Toward a Definition of Sixteenth - Century habaptism: Twentieth - Century Historiography of the Radical Reformation James R. Coggins Winnipeg "To define the essence is to shape it afresh." - Ernst Troeltsch Twentieth-century Anabaptist historiography has somewhat of the character of Hegelian philosophy, consisting of an already established Protestant-Marxist thesis, a Mennonite antithesis and a recent synthesis. The debate has centred on three major and related issues: geographic origin, intellectual sources, and essence. Complicating these issues has been confusion over the matter of categorization: Just who is to be included among the Anabaptists and who should be assigned to other groups? Indeed, what are the appropriate categories, or groups, in the sixteenth century? This paper will attempt to unravel some of the tangled debate that has gone on concerning these issues. The Protestant interpretation of Anabaptism has the longest aca- demic tradition, going back to the sixteenth century. Developed by such Protestant theologians and churchmen as Bullinger, Melanchthon, Men- ius, Rhegius and Luther who wrote works defining and attacking Ana- baptism, this interpretation arose out of the Protestant understanding of the church. Sixteenth-century Protestants believed in a single universal church corrupted by the Roman Catholic papacy but reformed by them- selves. For convenience all of these "others" were labelled "Anabaptists." Protestants saw the Anabaptists as originating in Saxony with Thomas Muntzer and the Zwickau prophets in 1521 and spreading in subsequent years to Switzerland and other parts of northern Europe. -

Gross, Doctor of Philosophy, 1994 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Howard Serwer, Professor of Music, Musicology Department, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland As part of an effort to maintain their German culture, the late eighteenth-century Mennonites of Eastern Pennsylvania instituted hymn-singing instruction in the elementary community schoolhouse curriculum. Beginning in 1780 (or perhaps earlier), much of the hymn-tune repertoire, previously an oral tradition, was recorded in musical notation in manuscript songbooks (Notenbüchlein) compiled by local schoolmasters in Mennonite communities north of Philadelphia. The practice of giving manuscript songbooks to diligent singing students continued until 1835 or later. These manuscript songbooks are the only extant clue to the hymn repertoire and performance practice of these Mennonite communities at the turn of the nineteenth century. By identifying the tunes that recur most frequently, one can determine the core repertoire of the Franconia Mennonites at this time, a repertoire that, on balance, is strongly pietistic in nature. Musically, the Notenbüchlein document the shift that occured when these Mennonite communities incorporated written transmission into their oral tradition. -

Byram Professor Anna Grotans Copyright by Ursula Berit Jany 2013 Abstract Anabaptism, a radical reform movement originating during the sixteenth-century European Reformation, sought to attain discipleship to Christ by a separation from the religious and worldly powers of early modern society. In my critical reading of the movement’s representations in German fiction dating from the seventeenth to the twentieth century, I explore how authors have fictionalized the religious minority, its commitment to particular theological and ethical aspects, its separation from society, and its experience of persecution. As part of my analysis, I trace the early historical development of the group and take inventory of its chief characteristics to observe which of these aspects are selected for portrayal in fictional texts. Within this research framework, my study investigates which social and religious principles drawn from historical accounts and sources influence the minority’s image as an ideal society, on the one hand, and its stigmatization as a heretical and seditious sect, on the other. As a result of this analysis, my study reveals authors’ underlying programmatic aims and ideological convictions cloaked by their literary articulations of conflict-laden encounters between society and the religious minority. -

Ideological Continuity from the Protestant Reformation to the German Peasants’ War, 1517-1526
THE RADICAL GOSPEL: IDEOLOGICAL CONTINUITY FROM THE PROTESTANT REFORMATION TO THE GERMAN PEASANTS’ WAR, 1517-1526 Cassandra McMurry History 200: Doing History Professor Katherine Smith December 15 2014 1 The rhetoric of the Protestant Reformation, while advocating a new conception of piety and worship that flew in the face of traditional Catholic doctrine, also shaped a new conception of a social group often considered apolitical, simplistic, and passive: the peasantry. To help garner support for their cause, beginning in 1520 Reformation adherents (Reformers) began to represent the peasantry with a fictional peasant they named Karsthans, who frequently appeared in distributed woodcuts as part of Reformation propaganda. Karsthans is commonly depicted standing at the literal center of religious change—at the side of Martin Luther himself—as a powerful and devoted peasant soldier, wielding a flail to defend the word of God.1 Scholars such as R. W. Scriber have termed this new understanding of the peasants’ role in Reform the birth of the ‘Evangelical Peasant’ as a “presiding guardian” over the new religious rhetoric of the Protestant Reformation.2 The Reformers aimed to dismantle the power of the Catholic hierarchical system by advocating that the faithful make direct contact with God rather than going through a priest by means of confession, an egalitarian doctrine based on their new interpretation of the Bible. These theologians imagined that the political impetus of their challenge to hegemonic Catholic tradition would come from the lowest orders of society, the common man was thought to be “closer to God” and therefore distinctly qualified to lead a Protestant movement to defend Scripture.3 In late 1524 and early 1525 the peasants of the region which is now Germany, Austria, and Switzerland rose against their lords, demanding changes to social and political institutions such as the church and the lord-vassal relationship, as well as advocating community governance. -

CHAPTER ONE THE THEOLOGICAL CRITIQUE OF ENTHUSIASM In this chapter I shall try to delineate some of the ways in which Protestant theological discourse from the Reformation and up to the middle of the seventeenth century dealt with the phenomenon of enthusiasm. How was the term understood by Lutheran and Re formed theologians? What kind of challenge did enthusiasm consti tute to the established Church? What were the responses given to that challenge, and in what ways was enthusiasm de-legitimized? Fi nally, how did the opponents of enthusiasm account for the prophe cies, ecstasies and convulsions of the enthusiasts? The topic of course is vast and here I can only outline some central characteristics of that discourse, by analysing several selected texts. This analysis, which by no means attempts to be exhaustive, may serve as a background against which developments in the reaction to enthusiasm during the seventeenth and early eighteenth century can be appreciated. The Protestant critique of enthusiasm, of claims to the gift of prophecy and to direct divine inspiration, started almost from the beginning of the Reformation itself, with the appearance of the "Zwickau prophets" in Wittenberg in late December 1521, and with Luther's attack on them in 1522, and his subsequent debates with Andreas Carlstadt and Thomas Müntzer. Luther, however, used the term "Schwärmer" with respect to these prophets, rather than "en thusiasts".1 While focusing mostly on the erroneous doctrines of the 1 Luther coined the term "Schwärmer" (taken from the designation for swarm ing, stirred-up bees), for the Zwickau prophets—Nicholas Storch, Thomas Drechsel and Marcus Thomas Stübner, and their followers—as well as Müntzer and Carlstadt. -

Andrew Hoffecker The purpose of the course is to study Christian church history from the Protestant Reformation to the present. The course will be multifaceted and will include: the development of Christian theology such as the theologies of Luther, Calvin, Schleiermacher, and Barth; the institutional church; various views of the religious life including pietism and Puritanism; and prominent movements (e.g., Protestant scholasticism, modern liberalism and Neo Orthodoxy) and individuals who inspired them. Our aim, therefore, is not to limit our study to “church history” alone, but always as it is related to other fields in the history of Christian thought and the larger culture. By surveying diverse but related subjects, students will gain an overall historical perspective of the Church – its theology, institutions, and leaders during the last five centuries. Throughout our study the advantages of an integrated perspective will be stressed. The major benefits of this approach will be an increased appreciation of God's providential work throughout its history and insights into important issues of our own era. A principal interest will be to understand how people and ideas influenced the church of the past, and how they still affect contemporary events. COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1. TEXTS: The following texts are required for the course: Justo Gonzalez, The Story of Christianity: Vol 2 The Reformation to the Present Day; Hugh T. Kerr, Readings in Christian Thought. Students will read Gonzalez in its entirety; Kerr, pages 136-403. Students will also complete additional pages of reading which will be reported on the day of the final exam on the “READING REPORT FOR HT504” attached to this syllabus. -

N APRIL 18, 1520, a lowly monk stood before the emperor and princes of Germany in the city of Worms. He had been Ocalled before this august gathering to answer charges of heresy, charges that could threaten his very life. The monk was confronted with a pile of his books and asked if he wished to defend them all or reject a part. Courageously, Martin Luther defended them all and asked to be shown where any part was in error on the basis of “Scripture and plain rea- son.” The emperor was outraged by Luther’s response and made his own position clear the next day: “Not only I, but you of this noble Ger- man nation, would be forever disgraced if by our negligence not only heresy but the very suspicion of heresy were to survive. -

German Reformation Martin Luther (1483-1546) • Famous 95 Thesis was against sale of indulgences. • Rejected sacramentalism. Affirmed forensic justification (salvation is an act of faith). • Rejected auricular confession (confession to a priest), saying that biblically people are supposed to confess to their fellow brothers. • Rejected authority of the pope. He went so far as to say that the primary problem with the RCC is the pope’s desire for opulence and luxury • Rejected all sacraments except two: baptism and the Lord’s Supper. • Rejected ordination of priests (idea of priestly class). • Followers known as Lutherans #2. Swiss Reformation John Calvin (1509-1564) • Was 8 years old when Luther nailed Ninety-Five Thesis to door. • Followers developed “Reformed theology” and “Calvinism” (Theodore Beza, John Knox). • People used to say they were of the “Reformed faith.” Around 20th c. started saying “Calvinists.” • Helped transform Geneva into “Protestant Rome.” Ulrich Zwingli (1484-1531) • Had academic background. • Brought reformation to hometown of Zurich, Switzerland. 1 • Calvary Chapels hold his view of Lord’s supper (memorialism—it’s purely symbolic tool for remembering Jesus’ work on cross). • Held to infant baptism (brings into Covenant Community like circumcision). #3. Radical Reformation Anabaptists (1527-) • Anabaptist = “baptized again” (adults should get baptized again even if done as infant). • “Radical” because wanted to take reformation even further. • Rejected infant baptism, link between church and state, Christian participant in war, distrusted external authority; held common ownership of property; emphasized pacifism and non-resistance.
