“Make musical voyages. Attempt them. There’s nothing else.” – Tennessee Williams The Diller-Quaile School of Music Congratulations History to

The Diller-Quaile School of Music was founded in 1920 by pianists Angela Diller and Elizabeth Quaile. Since the School’s founders believed that the capacity for understanding and creating music exists in everyone, it was essential that their music school provide a dynamic and well-rounded experience not just for select students, but for all. Together, they initiated a comprehensive approach to teaching music, correlating individual piano lessons with classes in musicianship and theory. Their Russell Granet purpose was to develop musically sensitive and receptive individuals who played with the eloquence that comes from understanding the structure of music and the inner relationships of musical elements within a composition. Through inspired teaching, they would awaken in students a responsiveness to the beauty of music and to the subtleties of artistic performance.

The first teachers at the School were selected from among the two founders’ adult pupils. As the School grew, so did the need for more teachers, and formal teacher training courses evolved. In addition to developing materials for teachers, Angela You have inspired Diller and Elizabeth Quaile collaborated to write the well-known Diller-Quaile Series, starting with the First Solo Book and First Duet Book, published in 1918. Overall, their publications consisted of piano materials for beginners; four levels of solo books; and enriched duet books; pedal studies; the First Theory Book covering the elements of music with a particular focus on ear-training; four levels of keyboard harmony texts; opera stories re-told for young people, with narratives and easy piano arrangements; and additional materials developed with Kate Stearns Page, including A Pre-School Music the lives of so many... Rug Concerts For Young Children and Their Families For 25 years, New York City families have enjoyed these fun and engaging concerts for young children. Each monthly series is different and features performers who introduce a wide variety of instruments and music of diverse periods. Singing, movement, and opportunities to play rhythm instruments are always a part of each interactive 45-minute concert. Join us! Master Classes Diller-Quaile presents master classes each academic year. Some are performance-based, with a mix of student and faculty participants, and others are presented in lecture or workshop formats. Guest artists have included musicians such as Seymour Bernstein, Carter Brey, Glenn Dicterow, James Ehnes, David Finckel, Pamela Frank, Wu Han, Colin Jacobsen, Ida Kavafian, Joan Kwuon, Cho-Liang Lin, Ruggiero Ricci, Paula Robison, Astrid Schween, Paul Sheftel, Arnold Steinhardt, and the Attacca Quartet. Faculty Concerts Throughout the school year, Diller-Quaile hosts a series of concerts highlighting the outstanding musicians that comprise its faculty and staff. Each year there are solo recitals and group faculty concerts along with concerts given by the School’s ensembles-in-residence: the Diller-Quaile String Quartet and VocePiano. These concerts are open to all and admission is free of charge. A reception, sponsored by the Parents Association, follows each performance.
