Tel: 08 8672 5920 http://cooberpedyregionaltimes.wordpress.com Thursday 25 August 2016 BIG WINCH TO BE REDEVELOPED INTO WORLD CLASS ATTRACTION Owners of the Coober Pedy IGA, the Carter family, have recently purchased The Big Winch site and plan to redevelop the facility. It will be renamed ‘The Big Winch Visitor and Cultural Centre’.

Patriarch of the family, Mr Tim Carter said that since arriving in Coober Pedy four years ago, he often looked at the Big Winch as an underdeveloped opportunity.

“I was honestly a bit saddened that a local landmark like the Big Winch was rundown,” explained Mr Carter.

“We were lucky enough to purchase it last year and after many discussions with Penny and Declan, we enlisted the help of a consultant. When we are finished we will have developed a world-class attraction that we hope that the whole of the South Australian outback will benefit from.”

Tim said that the redeveloped attraction will not only showcase Coober Pedy but also the surrounding region including places steeped in history such as the Oodnadatta Track and the towns along it. Iconic outback locations like Dalhousie Springs, Lake Eyre and The Painted Desert will also be featured. The focal point of the attraction will be a light and sound show to be produced by one of ’s most internationally respected cinematographers and directors.

“What we found when we first came to Coober Pedy was a lack of things to do at night,” explained Mr Carter. Coober Pedy icon, The Big Winch - long overdue for a facelift “Our hometown of Peterborough was in a similar situation a few years back and they did this light and sound show and it injected new life into the local tourism industry. We want this new tourist attraction to do the same here and By Stephen Staines encourage tourists to stay an extra night or two and that’ll benefit all the businesses.”

The development plans for the location are well underway Declan and Penny Carter - new owners of and the sound and light presentation is currently in pre- The Big Winch. Redevelopment expected to production phase. Coober Pedy’s redeveloped landmark will include opal and opal mining displays as well as music be completed by 2017 and performances showcasing local history and culture. “We’ve had great support from SA Tourism for the “Me and my family love Coober Pedy and the outback The refurbished lookout will be a place where visitors development,” said Tim. “Coober Pedy is a place that is a and the people that make it such a great place to live and and locals will have the opportunity to savour the flavours key part of their overall marketing of the outback and our do business. With a backdrop of Coober Pedy’s unforgettable sunsets, With the project completion date in mid-2017, the Carter “We want to work together with the existing tourism the new development certainly conjures an alluring image; family is certainly not wasting anytime bringing their vision operators and businesses in Coober Pedy so that we can maybe that’s why the South Australian Tourism into reality. produce something that we as a town and as a region can Commission is climbing on board. all be proud of. It’ll be something that’ll benefit all of us,” Mr Carter concluded.

Page 4 Coober Pedy Regional Times Thursday 25 August 2016 Coober Pedy Races 2016 What an eventful weekend the Coober Pedy races and gymkhana was this year. Saturday had it all, great races, excellent stalls, activities for both competitors and spectators, participation from Black Dog Ride Members, spills and thrills.

Saturday saw the running of the Opal Inn Coober Pedy Cup with one of the biggest fields we have had in the last 6 years. Once again the starting gates allowed the race to start in front of the spectators adding to the excitement of the event.

With so much happening the committee and in particular the men in the middle needed to do a few program changes which unfortunately led to not many senior motorbike events on Saturday but they made up for it with Sunday’s events.

Sunday was a quieter day but still plenty of fun to be had. The Wear-house Arcade Children’s events were very popular again with all the kids enjoying the fun on the track. The Tony Wong Ladies Bracelet also drew the crowd.

The local community and visitors to Coober Pedy showed that the event can still attract a significant crowd with everyone enjoying their day out.

The committee would like to thank Jason Jones, Eddie Nunn and Stephen Marlow for their tireless work over the weekend. They had a lot of family, friends and visitors helping them but without their commitment to running the events, organising people to do the various jobs and Offical Opening with Stephen Marlow representing Coober Pedy Race Club, Merv Stornton making tough decision on the day the races would not be representing Black Dog Ride and Bob Fulker and Leighton Randell representing OZ Minerals able to happen each year. Thanks to the committee for all the work leading up to The Committee is as follows: the event and on the weekend. Thanks also to all the President (now vacant) sponsors who with short notice were able to commit to helping this event happen and helping to keep Coober Pedy Paul Howard, Vice President on the far north gymkhana and race calendar. Justin Freytag, Secretary Treasurer (now vacant) Next year may well see the Coober Pedy Races and Sharlene Jeffree, Assistant Treasurer Gymkhana run over one day instead of two. The Rod Wells, Bar Manager committee are evaluating whether it can be done and still deliver an event that will both attract visitors to Coober Shelley Wells, Merchandise Pedy and provide a great event for local families. An event is being held in Port Augusta on September 2-4. Exposure 2016 is a community expo on nuclear waste dump plans for South Australia and through it we hope to find answers to some serious questions.

As the SA Government covers 100 sites across the state with their ‘Know Nuclear’ roadshow, Exposure 2016 will offer alternative information and the opportunity to connect as a community.

You will hear from health and economic experts, Traditional Owners, pastoralists, tourism operators and others affected by these proposals. There will be opportunities to share stories and ideas, ask questions and make plans for action.

Right now plans for both national and international radioactive waste dumps are being actively pursued in S.A.

1. In April the federal government selected Wallerberdina near Hawker in the Flinders Ranges as a possible site for a national low and intermediate level radioactive waste dump.

2. In May the SA nuclear Royal Commission recommended that developing a high level international waste dump be “pursued as soon as possible”. The SA government is consulting with communities and will make a formal response before the end of the year. Do you want South Australia to become a nuclear waste dump? These plans and decisions would directly affect the future Hookina Creek, Wallerberdina Photo: Regina McKenzie of all of us. It is time to gather the facts and get informed and active!
