Holland, who resides in San Jose, Costa Rica. From 1990 to 1997 Holland coordinated a multi-disciplinary team in a study of ethnic and religious diversity of the Greater Los Angeles Metropolitan Area (GLAMA) from offices on the campus of the William Carey International University in Pasadena, California. One of the main results of this investigation was the creation of a database of all known religious groups in GLAMA and the production of a series of research reports on each of the seven regions of GLAMA. The GLAMA database included more than 12,500 listings for the five-county area, which include parts of Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside and Ventura counties.

  • On Unity, Its Implications, and the Pros and Cons of the “Joint Proposal”
August 2008 Dear Brotherhood Members, A very important question is before all the members of our Episcopate. Should we unite with the other Romanian Diocese in America, which is "autonomous" from the Patriarch in Bucharest, and have a new Metropolia in America which would have "maximum autonomy" from Bucharest??? We are sending you the 20 point Proposal which the Joint Dialogue Commission (JDC) developed and wanted the Episcopate Council to endorse. The Council had too many questions which did not receive answers and as a result, the Council proposed a different Motion and the Motion that the Church Congress approved is also enclosed. The Council and the Congress agreed that "due diligence" is necessary to answer the questions and avoid future problems. Shortly after the Congress ended, the enclosed announcement appeared on the Patriarchate’s website and this started a new series of concerns because I believe no one on the JDC, nor the Council, nor the Congress wants us to be under the authority of the Patriarch. Autocephaly is better independence than Autonomy! The OCA is autocephalous from the Patriarch of Moscow and we have a very comfortable agreement with the OCA. I believe that we have a greater strength of Orthodox unity in America through the OCA than we would have by leaving the OCA and merging with the other Romanian Diocese. We would welcome your opinions and questions. Yours in Orthodoxy, Orthodox Brotherhood of the U.S.A. Dan Miclau, President August, 2008 Dear Brotherhood Members: At the Summer Board meeting in July it was agreed upon to send a special “Newsline” that carried information about “unity” of the ROEA with the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese of Americas (ROAA) and the Joint Dialogue Committee (JDC) Joint Proposal, given to the delegates at last month’s Episcopate Congress.

However, it would not have been possible to complete this work alone. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all those who assisted me in the completion of my research project. First and foremost I would like to express my sincere gratitude and thanks to my supervisor Prof. Giuseppe Sciortino, who has supported and guided me throughout the conduct of research and writing of the thesis. All his valuable suggestions and constructive criticisms have encouraged me to be more creative and helped me to improve my thesis. I would like to also convey my special acknowledgement to my second supervisor, Prof. Gianfranco Poggi, for his important contributions and for giving me the enthusiasm and inspiration for my research project. Attending his seminars and discussing my thesis work with him was always encouraging and entertaining. I consider myself very fortunate for being their student. During my research project I have met many researchers and Ph.D. students, whose contributions were very important. I would like to express my heartiest thanks to Iuliana Conovici with whom I met during my first visit to Bucharest. Her detailed comments and insight have been of great value to me.

THE ORTHODOX CHURCH IN AMERICA THE ROMANIAN ORTHODOX EPISCOPATE OF AMERICA The Most Reverend Dr. NATHANIEL Popp, Archbishop The Right Reverend IRINEU Duvlea, Auxiliary Bishop July 5, 2008 Ven. Athanasios of Athos The Most Reverend NICOLAE Archbishop The Right Reverend IOAN CASIAN Clergy and Lay Delegates of the Archdiocesan Congress Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese in the Americas Your Eminence, Your Grace, Reverend Clergy and Congress Delegates: We fraternally inform you that the Congress of the Episcopate during its Friday and Saturday sessions of July 4 & 5 thoroughly discussed the proposal of the Joint Dialogue Commission. When brought to a vote, the delegates decided “to acknowledge the combined ‘Proposal to Establish a Romanian Orthodox Metropolitanate of North America’ as an acceptable basis to continue the work of the JDC towards a final proposal to be presented to the Romanian Orthodox Church.” The Episcopate Congress recommended that we establish, as soon as possible, special committees: “A Constitution and By-Laws Committee,” “Jurisprudence Committee,” “Finance Committee,” and any other committees that may be necessary to satisfy State Law as regard to due diligence in the merger of two entities. Of course, the members of such committees should be from both of our eparchies and the work should be begun without delay. May the Lord direct our steps toward all good works. +NATHANIEL, Archbishop Mailing: PO Box 309, Grass Lake, Michigan 49240-0309 Shipping: 2535 Grey Tower Road, Jackson, Michigan 49201-9120 Chancery Office: 517.522.4800 Department of Finance: 517.522.3598 Department of Publications: 517.522.3656 Facsimile: 517.522.5907 Email: [email protected] Website: http://www.roea.org .

This appeal to authority and power is achieved most notably through a complex system of ritual acts that are typically "embedded" into the many facets of the monastic life which simultaneously orients the monastic participant towards the correct, "Ortho dox" relationships with those sources of authority on the interactive levels mentioned above.
