The Top 8 seeds are: Isner, Gael Monfils, Bernard Tomic, Benoit Paire, Steve Johnson, Jack Sock, Alexander Zverev and Sam Querrey. The lone former champion in the field is No. 11 seed Alexandr Dolgopolov, the 2012 winner. Isner is joined by five other former finalists in the draw: Vasek Pospisil (2014), Monfils (2011), Marcos Baghdatis (2010), Viktor Troicki (2008) and Gilles Muller (2004). BIG JOHN TOP SEED: No. 1 American Isner is the top seed in Washington for the first time in nine appearances. The 31-year-old has a 23-8 career record and is playing in the tournament for the ninth time in 10 years (missed 2012 when event was same week as London Olympics). Isner has reached the quarter-finals or better six times, including runner-up efforts in 2007 (l. to Roddick), 2013 (l. to del Potro) and last year (l. to Nishikori). He helped the U.S. to a 2-0 lead after the first day of the Davis Cup quarter-final tie against Croatia by defeating Borna Coric, Washington’s No. 16 seed, in straight sets, but lost in straight sets to former US Open champion Marin Cilic as Croatia completed a 3-2 turnaround. Isner is looking to extend his ATP World Tour title streak to seven consecutive seasons. Seven of his 10 career titles have come in July or August, but none have come at a tournament above the ATP World Tour 250 level. AMERICANS AT THE SHARP END: Since the July 11 Emirates ATP Rankings, there have been four Americans in the Top 30: No. 16 John Isner, No. 25 Steve Johnson, No. 26 Jack Sock and No. 29 Sam Querrey. The last time four Americans were in the Top 30 came on Oct. 22, 2012 with Isner (11), Querrey (23), Fish (26) and Roddick (29). MONFILS MAKES RETURN: No. 2 seed Gael Monfils is making his first appearance at Washington since reaching the final in 2011 (l. to Stepanek). He also was a semi-finalist in his other visit in 2007 (l. to Isner). The 29-year-old Frenchman has a 21-9 match record this season, reaching finals at Rotterdam (l. to Klizan) and ATP Masters 1000 Monte-Carlo (l. to Nadal). He has struggled with injuries and illness recently, and this will only be his fourth tournament since May. He withdrew from Munich (groin strain) before pulling out of Roland Garros and Halle (virus). YOUNG GUNS OUT IN FORCE: There are six #NextGen stars in the main draw, led by No. 7 seed and wild card entry Alexander Zverev, who is making his second straight Washington appearance. Last year, the 19-year-old German became the youngest Citi Open quarter-finalist since Andy Roddick in 2000 (d. Anderson, l. to Cilic). Here is a look at the #NextGen players in the field, who are ranked in Top 200 and were born after December 31, 1994: Age Ranking 2016 W-L Alexander Zverev (WC) 19 No. 27 29-17 Borna Coric 19 No. 53 17-18 Taylor Fritz 18 No. 67 9-12 Yoshihito Nishioka 20 No. 93 4-6 Jared Donaldson (Q) 19 No. 153 0-4 Frances Tiafoe (WC) 18 No. 156 1-3 Citi Open Day 1 – Monday, July 18, 2016 Page 2 of 8 www.ATPWorldTour.com YOUTH ON THE RISE: All four main draw wild cards are teenagers with No. 7 seed Alexander Zverev (19), local product Frances Tiafoe (18), and the last two Wimbledon junior champions Reilly Opelka (18) and Dennis Shapovalov (17), who is the youngest player in the draw. Opelka is making his second main draw appearance on the ATP World Tour (also 2016 Houston) while Shapovalov is making his debut. The Canadian left-hander has climbed from No. 1,162 at the end of last year to a career-high No. 371 as of July 18. DOUBLES DRAW: Top seeds Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares are teaming up for the first time since February, when they reached the semi-finals on home soil in Rio de Janeiro and the quarter- finals in São Paulo. The Brazilians have a 4-5 career record together in ATP World Tour finals. The No. 2 seeds are Daniel Nestor and Edouard Roger-Vasselin, No. 3 are Florian Mergea and 2014 champion Horia Tecau and No. 4 are Treat Huey and Max Mirnyi, who are coming off a semi-final at Wimbledon. Teenagers Taylor Fritz and Reilly Opelka are partners for the third time as pros. Last year they lost in the 1R at the US Open and reached the semi-finals at the Sacramento Challenger. Teaming up for the first time are fellow Americans Denis Kudla and Frances Tiafoe, who both trained at the Junior Tennis Champions Center in nearby College Park, Md. DAY 1 PREVIEW: Main draw play gets underway on four courts at the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center on Monday, with nine first-round matches on the schedule. In the first ATP match on Stadium Court, main draw debutant Daniel Evans looks to build on his third-round run at Wimbledon against Germany’s Benjamin Becker, before Denis Kudla becomes the first American to make an appearance on Stadium Court when he faces Australia’s John Millman. Kudla, from the D.C. suburb of Arlington, Va., is seeking his very first win at his hometown tournament. The 23- year-old is 0-6 overall at the Citi Open in singles, doubles and qualifying matches. There are seven of the 17 Americans in the draw due on court on Day 1, including an all-American clash between qualifier Alex Kuznetsov and Bjorn Fratangelo. Among the other highlights are the return of 2014 finalist Vasek Pospisil, who faces Japan’s Yuichi Sugita on Grandstand 1, and the return of Frances Tiafoe, who made his ATP World Tour debut here two years ago as a 16-year-old. From nearby Hyattsville, Md., Tiafoe faces France’s Adrian Mannarino in the last Stadium Court match.
