In this note we introduce the class of H-groups (or Hall groups) related to the class of B-groups defined by P. Hall in the 1950s. Establishing some basic properties of Hall groups we use them to obtain results concerning embeddings of abelian groups. In particular, we give an explicit classification of all abelian groups that can occur as subgroups in finitely generated metabelian groups. Hall groups allow us to give a negative answer to G. Baumslag’s conjecture of 1990 on the cardinality of the set of isomorphism classes for abelian subgroups in finitely generated metabelian groups. 1 Introduction The subject of our note goes back to the paper of P. Hall [7], which established the properties of abelian normal subgroups in finitely generated metabelian and abelian-by-polycyclic groups. Let B be the class of all abelian groups B, where B is an abelian normal subgroup of some finitely generated group G with polycyclic quotient G=B. It is proved in [7, Lemmas 8 and 5.2] that B H, where the class H of countable abelian groups can be defined as follows (in the present paper, we will call the groups from H Hall groups). By definition, H H if 2 (1) H is a (finite or) countable abelian group, (2) H T K; where T is a bounded torsion group (i.e., the orders of all ele- D ˚ ments in T are bounded), K is torsion-free, (3) K has a free abelian subgroup F such that K=F is a torsion group with trivial p-subgroups for all primes except for the members of a finite set .K/. -

Let G be a finite group and A be a normal subgroup of G. We denote by ncc.A/ the number of G-conjugacy classes of A and A is called n-decomposable, if ncc.A/ = n. Set KG ={ncc.A/|A CG}. Let X be a non-empty subset of positive integers. A group G is called X-decomposable, if KG = X. Ashrafi and his co-authors [1–5] have characterized the X-decomposable non-perfect finite groups for X ={1;n} and n ≤ 10. In this paper, we continue this problem and investigate the structure of X-decomposable non-perfect finite groups, for X = {1; 2; 3}. We prove that such a group is isomorphic to Z6;D8;Q8;S4, SmallGroup(20, 3), SmallGroup(24, 3), where SmallGroup.m; n/ denotes the mth group of order n in the small group library of GAP [11]. Dynamics for Discrete Subgroups of Sl 2(C)
DYNAMICS FOR DISCRETE SUBGROUPS OF SL2(C) HEE OH Dedicated to Gregory Margulis with affection and admiration Abstract. Margulis wrote in the preface of his book Discrete subgroups of semisimple Lie groups [30]: \A number of important topics have been omitted. The most significant of these is the theory of Kleinian groups and Thurston's theory of 3-dimensional manifolds: these two theories can be united under the common title Theory of discrete subgroups of SL2(C)". Introduction A discrete subgroup of PSL2(C) is called a Kleinian group. In this article, we discuss dynamics of unipotent flows on the homogeneous space Γn PSL2(C) for a Kleinian group Γ which is not necessarily a lattice of PSL2(C). Unlike the lattice case, the geometry and topology of the associated hyperbolic 3-manifold M = ΓnH3 influence both topological and measure theoretic rigidity properties of unipotent flows. Around 1984-6, Margulis settled the Oppenheim conjecture by proving that every bounded SO(2; 1)-orbit in the space SL3(Z)n SL3(R) is compact ([28], [27]). -

The solution to the initial vector and nearest distance problem is presented for all irreducible affine reflection groups of rank n ≥ 2, for varying stabilizer subgroups. Moreover, we use a detailed analysis of the geometry of affine reflection groups to produce an efficient decoding algorithm which is equivalent to the maximum-likelihood decoder. Its complexity depends only on the dimension of the vector space containing the codewords, and not on the number of codewords. We give several examples of the decoding algorithm, both to demonstrate its correctness and to show how, in small rank cases, it may be further streamlined by exploiting additional symmetries of the group. 1 1 Introduction Slepian [11] introduced group codes whose codewords represent a finite set of signals combining coding and modulation, for the Gaussian channel. A thorough survey of group codes can be found in [8]. The codewords lie on a sphere in n−dimensional Euclidean space Rn with equal nearest-neighbour distances. This gives congruent maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding regions, and hence equal error probability, for all codewords. Appendix A Group Theory This appendix is a survey of only those topics in group theory that are needed to understand the composition of symmetry transformations and its consequences for fundamental physics. It is intended to be self-contained and covers those topics that are needed to follow the main text. Although in the end this appendix became quite long, a thorough understanding of group theory is possible only by consulting the appropriate literature in addition to this appendix. In order that this book not become too lengthy, proofs of theorems were largely omitted; again I refer to other monographs. From its very title, the book by H. Georgi [211] is the most appropriate if particle physics is the primary focus of interest. The book by G. Costa and G. Fogli [102] is written in the same spirit. Both books also cover the necessary group theory for grand unification ideas. A very comprehensive but also rather dense treatment is given by [428]. Still a classic is [254]; it contains more about the treatment of dynamical symmetries in quantum mechanics. This result follows from a detailed structural analysis of the automorphism groups of such groups. We use an extended version of the theory of the algebraic hull functor initiated by Mostow. We thus make applicable refined methods from the theory of algebraic and arithmetic groups. We also construct examples of polycyclic-by-finite groups which have an automorphism group which does not contain an arithmetic group of finite index. The Tate{Oort group scheme TOp Miles Reid In memory of Igor Rostislavovich Shafarevich, from whom we have all learned so much Abstract Over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p, there are 3 group schemes of order p, namely the ordinary cyclic group Z=p, the multiplicative group µp ⊂ Gm and the additive group αp ⊂ Ga. The Tate{Oort group scheme TOp of [TO] puts these into one happy fam- ily, together with the cyclic group of order p in characteristic zero. This paper studies a simplified form of TOp, focusing on its repre- sentation theory and basic applications in geometry. A final section describes more substantial applications to varieties having p-torsion in Picτ , notably the 5-torsion Godeaux surfaces and Calabi{Yau 3-folds obtained from TO5-invariant quintics. The Frattini Module and P -Automorphisms of Free Pro-P Groups

By Darren Semmen ∗ Abstract If a non-trivial subgroup A of the group of continuous automorphisms of a non- cyclic free pro-p group F has finite order, not divisible by p, then the group of fixed points FixF (A) has infinite rank. The semi-direct product F >!A is the universal p-Frattini cover of a finite group G, and so is the projective limit of a sequence of finite groups starting with G, each a canonical group extension of its predecessor by the Frattini module. Examining appearances of the trivial simple module 1 in the Frattini module’s Jordan-H¨older series arose in investigations ([FK97], [BaFr02] and [Sem02]) of modular towers. The number of these appearances prevents FixF (A) from having finite rank. For any group A of automorphisms of a group Γ, the set of fixed points FixΓ(A) := {g ∈ Γ | α(g) = g, ∀α ∈ A} of Γ under the action of A is a subgroup of Γ. Nielsen [N21] and, for the infinite rank case, Schreier [Schr27] showed that any subgroup of a free discrete group will be free. Tate (cf. [Ser02, I.§4.2, Cor. 3a]) extended this to free pro-p groups. In light of this, it is natural to ask for a free group F , what is the rank of FixF (A)? We show that the resulting algorithm com- pares favorably with the widely applied scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT), speeded up robust features (SURF), and affine-SIFT (ASIFT) methods. Some Groups of Finite Homological Type
Some groups of finite homological type Ian J. Leary∗ M¨ugeSaadeto˘glu† June 10, 2005 Abstract For each n ≥ 0 we construct a torsion-free group that satisfies K. S. Brown’s FHT condition and is FPn, but is not FPn+1. 1 Introduction While working on comparing different notions of Euler characteristic, K. S. Brown introduced a new homological finiteness condition for discrete groups [5, IX.6]. The group G is said to be of finite homological type or FHT if G has finite virtual cohomological dimension, and for every G-module M whose underlying abelian group is finitely generated, the homology groups Hi(G; M) are all finitely generated. If G is FHT , then one may define a ‘na¨ıve Euler characteristic’ for every finite-index subgroup H of G, as the alternating sum of the dimensions of the homology groups of H with rational coefficients. One question that arises is the connection between FHT and the usual homological finiteness conditions FP and FPn, which were introduced by J.-P. Serre [8]. (We shall define these conditions below.) It is easy to see that any group G of type FP is FHT , and one might conjecture that every torsion-free group that is FHT is also of type FP . The aim of this paper is to show that this is not the case. For each n ≥ 0, we exhibit a torsion-free group Gn that is FHT and of type FPn, but that is not of type FPn+1. Our construction is based on R. Bieri’s construction of a group that is FPn but not FPn+1 [2, Prop 2.14]. -
The Affine Group of a Lie Group
THE AFFINE GROUP OF A LIE GROUP JOSEPH A. WOLF1 1. If G is a Lie group, then the group Aut(G) of all continuous auto- morphisms of G has a natural Lie group structure. This gives the semi- direct product A(G) = G-Aut(G) the structure of a Lie group. When G is a vector group R", A(G) is the ordinary affine group A(re). Follow- ing L. Auslander [l ] we will refer to A(G) as the affine group of G, and regard it as a transformation group on G by (g, a): h-^g-a(h) where g, hEG and aGAut(G) ; in the case of a vector group, this is the usual action on A(») on R". If B is a compact subgroup of A(n), then it is well known that B has a fixed point on R", i.e., that there is a point xGR" such that b(x)=x for every bEB. For A(ra) is contained in the general linear group GL(« + 1, R) in the usual fashion, and B (being compact) must be conjugate to a subgroup of the orthogonal group 0(w + l). This conjugation can be done leaving fixed the (« + 1, w + 1)-place matrix entries, and is thus possible by an element of k(n). This done, the translation-parts of elements of B must be zero, proving the assertion. L. Auslander [l] has extended this theorem to compact abelian subgroups of A(G) when G is connected, simply connected and nil- potent. We will give a further extension.
