As mentioned in last week’s bulletin, both St. Lawrence Church and St. Louis Church, of St. John XXIII Parish has reopened to 100% capacity with the requirement that masks must continue to be worn. Therefore, sign up for Masses are no longer needed. The current Weekend Mass Schedule for St. John XXIII Parish is the following: Saturdays: 4:00 PM (English) Vigil Mass in St. Lawrence Sundays: 9:00 AM (English) Mass in St. Louis 11:00 AM (Spanish) Mass in St. Louis 1:00 PM (Spanish) Mass in St. Louis Before the pandemic 7 Masses were offered on the weekend, either simultaneously or with overlapping times between the two churches in our one parish. Several of these Masses were sparse in attendance at times with only 30 people. In preparing for in person Masses to resume during the pandemic with limited socially distant capacity, recognizing that many parishioners would still be uncomfortable returning, I established a temporary schedule based on the most well attended English Masses before the pandemic which in St. Lawrence Church was the 4:00 PM Saturday Vigil Mass and in St. Louis the 9:00 AM on Sunday. Hence, the reason the current English Mass schedule was established in our parish when in person Masses resumed. This also allowed time for the churches to be disinfected before and after each parish Mass, Baptism, Wedding, Funeral, etc. The only Mass that consistently has been filled during the pandemic is the 11:00 AM Spanish Mass in St. Louis Church with overflow at times in the church hall. There was not a need to add an additional Spanish Mass, since we were already offering a 1:00 PM Spanish Mass which has not filled to capacity. It is important to note with this schedule, that in Saint John XXIII Parish we offer 2 English Masses (one in each church of our parish) and 2 Spanish Masses. While the dispensation of the obligation to attend Mass in person has ended, and I encourage and welcome all to return to in person Mass, I also recognize that it remains to be seen how many people will return at this time. We will seek to continue to live stream the 9:00 AM English Mass and the 11:00 AM Spanish Mass on Sundays via our YouTube Channel. Now with 100% capacity allowed with no social distancing there is plenty of room in both churches with our current Mass Schedule. However, the weekend Mass schedule would be re-evaluated based on need due to attendance. Saint John XXIII Parish is one parish community that worships in two sites (St. Lawrence Church and St. Louis Church) within the city of West Haven. If you have been accustomed to attending the 4:00 PM English Saturday Vigil Mass in St. Louis, prayerfully consider attending the 4:00 PM English Saturday Vigil Mass in St. Lawrence. If accustomed to attending the 8:00 AM or 10:30 AM English Mass in St. Lawrence on Sundays, prayerfully consider attending the 9:00 AM English Mass in St. Louis. The same parish priests and liturgical musicians will be alternating each weekend to celebrate the Masses on the weekend and Holy Days. If you served as a Lector, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, or Usher, etc. within our parish at a Mass time that was offered in St. Lawrence or St. Louis previously, I invite you to contact the parish office (203) 934-5249 so that we can place you in the schedule for any Mass in St. Lawrence or St. Louis. With respect to the weekday Masses, while the schedule will remain for now, I am re-evaluating it and will seek your consultation in the future with a survey via Flocknote and the bulletin to get our parishioners input. With the declining number of active priests serving in our Archdiocese, I pray that you understand that I am making every attempt possible to ensure that I am fair and equal in establishing this Mass Schedule within our one parish based on need. It would be impossible for me to establish a Mass schedule to satisfy what is convenient for each parishioner. But as stated before, if there is a need that arises due to the attendance I will definitely re-evaluate the weekend Mass schedule to add another Mass. As we celebrate the great Solemnity of Pentecost, one of St. John XXIII’s favorite, let us pray that the Holy Spirit will enkindle in us the fire of love and renew each of us in our journey together as disciples of the Lord in our one parish community from this life unto life eternal!
