SAVE WATER

QUESTION: How can you avoid a high water bill? ANSWER: By using less than 16 kilolitres per month (that is 500 litres per day)

Due to the critical drought we are currently experiencing, Level 5 water restrictions are now being enforced in the Drakenstein area. This means each person should not use more than a maximum of 87 litres of water per day. Punitive tariffs will kick in when water use over a billing period exceeds 16 units of water per month.

The following tariffs are now being applied in terms of domestic water use:

Monthly con- sumption: Water tariff per Water units in consumed unit kilolitres (Rand) (1 000 litres) 0 -6 Free 7-10 R4.66 11 - 15 R15.54 16 - 30 R72.00 31 - 50 R106.73 HIGH WATER BILL PUNITIVE TARIFFS APPLY 51 - 80 R216.58 Above 80 .28

It is important to note that 1 000 litres of water represent one kilolitre or one unit of water on your monthly municipal account.

If your water use is over 16 kilolitres per month (or 500 litres per day), you enter the red zone and will be charged a substantial amount of money: R72.00 per kilolitre, as opposed to R15.54 per kilolitre.

Stay clear of the red zone and make sure you consume less than 500 litres of water per day. A helpful benchmark is to use under 87 litres per person per day.

Where there are more than one dwelling on an erf or area - such as group houses, security complexes, flats or granny flats – and there is only one consumer account, the consumer’s water use will be based on a sliding scale for the number of dwellings involved. For example, a consumer account for five dwellings on a property will be billed by dividing the total water use for the month by five. For this measure to be implemented, home owner associations and property owners should lodge an application at the municipal offices.

Read your meter every day, ensure you save water and use less than 500 litres per day.

Assist Drakenstein Municipality in saving water.
