This stars one of Thailand's most popular comedians, Piphat Apiraktanakorn, better known by the pseudonym Mahm (usually spelled mom, but he's a guy, not a real mom that I know...) I think this guy is great and funny. It lends credence to my theory that the English subtitles were just awful. Mahm has a 3 minute cameo in Luang Phii Theng, which is a funny part of the film. Try one of the other Thai movies before you go for this one. Especially Ong-Bak, probably the best martial arts film I've ever seen - and Tony Jaa is the best martial arts fighter film I've ever seen (and he does it all without a stunt double, wire, or computer effects). MOVIE REVIEW: Bodyguard 2 is actually a prequel to the bodyguard (not the Kevin Costner-Whitney Houston film), written, directed and starring one of Thailand's best comedians, Pettai Wongkamiao, who holds a very direct face as Captain Hamiao McNim, special agent in the counterterrorism task force Nongwaileum. Outside, he's a man with a plan, but at home, he's an obedient, henpecked husband to his loud-mouthed wife Khiew (Janet Khiew), who doesn't know that her husband is a secret agent. In his latest mission, he gave the task of infiltrating the label, which of course is the front for crime, being in the business of high-end arms trafficking. So this fish out of the water situation for our captain as he gets trained on his entertainment in an attempt to become the best-selling artiste, thereby giving him the longevity to spy around his employer's office, with the help of CIA agent Paula (Jacqueline Apitananaon). Before throwing that dubious eye on these products, I have to admit that the scenes and set parts are rather disjointed, with sub plots introduced with some potential before being completely forgotten just to move on to the next gag. In fact, it's pretty outrageous from the get go, with a 20-minute sequence of action that was packed in kung fu, shootouts, car chases involving motorcycles, a monster truck, a sports car and a mini. This sequence in itself will probably justify the high price in making the film, but unfortunately does not translate to very high production values, the film does not take itself too seriously, and ham it off references from previous Wongkamiao films and lots of view and slaps humor, some bordering on lustful but never revealing nothing naughty. I thought that these efforts, like some other similar militants coming out of Thailand now, puts them on par with the action of productions from Hong Kong in the late 70s and 80s - where cops and robbers tend to junk their weapons for the strike trade, and this happens very often in warehouses stocked with empty boxes for villainous foot soldiers to crash. And there is always a free Caucasian beefcake to challenge our hero, except for this, the result is hilarious on the cheap for most parts. And for those who miss Tony Jaa's uninsuded action, you can catch a glimpse of the Thai action hero in the cameo here, with direct references (for laughs though) on his previous Tom Yum Goong film. And while you keep your eyes peeled for his appearance, you can count the number of familiar parodies/references, my favorite of which is one deliberately imitating John Wu's signature style involving some birds that must be seen to believe Wongkamiao actually chose that quirky tilt, ha! Don't expect a polished action movie, but look forward to something that will tickle your funny bones if you're in the mood for something fluffy and light to pass the time on a rainy weekend.
