GUIDED WALKS AND EVENTS SUMMER 2011 FEATURES

Welcome to the Brecon Beacons Park Society Guided Walks and Events Programme for Summer 2011. Once again our volunteer walk leaders have come up trumps with a varied mix of 43 walks within and on the fringes of the National Park. Farther afield we have a repeat of the popular Glamorgan Heritage Coast walk; a walk from Wotton-under-Edge in the Cotswolds AONB; two very different days out in the Elenydd Mountains, a moderate walk visiting flower meadows in the east, and a strenuous walk from Llyn Brianne in the west; and a visit to another , not quite as high as the one we know. We welcome two new leaders, Cline and Jason, both leading more strenuous walks. At the other end of the spectrum we have two moderately paced special interest walks which we hope will appeal to members who are not regular walkers, the first to Kenfig National Nature Reserve with botanist Bruce McDonald, and the second to look at the innovative “Woollenline” restoration project on the eroded peat of Pen Trumau. Rob Knowles will be leading two treks on the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path, Jim Kear will be leading a series of four day walks on the Monnow Valley Walk, and Wendy and Malcolm Winney have arranged a walking weekend away in Pembrokeshire (this event is now fully booked). Tim Hoverd of Herefordshire Archaeology will give an illustrated talk at the Bear about the dig in the Olchon Valley and the Early Bronze Age Cairn that was found there. Ian Smith continues his Get Lost navigation courses. The 19 th Annual General Meeting of the Society takes place in Talgarth on Saturday 11 th June and will be followed by a talk, lunch, a choice of two walks, finishing with afternoon tea. We hope you enjoy the programme.

If you would like to have a go at leading a walk, have an idea for a talk or event, or any comments or suggestions for improvement of the programme, please contact Anne (walks) tel: 029 2061 0397 or email [email protected] Gerry (events) tel: 01989 565679 or email [email protected]

CAR SHARING. Do you know someone else who lives near you with whom you could car share to Society walks and events? Why not exchange contact details and arrange to share the driving and petrol costs? At the same time you will be helping to save the environment and relieving pressure on car parking spaces at the start of walks. A “contacts” database has been established with details of Society members willing to be contacted by other members, in order to share transport all or part of the way to a walk or other Society event. Participating members receive a hard-copy of the list; we cannot provide it by e-mail, in view of the restrictions of data protection legislation. To find out more or to be added to the database, please contact the Membership Secretary Ben Sladen, email: [email protected] , postal address on back page.

NON-SOCIETY EVENT. The Fforest Fawr Geopark Festival is taking place between Saturday 21 st May and Sunday 5 th June. Details of walks, talks and other events during the festival can be found at www.fforestfawrgeopark.org.uk/geo-fest-2011 .
