed groups through the power of romantic love (RWA “About the Romance Genre”). I argue that depictions of interracial relationships in twenty-first century historical romance novels written by American authors for a primarily American audience helps to illustrate both the problem of postracial thinking and the complexities and contradictions of postracial thinking by rewriting both history and historical stereotypes. The inclusion of interracial relationships that seriously analyze issues of racial identity within the course of the narrative helps to trouble the dominance of the postracial narrative for readers of romance, 83% of whom are white according to a survey conducted by The Nielsen Company for the Romance Writers of America (“The Romance Book Buyer” 11).

  • Romancing the Mid-Life Reader and Heroine a Basic Renovation
A First Kiss Is Still A First Kiss: Romancing the Mid-life Reader and Heroine A Basic Renovation Sandra Barletta December 2008 Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Master of Creative Writing (romance) Faculty of Creative Industries Queensland University of Technology, Kelvin Gove i Statement of Authorship The work contained in this thesis has not been previously submitted to meet requirements for an award at this or any other higher education institution. To the best of my knowledge and belief, the thesis contains no material previously published or written by another person except where due reference is made. Signature: Date: ii Abstract Through its depiction of heroines, romance fiction has the capacity to reflect the attitudes and concerns women face in society. However, the depiction of heroines in romance novels is bound by the constraints publishers place upon them. A vibrant, passionate mid-life heroine gets pushed into a subgenre where romance no longer exists as an option, while a mid-life reader in search of a romance heroine to identify with is relegated to novels where romance is a marginal issue, rather than the main impetus that leads the story. This study, and the novel A Basic Renovation, addresses a neglected demographic of reader and heroine who are marginalised within the romance genre. As well, it gives reasons why heroines need not be characterised in particular roles or situations as they age, and a rationale for why their underrepresentation as romance heroines should end. iii Keywords Ageing, fiction, publishing, romance, romance novels, romance writing, women & ageing, women & fiction iv Acknowledgements To my love, my husband, and my friend Dr John Barletta who doesn’t mind crinkled clothes.
