Alberton Cemetery Walking Tour—November 2— A Great Success

On Saturday November 2 it was cold , windy and for the majority the day wet and raining. We had calls of “Is the walking tour still on “and with a little bit of perseverance and support from above the rain stopped at exactly 5.30pm and the waking tour began.

We met so many interesting people that came on the walking tour to learn more about their ancestors and what made the day super special was the stories told by the participants such as John & Bev Harrop from Stratford who had been coming to Port Albert for years and never knew until recently that their Grandparents were buried in the Alberton Ceme- tery.

Eric Greenaway whose Great Grandparents reside at Alberton shared his memories by providing photo's of the couple and a book displaying their original thatched cottage—a real journey back in time.

We had the pleasure of hearing Sandra Lee’s story , a descendant of the Appleyards ( 22 buried in the cemetery ) and how she is work- ing to restore some of the graves. Then we had the pleasure of having Bruce Salisbury come all the way from . Just to name a few. A special thank you to Eric and Brian for being the grave diggers “Doug “and thank you to all that came on the first Alberton Walk- ing Tour. Looking forward to the next tour on December 28. With the recent devastation in New South Wales and Queensland words are never enough to convey the sadness and hurt our fellow Australian’s have endured since the start of November with the loss of life , homes , land , livestock , koalas , kangaroos and many more Australian icons. Just In November over 540 homes lost compared to 57 in the whole fire season last year and we are not yet fully into Summer yet !! What makes communities even more angry is that some of the over 100 fires were deliberately light. What kind of person puts innocent people through this torture.

The Premier of has openly stated that this Summer we will experience severe weather with heat waves expected and with that our own turn for potentially devastating bushfires.

The residents of Langsborough and Port Albert are surely vulnerable to an outbreak isolating our towns should a fire start in Alberton via the South Highway.

The nominated evacuation / safe area for Langsborough / Port Albert residence is the Coast Guard / Yacht Club building in Bay Street, Port Albert ( Turn left @ the Maritime Musuem )

As a community and seeing what is happening North of us we need to ensure WE ARE PREPARED FOR FIRE !!!!

Special Announcement by Prime Minister Scott Morrison—Thursday November 10,2019

Farmers and regional businesses will be offered super-cheap loans to keep afloat during the drought under sweeping changes to an existing finance scheme.

As part of a $500 million drought stimulus package to be announced on Thursday, the Morrison Government plans to overhaul the Regional Investment Corporation's (RIC) funding rules.

The ABC understands $2 million loans under the RIC would be offered to farmers under a reconfigured 10-year payback schedule.

The first two years would be at no interest and no repayment, followed by three years interest-only and then another five years to pay loans back.

The loans would be available to farmers to feed, water, freight and stock their businesses, or anything that might keep their operations going.

Businesses that support or supply farmers in drought-stricken areas would be eligible for $500,000 loans under the same interest and repayment arrangements.

While the Government expects the loans could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars, most of the cost of this measure would be "off-budget".

Key Points:

Government loans with interest-free periods will be offered to drought-affected farmers and businesses. The loans will be part of a $500 million federal government drought stimulus package Regional councils and roads will also receive funding in a bid to boost rural jobs

Boiling Down Vat. These vats were used to boil down fur seal and sheep carcasses to obtain fat and oil. In later years they were used to preserve cotton fishing nets by soaking them in a solution of water and bark from wattle trees, this process was known as ‘tanning’. The vats were also used to soak nets in a tar based solution to stiffen the

cords, making them less likely to tangle.

Nautical Trivia — In The Doldrums

Meaning in low spirits. In the 19th century the word doldrum meant a slow or dull person, so the doldrums was a general state of low spirits. In the middle of the century the word was used to denote the state of ships experienc- ing becalming In the area just north of the equator between the trade winds. The word was then used geographi- cally to refer to the area itself rather than the state of the crew. ********************************************************************************************* The volunteers and friends of Port Albert Maritime Museum take this opportunity to wish all Port Albert residents and visitors a joyful Christmas and best wishes for a safe and healthy 2020.

Promotion and Marketing of Port Albert Submitted By Cherie Smirl

Port Albert has been in the spotlight in recent weeks with a visit from Heather Pascoe-Smith and Alex Feeney of Expanding Horizons, a distribution partner for group tours across who were in Gippsland to scout new locations for group tours.

Members of PAPA met with Heather and Alex at the invitation of Destination Gippsland’s Marketing Manager, Alison Conroy in Port Albert to discuss the feasibility of Port Albert as a day destination for a series of Client Famil tours of the Gippsland region.

Both Heather and Alex were incredibly impressed with what the Port has to offer and have recently confirmed Port Albert as part of their itinerary for their first tour under this new format in February 2020.

We look forward to discussing details of the tour over the coming weeks and the benefits it can bring to Port Albert, and strongly believe this to be the first in a number of tours we can expect into our region from Expand- ing Horizons, and most specifically including Port Albert.

My personal thanks to those who made themselves available to meet with Alex and Heather, and for your great work in showcasing Port Albert as a destination. Cherie Smirl [email protected]

Exploring Our Region— Ninety Mile Beach

From the shallow inlets near Port Albert to the wide open waterways of Lakes Entrance lies the Ninety Mile Beach – a 90-mile long stretch of pristine golden sand that separates the from Bass Strait.

This is one of the most natural and unspoilt beaches in the world and is ideal for any number of beach activities from beach fishing and swimming to walking, whale and dolphin-spotting or just lazing in the sun.

The beach lies on the edge of a long slender sand dune and the absence of rocky outcrops or headlands results in a vista of endless sand that stretches as far as the eye can see.

The beach is believed to be the fourth longest uninterrupted beach in the world, behind Praia do Cassino on the Bra- zilian southern coast, Padre Island on the US Gulf Coast and Eighty Mile Beach in Western Australia, which is actu- ally 140 miles (230 km) long.

Beneath the waters, the sand plains harbour a vast array of marine life. In ten square metres 860 species were discov- ered living in the sand and in one square metre a staggering 187 species.

The beach can be reached from the Highway via the towns of Woodside Beach, Seaspray, Golden Beach , Loch Sport and Lakes Entrance. Unspoilt and offering clean white sand, wonderful crashing waves and a natural bush environment, these seaside towns create the perfect holiday location.

The beach's length ensures that the waves break too close to the beach for good surfing, and there are strong rip cur- rents and cross-currents that make conditions rather hazardous. The local authorities recommend that anyone who wishes to swim should do so at Woodside, Seaspray and Lakes Entrance, which have life saving beach patrols dur- ing the summer season.

A beach wheelchair is available from the Lakes Entrance Main Beach and Surf Lifesaving Club. Ring 03 5155 1333 to confirm availability. A kiosk and accessible toilets are available at the Surf Club. A beach wheelchair is also available from the Seaspray Surf Life Saving Club (03 5146 4231) throughout January, and on weekends and public holidays.

Port Albert’s—Living Treasure— Graeme Ireland

Graeme was born July 17,1929 , and was only 10 when WW2 broke out, however Graeme’s past is one of great success and adventure and hope that you enjoy his story.

Graeme was the 2nd son of Alice and Albert Ireland and brother to Ernest.

The family grew up and lived in North Brighton and both boys went to Brighton Grammar.

To tell Graeme’s story we need to go way back to his Great Great Grandfather & Grandmother who came to Australia from Northern Ireland during massive unrest. They landed in Adelaide then travelled to and opened a fruit , vegetable and flower shop in Carlton.

As time went on the flower business became the significant part of the business to the extent that when Graeme took over as the 3rd generation , Ireland Florist was the largest wholesaler of flowers in Australia.

During Graeme’s early life his father was enlisted into the army and was a horseman in WW1 , Graeme was only 10 at the time then when WW2 broke out once again Graeme’s father tried to enlist but was rejected due to ill health however became part of the Secret Service and used working at Irelands Florist as the perfect cover.

While Ernest never worked in the family business Graeme did and at the age of 52 an offer too good to refuse came knocking on his business door and the business was then sold.

Then Graeme had time to take up his love of sailing and over a period of 5 years built Nefertiti 1 a beautiful Robert's 53 foot sloop that took him to exotic parts of Asia around Australia and many other adventures.

Graeme loved his time touring the World in Nefertiti 1 and the stories he told and wonders he saw lightened his eyes and senses—you could see how much he loved those times.

Graeme has been a fabric of the Port Albert community , was part of Progress until only a few years ago and his contribution was invaluable.

Unfortunately , Graeme has his house on the market as the gardens and upkeep are getting much to hard and looking to relo- cate closer to if not in Yarram. However Graeme’s heart will always be in Port Albert.

Graeme comes from a family of longevity with his mother making it to 102 and his brother Ernest to 99 so we look forward to having Graeme around for many more years to come.

I would like to thank Graeme for his time in providing his story and to Di Parsonage for filming the interview We hope that you have enjoyed learning more about Graeme , a Port Albert Living Legend.

Alan Hall re-elected Mayor for Second Term, Maher Deputy

Loch Sport resident Cr Alan Hall was today re-elected for his second consecutive term as Mayor of Wellington Shire Council, with Cr Gayle Maher of Port Albert elected Deputy Mayor.

Cr Alan Hall was first elected Mayor in November 2018, after selling his business in Loch Sport and retiring in the town with his wife Jill. He has a strong financial background, holding senior finance and management roles in both the public and private sector.

Cr Hall thanked his fellow councillors for allowing him to have a second term as Mayor.

“I am humbled that my fellow councillors have shown trust in me to continue as Mayor for another term,” he said.

“While we have achieved a great deal in the past 12 months, I’m excited to continue this great work to tick off some more valu- able projects.

“My first term was incredibly rewarding and as a group I’d like to say congratulations on what we have achieved this past 12 months.

“I will do my very best to achieve against any expectations you may have of me.”

Deputy Mayor, Cr Gayle Maher is heavily involved in the Port Albert community and was elected to Wellington Shire Council in 2016.

Cr Maher said she was looking forward to the challenge of Deputy Mayor.

“Thank you for your support and I will certainly do my upmost in representing this council and supporting the Mayor in this deputy role,” Cr Maher said.

“I’d like to thank rate-payers who voted me in to this privileged position to represent them on council and I look forward to the work ahead.”
