REES AND RUDD UNVEIL NEW TRUMPER STAND AT SCG

December 13 2008

Premier Nathan Rees today joined with Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to officially unveil the ’s new $82 million Victor Trumper Stand.

The new 12,000 seat stand was completed after 22 months of construction thanks to matching $25 million State and Commonwealth funding grants.

“The new state of the art Victor Trumper Stand brings the SCG’s total capacity to around 46,000 people, just in time for the New Years Test,” Mr Rees said.

“This is a $25 million investment from the State Government to upgrade the home of cricket in our State, matched by the Rudd Government.

“It is fitting for the grandstand to be named after Victor Trumper, a sporting legend with class on and off the field.

“The stand, located on the site of the old Hill, features 12,000 comfortable new flip-up seats with around 8,700 of them undercover to provide shade on hot summer days.

“As well as an outstanding view of the pitch, the new stand offers a range of facilities named for NSW cricket legends.

“The 500 seat Room and 200 seat Room are premier function rooms and the Stand is going to be very popular with fans of the game.

“Other facilities including a large food court and escalator entry will also be very popular with visitors.

Sport and Recreation Minister Kevin Greene said Victor Trumper wasn’t just an outstanding cricketer, he also excelled at rugby league and played representative Australian rules.

“The Victor Trumper Stand is like the man in whose honour it was named -- a spectacular all-rounder,” Mr Greene said.

“The Stand will meet the needs of future SCG visitors and respect the valuable history of the iconic ground.

“I encourage every NSW sports fan to make the most of this momentous occasion and come see a great game from the Victor Trumper Stand this summer for the Sydney Test or limited overs matches.”
