MILES BATTY OF BYU, CHANELLE PRICE OF TENNESSEE TOP CAPITAL ONE ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA® DIVISION I /CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS TOWSON, Md. – Seniors Batty of Brigham Young University and Chanelle Price of the headline the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Men’s and Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Batty is a repeat selection as the Academic All-America® of the Year on the men’s side while Price was named as the Academic All-America® of the Year for the women. A neuroscience and exercise science double major with a 3.93 G.P.A., Batty is the first scholar- athlete to be named as the Division I Academic All-America® of the Year in men’s track and field/cross country. Fritz Nugent of Redlands accomplished the feat in 2007 and 2008. Batty is also one of six repeat selections on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Men’s and Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country first team. A native of Sandy, Utah, Batty is a two-time NCAA national champion and a six-time U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-American. Last fall in cross country, Batty was named to the All-West Coast Conference team and was the WCC individual champion. He was also named Mountain Region Athlete of the Year after winning the Mountain Region championship and turned in a 14th-place finish at the 2011 NCAA championship en route to All-America honors. During the indoor season, Batty broke the NCAA indoor record by almost half a second at the and was named as the Mountain Region Track Athlete of the Year. He earned All- America honors at the NCAA Indoor championships by finishing third in both the mile and the . During the spring, Batty placed second and earned All-America honors in the 1,500 meters at the NCAA Outdoor championship. He was recently awarded the NCAA Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship, the most prestigious academic award given by the NCAA. Price, a middle distance runner at Tennessee, majors in journalism and electronic media with a minor in business administration and a 3.93 G.P.A. The recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, she was an eight-time NCAA All-American during her college career. A native of Easton, Pa., she ran on a pair of national champion distance medley relay teams. A five-time Southeastern Conference champion, Price owns a pair of world records, three American and collegiate marks, and four UT marks. She is a six-time NCAA scorer and placed in SEC competition in 14 meets. Price was a six-time champion at the prestigious and she was selected as the 2011 SEC Track & Field Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year. Country first team. Seniors Will Barry of Texas A&M, Matt Carey of Rice and Nate Polacek of Nebraska were second team honorees who earned first team notice this year. Seniors Marvin Reitze of South Carolina and Daniel Howell of Utah State were third team honorees last year who made the first team this season. Barrefors, Bolgert and Corder are earning Capital One Academic All-America® honors for the third time. Bolgert was a second team selection in 2010 while Barrefors and Corder were members of the third team in 2010. Rounding out the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Men’s Track & Field/Cross Country first team are junior of Duke University, graduate student Eric Finan of the University of Cincinnati, and senior John Kline of Arizona State University. A graduate student in engineering with a 4.00 G.P.A., Heath was a 10-time All-American at Stanford. The Winona, Minn., native placed 11th at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships in the 5,000 meters and anchored the distance medley relay to a fourth-place finish. The 2011 NCAA Indoor champion in the 3,000-meter run, he was the 2010 Pac-12 Athlete of the Year and Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year for cross country. A senior economics major with a 3.86 G.P.A., Derrick is a 14-time All-American. The Naperville, Ill., native was the NCAA runner-up in cross country and also finished second in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters indoors. Derrick also placed third in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The 2012 Pac-12 Track Athlete of the Year, he is a two-time USTFCCCA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for cross country, a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winner and the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year for cross country. Unterreiner, a senior history major with a 4.00 G.P.A., is a two-time All-American who finished 13th at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 10,000 meters and 15th at the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships in the 5,000. A native of Gig Harbor, Wash., he completes the Stanford contingent on 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Men’s Track & Field/Cross Country first team. He was the NCAA Elite 88 Award Winner at the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships and the Elite 89 Award Winner at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Nebraska was the only other school with multiple selections to the Capital One Academic All- America® Division I Men’s Track & Field/Cross Country first team as Barrefors and Polacek represented the Cornhuskers. A senior computer science major with a 3.75 G.P.A., Barrefors finished eighth in the decathlon at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships to earn first team All-America honors. It was his sixth All-American distinction. The Stockholm, Sweden, native was the Big Ten Outdoor Decathlon Champion in 2012 and earned the NCAA Elite 88 Award in 2010. Polacek, a senior English education major with a 3.91 G.P.A, earned All-American honors twice. He placed fourth indoors in the pole vault in 2011 and tied for 11th in 2012. A native of Kearney, Neb., he is a two-time team captain and was named All-Big 12 four times. Batty, Price Top Capital One Academic All-America® Track & Field/Cross Country Teams – page 3 .A senior civil engineering major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A., Barry was the Elite 89 recipient during the NCAA Indoor Championships, where he earned All-America honors as part of the seventh-place distance medley relay team for Texas A&M. He also ran the first leg of the distance medley relay team that won the Big 12 indoor title in a meet record time. A native of Texarkana, Tex., Barry was the recipient of the Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarship from the Big 12. Bolgert, who graduated from Marquette with bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and physics and a 3.99 G.P.A. will begin work on a doctorate in physics at Princeton University in the fall. A three-time Capital One Academic All-American® selection, he was a first team pick last year and made the third team in 2010. A native of Sheboygan, Wis., he was named the 2011 BIG EAST Male Scholar-Athlete for Cross Country. He placed 38th at the 2011 NCAA Great Lakes Regional and ranks among the top 10 all-time at Marquette in five events. Corder, a senior mathematics major at Alabama with a 4.00 G.P.A., has earned Capital One Academic All-America® notice three times. A native of Pickerington, Ohio, he is a recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. He was a finalist for both the Rhodes Scholarship and the Southeastern Conference Davis Community Service Award. A senior chemistry and economics major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Carey has twice been named as the Rice Scholar Athlete of the Year. He finished 26th at the 2011 Conference USA Cross Country championships. The San Antonio, Texas, native was the 2010-11 C-USA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for cross country. A senior management and international business major with a 3.91 G.P.A., Reitze was the 2012 Southeastern Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year. The Bergisch-Gladbach, Germany, native is a four-time USTFCCCA All-American in the pole vault at South Carolina. He finished second at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships and is the South Carolina pole vault record holder indoors and outdoors. Howell, a senior wildlife sciences & rangeland resources major with a 3.96 G.P.A., earned first team All-Western Athletic Conference honoree during his career at Utah State. A native of Manti, Utah, he won the 3,000m and 5,000m at the 2012 WAC Indoor Championships, while also capturing the 3,000m steeplechase and 5,000m titles at the 2012 WAC Outdoor Championships. Howell won five individual WAC titles during his career. He is an 11-time Academic All-WAC honoree. Beach, a junior psychology major with a 3.51 G.P.A. at Duke University, was the 2012 NCAA Indoor Heptathlon champion with 6,138 points, the third-most all-time in collegiate competition. He was also the runner-up in the decathlon at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Albuquerque, N.M., native is the world record holder for the indoor heptathlon 1,000 meters with a time of 2:23.63. He won the heptathlon at the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Championships and was the runner-up in the decathlon at the 2012 ACC Outdoor Championships. Finan, a graduate student in mechanical engineering with a 3.79 G.P.A., was the 2012 BIG EAST Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A native of New Richmond, Ohio, he was also named Cincinnati’s 2012 Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Male Athlete of the Year and Senior Male Athlete of the Year. The 2011 BIG EAST cross country champion, Finan was a 2011 USTFCCCA All-American in cross country and track. He is the school record holder in the 3K & 5K (indoors) and 5K and 10K (outdoors). A senior kinesiology major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Kline earned second team All-America honors as part of the 4x400-meter relay team that finished 10th at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships for Arizona State. The Phoenix native is a USTFCCCA Division I All-Academic selection, a two-time MPSF All- Academic selection, and was named to the Pac-12 All-Academic first team three times. – more –

Five of the 15 scholar-athletes on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Men’s Track & Field/Cross Country first team have perfect 4.0 G.P.A.’s. The average G.P.A. of the first is a very impressive 3.88.

Seniors Tara Diebold of Arkansas, senior of Villanova, and junior Jordan Hasay of Oregon join Price as repeat selections on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country first team. Juniors Brigetta Barrett of Arizona and Anne Kesselring of Oregon were second team honorees last year. Diebold was also a second team selection on the 2010 Capital One Academic All-America® team. Rounding out the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country first team are graduate student of Hannah Brooks of Florida State, junior Frances Dowd of Virginia Tech, graduate student Kate Harrison and junior Kaitlyn Gillespie of West Virginia, senior Leigh Gilmore of Alabama, senior Ryann Krais of Kansas State, Kathy Kroeger of Stanford, junior Nachelle Mackie of Brigham Young and senior Ellen Wortham of Tennessee. Three schools, including Oregon, Tennessee and West Virginia, each placed two scholar-athletes on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country first team. Hasay, a native of Arroyo Grande, Cal., is a business administration major with a 3.98 G.P.A. She was a valuable part of Oregon’s third straight NCAA Indoor Track & Field national championship team, and national runner-up squads at the NCAA outdoor and cross country championship meets in 2011-12. Hasay was the NCAA West Region cross country champion and national runner-up. She also scored in the indoor mile and 3,000 meters, and took third in the outdoor 1,500 meter run. In 2011, she was the first sophomore to be named Capital One Academic All-America ® of the Year. Kesselring, a business administration major who owns a 4.05 G.P.A., was the 2011 NCAA Outdoor champion in the 800 meters. She placed fifth at this year’s national meet. The Nurnberg, Germany native helped Oregon win its third straight NCAA indoor title in 2012 by anchoring the second place distance medley relay team. Harrison, a graduate exercise physiology student with a 4.00 GPA, finished eighth at the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championship, the best-ever finish by a West Virginia runner. The , Ontario, Canada native also earned All-Mid-Atlantic Region and All-BIG EAST honors with top five finishes. She finished seventh in the 10,000-meter run at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Gillespie, a native of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, has a 4.0 G.P.A. while majoring in exercise physiology. She earned All-American honors for West Virginia twice. She finished 27th at the 2011 NCAA Cross Country championship Meet. Gillespie is a two-time All-BIG EAST honoree and an NCAA Mid-Atlantic All-Region selection. She placed placing seventh in both races 2011. A native of Maryville, Tenn., Wortham joins Price as Tennessee teammates on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country first team. A psychology major with a 3.88 G.P.A., she earned an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. A nine-time USTFCCCA All- American for the Lady Vols, she ran a leg on the NCAA Indoor champion distance medley relay team. She was also the SEC indoor runner-up in the event. A native of Branson, Mo., she has been a regular on the SEC Spring Honor Roll and the USTFCCCA All-Academic team during her career. A three-time Honda Sports Award winner at Villanova, Reid is an English and communications major with a 3.39 G.P.A. A native of Newmarket, Ontario, Canada, she won five NCAA championships in her career, including a pair of NCAA cross country titles. She also won the 1,500 meter outdoor title and the 5,000 meters outdoor title. She also anchored the indoor distance medley relay team in 2010 to finish in the top three for the Honda Cup. Reid was a 12-time NCAA All-American and he was a 12-time BIG EAST champion. A four-time NCAA Division I champion for Arizona in the , Barrett is a theatre arts major with a 3.51 G.P.A. A native of Wappingers Falls, N.Y., she has cleared 6-feet 4.75-inches (1.95m) this season and is tied for the fourth-best mark in the world. She has also tied for the second-best mark in the U.S. to meet the Olympic Games “A” standard. She was the 2011 U.S. champion in the event and won the gold medal at the World University Games in , China in August 2011. Brooks, a native of Caterham, Great Britain, maintains a 4.0 G.P.A. while pursuing her master’s degree in sports psychology at Florida State. She earned All-American, South Region and All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors in cross country. She led the Seminoles to the ACC and NCAA South Region championships, and a fourth place national finish. Brooks was a member of the ACC indoor champion distance medley relay team and she was the ACC outdoor champion in the 5,000 meters. An accomplished pianist, she has USTFCCCA All-Academic honors in both cross country and track. An environmental policy and planning major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Dowd was the NCAA Elite 89 Award winner at the 2012 NCAA Indoor track and field championships. The Fairfax, Va., native took third in the 800 meters at the 2012 ACC Indoor Meet. She also ran 15th at the NCAA Indoor meet to earn second- team All-America honors. She broke school records at Virginia Tech in both indoor 600 and 800 runs. A civil engineering major with a 4.0 G.P.A., Gilmore earned an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. The Grove Hill, Ala., native was Alabama’s top finisher in three cross country meets, including the NCAA Regional. The winner of the SEC Davis Community Service Award, she had Alabama’s fastest 1,500 meter time during the outdoor season, a mark that ranks eighth all-time at Alabama. Krais graduated from Kansas State in May with her degree in psychology and 3.95 G.P.A. She earned the NCAA Elite 89 Award at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Meet. Krais won the 2012 Big 12 titles in both the heptathlon and pentathlon. The 2011 NCAA outdoor heptathlon champion, she earned All-American honors in the heptathlon, 400 hurdles and pentathlon during her career. Kroeger, who has a double major in mathematics and computational science with a 3.95 G.P.A., has been a six-time NCAA distance performer for Stanford during her career. The Franklin, Tenn., native has placed fifth in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships over the past three seasons. She finished 21st at the 2011 NCAA Cross Country meet in 2011 and is a two-time Pac- 12 cross country runner-up. The 2012 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor 800-meter national champion at Brigham Young, Mackie is an elementary education major with a 3.98 G.P.A.
