로버트 플로리의 “B급” 영화에 나타난 실험적 미학 Experimental Aesthetics of “B” Film in Robert Florey’S Works
https://doi.org/10.5392/JKCA.2018.18.08.671 로버트 플로리의 “B급” 영화에 나타난 실험적 미학 Experimental Aesthetics of “B” Film in Robert Florey’s Works 김재홍 서원대학교 공연영상학과 Jae-Hong Kim([email protected]) 요약 B급영화는 A급영화에 대비되는 용어로 경제공황기에 탄생하였다. 로버트 플로리는 실험영화의 성공으로 헐리우드에서 <Murders in the Rue Morgue>와 <The Florentine Dagger>를 감독하게 된다. <Murders in the Rue Morgue>는 호러영화 장르를 통해, <The Florentine Dagger>는 스릴러영화 장르를 통해 아방가르드의 독특한 스타일 과 주제를 보여 주고 있다. ■ 중심어 :∣로버트 플로리∣B급 영화∣아방가르드∣실험적 미학∣ Abstract The term “B film” is contrasted to the term “A film” and it has started life since the Great Depression. Film industry had planned the double bills for the audience attraction; double bills means the release of A film and B film. While A’s is made to make profits, B’s film is made to meet the balance. B film has two features of low budget and low technology. Nevertheless B film has its own style and aesthetics and ironically has made the film more creative and innovative. Historically, it has been related to European and American avant-garde. Robert Florey who is worthy of notice among the early B film makers has adapted and integrated the expressionist and avant-garde styles into the American feature. -

Poverty Row Films of the 1930S by Robert J Read Department of Art History and Communication Studies
A Squalid-Looking Place: Poverty Row Films of the 1930s by Robert J Read Department of Art History and Communication Studies McGill University, Montreal August 2010 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy All rights reserved. This work may not be reproduced in whole or in part, by photocopy or by other means, without permission of the author. Robert J Read, 2010. ii Abstract Film scholarship has generally assumed that the low-budget independent film studios, commonly known as Poverty Row, originated in the early sound-era to take advantage of the growing popularity of double feature exhibition programs. However, the emergence of the independent Poverty Row studios of the 1930s was actually the result of a complex interplay between the emerging Hollywood studios and independent film production during the late 1910s and 1920s. As the Hollywood studios expanded their production, as well as their distribution networks and exhibition circuits, the independent producers that remained outside of the studio system became increasingly marginalized and cut-off from the most profitable aspects of film exhibition. By the late 1920s, non-Hollywood independent film production became reduced to the making of low-budget action films (westerns, adventure films and serials) for the small profit, suburban neighbourhood and small town markets. With the economic hardships of the Depression, the dominant Hollywood studios were forced to cut-back on their lower budgeted films, thus inadvertently allowing the independent production companies now referred to in the trade press as Poverty Row to expand their film practice. -

Promotion of Classic Hollywood Film Costume In
PROMOTION OF CLASSIC HOLLYWOOD FILM COSTUME IN 1930S AMERICAN FASHION MAGAZINES by LINDSAY DANIELLE REAVES VIRGINIA S. WIMBERLEY, COMMITTEE CHAIR AMANDA J. THOMPSON XIAO TONG WILLIAM F. BOMAR SHIRLEY P. FOSTER A THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in the Department of General Human Environmental Sciences in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2013 Copyright Lindsay Danielle Reaves 2013 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT The world of twenty-first-century fashion evolves into new forms at a more rapid pace when compared with clothing developments of the past. Elements of previous fashion trends are constantly recycled into new clothing to appease the public’s cravings. But, to whom does the public look for fashion inspiration? According to the “trickle-down” theory proposed by Simmel (1904) and Sproles (1985), the lower classes turn to the upper classes to find out what styles are in vogue at the moment. Although emulation of upper-class fashions appears to have been happening for some time, it seems fashion inspiration was “kicked into high gear” with the glamorous effects and global outreach of American Hollywood cinema, beginning in the 1930s. When the American film industry boomed in the first half of the twentieth century, actors became the inspiration for fashion as well. The glamour exuding from the Hollywood films produced during the 1930s inspired and influenced the clothing choices of the American public. Well-known costume designers such as Gilbert Adrian, Edith Head, Travis Banton, Howard Greer, Walter Plunkett, and Orry-Kelly designed costumes and personal clothing for many Hollywood leading ladies. -
