DIRECTOR'S VIEW Ryan LaPlante

Holy Hell is insane. I don’t mean that as an insult to its quality (which is a beautiful 70's chic). It’s a good thing. This project is insane - and we’re not making any apologies for it.

Holy Hell is a horror/comedy that satirizes the tropes of classic Action, Horror and Exploitation films. You know: those lovely movies that are shameless and fun in their own special way.

This was my first screenplay. I wrote the original draft in a frenzy after directing a production of the musical RENT!. I’d spent so much time plumbing the depths of emotional honesty that I wanted to create the least sensitive, least understanding, most outrageous thing I could. The result of that frenzy was Holy Hell - the world's darkest slapstick comedy. When you watch this film you're seeing a madcap adventure.

Our villains are sadists and deviants: everything has been pushed to the limit. That's because Holy Hell is intended as an escape. Real life can be dark, dangerous and perverse, and this film is those things multiplied tenfold. Hopefully people laugh at Holy Hell’s warped reflection of the dark side of life.

The reactions to the film have been great:

"It's like if John Waters made a horror movie!" “This is Quentin Tarantino on cocaine… well… more cocaine!” “It’s Death Wish meets The Toxic Avenger by way of Hobo with a Shotgun.”

My personal favourite response to the screenplay was “Don't show this to anyone.” That was said by my mother and she ended up designing our costumes, assisted with the gore FX and appears in the film as Sandra Bonner. Some people will, undoubtedly, see Holy Hell as offensive and that's part of the game, but at its core this movie is a gleeful, irreverent takedown of overly-serious films everywhere. My hope is if you do get it, you'll love it.
