The criteria includes: an upperclassman, who has shown true dedication to the University community, has demonstrated outstanding team leadership, and has shown exemplary school and community citizenship. The award is named after former WSU student-athlete Randy Guzowski. During his playing days (1977-80), the three-year letterwinner consistently contributed to the program both on and off the fi eld. Following his playing career, Randy continued to serve the University. He joined the WSU police force in 1987 and served 15 years before passing away on December 23, 2001, from complications following a kidney and liver transplant. The inaugural winner, in 2002, of the Randy Guzowski Award was senior off ensive lineman Joel Grambau. Senior defensive back Ryan Rutley was the 2003 recipient, while junior defensive back Ryan Oshnock was given the award three times from 2004-06. The 2007 recipient was senior linebacker Alan Guy, with junior Bruno Shkreli earning the award in 2008. Fifth-year senior fullback Brian Rilley was the 2009 recipient, while junior Randy Guzowski from his running back Josh Renel received the award following both the 2010 and 2011 campaigns. playing days at WSU.
