AUCKLAND CAR CLUB ERIC MALLARD ATTENTION THE PADDOCK E.G. Mallard It was very sad news indeed to hear of the passing of our old friend Eric Mallard back in April. Eric was a true friend to motorsport in general and known by many within the sport here and abroad. He rubbed shoulders with most of the great Grand Prix racers of yesteryear in a career that spanned over 60 years. I write this though from an Auckland Car Club perspective as it was at our Club that he dedicated a large slice of his time and effort. Eric along with others of his generation were responsible for the purchase of our clubrooms at Stoddard Road making the Club essentially what it is today and for this we will always be grateful. Eric was extremely well respected within New Zealand Motorsport and certainly held in the highest regard by past and current Auckland Car Club members. His guidance had been sought by the Executive Committee even in the most recent of times and the knowledge that he had accumulated from a lifetime of dedication to our sport was humbling. Personally, I felt privileged to call Eric my friend and he was certainly a mentor to me on many levels. We would speak often about the past and present state of the sport and the people within it that have made and continue to make a difference…and just a few for the wrong reasons he would hint in his own colourful way. I would say that some of Eric’s influence has certainly washed off on me as I seem to have humbly followed a little in his footsteps. Aside from friendship, the most valuable thing that Eric supplied to us all on a regular basis was his intimate knowledge and experience of motorsport…it gave him an aura if you like. For his services to the sport Eric was awarded the MotorSport New Zealand Award of Merit in 1981, the New Zealand Order of Merit in 1989 and in 2014 was presented the MotorSport New Zealand Member D’Honneur. In 2015 he was the very first person to be inducted onto the Auckland Car Club Roll of Honour. Not long after the Pukekohe Circuit was opened in 1963, Eric was appointed General Manager of New Zealand International Grand Prix, a position he held until recent retirement. Following closure and sale of the NZIGP office building in Ellerslie, Eric became custodian of the country’s most prestigious motorsport trophy – the New Zealand Motor Cup. Eric held many roles within the sport over the years. He was President of the Auckland Car Club from 1963 to 1968 and sat on the Motorsport New Zealand Executive for a period of five years. He was an “A” Grade Clerk of the Course, a Competitor Relations Officer and Licence Examiner. He was also Rally Manager for the Rally of New Zealand for six years. He was involved heavily with NZ Formula Ford and in most recent times he was the face of NZIGP, writing supplementary regulations and organising race meetings, including Auckland Car Club events. It was in this latter role that I got to know Eric best and where our friendship formed into one that lasted the rest of his years. I am one among many that will miss him greatly. Brett Davy. We are deeply saddened to hear the news that motorsport stalwart, Eric Mallard, passed away peacefully over the weekend. Eric Mallard’s involvement with motorsport began in 1953 as a marshal at Ardmore and continued for over 60 years. He was a familiar face at many motorsport events around the country and was a valued member of our community. He was always willing to lend a hand and pass on his vast knowledge which undoubtedly helped the sport flourish at all levels for decades. Eric held many important roles within motorsport including “A” Clerk of Course, Competitor Relations Officer and Licence Examiner. He also had an extremely active role within the Formula Ford Association and also the Formula Ford Championship, and most recently, the New Zealand International Grand Prix (NZIGP). He was also a member of the MotorSport New Zealand Executive from 1968 to 1973. His other accolades included – 1981 – MotorSport New Zealand – Award of Merit 1999 – New Zealand Order of Merit (M.N.Z.M.) – For services to motorsport. 2014 – MotorSport New Zealand – Member D’Honneur “Eric was definitely one of the most committed and dedicated servants the sport has had. His passion and knowledge for motorsport was simply incredible and our sport is richer for his years of hard work,” said Wayne Christie – MotorSport New Zealand President. “He will be sorely missed and everyone at MotorSport New Zealand sends their sincerest condolences to his family, friends and all those who knew him at this difficult time.” Vale Eric Mallard, by Josh Revell, April 6, 2020 Eric Mallard was a legend within the motor racing community, having traded stories with Possum Bourne and rubbed shoulders with Sir Stirling Moss.

The calendar has been finalised and the tracks booked and HRC are just waiting to finalise with the classes what events they wish to run at before we announce the full list of classes running at each event. Some events are already full with eleven classes which is really the limit we can run at a two day meeting. Some interesting projects coming up including a possible new motoring TV show (f we can get support) and a rerun of the B & H 500. HRC are endeavouring to run Classic meetings and Mixed Meetings as separate events with the classic meetings with older cars and hopefully cars with COD’s. Unfortunately for commercial reasons we have to have some non-classic classes at these meeting to make them viable. The classic meetings are the Icebreaker 28/29th September Hampton Downs, Tasman Revival Hampton Downs 25/26th January, Tasman Revival Pukekohe 22/23rd February, Paul Fahey NZ Legends of Speed 21/22nd March Hampton Downs, Jack Nazer Classic Taupo 25/26th April. At these we will run BMW classes and ERC and while COD’s for these classes are not mandatory the cars competing in most cases could get COD’s. Race meeting organisers do need classes to combine as entry fees cannot keep rising.

The B40 was Chevron's design for the 1977 F2 season and was a tidied up and improved version of the B35. It was a front runner in the European Championship and very competitive with its rivals: the March 772, Martini MK22 and the Ralt RT1. Although the B40 only won twice, Rosberg at Enna and Leoni in the Ferrari-engined chassis at Misano, it was competitive everywhere as five second places showed. Only 11 examples were build with the engines of choice - apart from the aforementioned Ferrari engine - being both the Hart 420R and BMW M12/7. B40-77-05 was one of the 3 Fred Opert Racing Team cars entered in the 1977 European Formula 2 Championship. The Team cars were chassis #05, #06 and #08.Chassis #06 was mostly raced by Keke Rosberg (SF) but also Alex Ribeiro (BR), Arturo Merzario (I), Eje Elgh (S); chassis #08 was "the Guest Car" raced by Jacques Laffite (FR), Gregg Young (USA), Alan Jones (AUS), Maurizio Flammini (I), Keke Rosberg (SF) and Tiff Needell (GB). Our car, chassis #05 was raced extensively by Hugh "Wink" Bancroft, an American whose budget subsidized the star drivers. After having been fully rebuild in 2003 by ex-Chevron employee Vin Malkie for then owner Mike Sidgwick, the car then passed through the hands of 3 more UK owners before it was bought by the current owner in 2012.

ACES WILD ACES WILD The Story of the British Grand Prix THE STORY OF THE Peter Miller Motor racing is one of the most 10. 3. BRITISH GRAND PRIX exacting and dangerous sports in the world today. And Grand Prix racing for Formula 1 single-seater cars is the RIX GREATS toughest of them all. The ultimate ambition of every racing driver since 1950, when the com petition was first introduced, has been to be crowned as 'World Cham pion'. In this, his fourth book, author Peter Miller looks into the back ground of just one of the annual qualifying rounds-the British Grand Prix-which go to make up the elusive title. Although by no means the oldest motor race on the English sporting calendar, the British Grand Prix has become recognised as an epic and invariably dramatic event, since its inception at Silverstone, Northants, on October 2nd, 1948. Since gaining World Championship status in May, 1950 — it was in fact the very first event in the Drivers' Championships of the W orld-this race has captured the interest not only of racing enthusiasts, LOONS but also of the man in the street. It has been said that the supreme test of the courage, skill and virtuosity of a Grand Prix driver is to w in the Monaco Grand Prix through the narrow streets of Monte Carlo and the German Grand Prix at the notorious Nürburgring. Both of these gruelling circuits cer tainly stretch a driver's reflexes to the limit and the winner of these classic events is assured of his rightful place in racing history.

2016 MEDIA GUIDE Toyota Racing Series: TOP INTERNATIONALS CHALLENGE LEADING KIWI DRIVERS New Zealand’s premier single-seater championship has once more attracted a top field of international drivers to this country to do battle with New Zealand drivers for the most prestigious trophies in New Zealand motor racing. The championship, now in its 12th season, and in the second season for the new FT50 race car, the series was established to help young New Zealanders to advance their racing careers by giving them experience in modern composite-based ‘wings and slicks’ race cars. It has launched Kiwis into international racing careers. New Zealand graduates of the series include 2015 FIA World Endurance Champion Brendon Hartley, Le Mans 24-Hour race winner Earl Bamber, GP2 racers Mitch Evans and Richie Stanaway, Japanese Formula Three champion Nick Cassidy, Chinese Formula Masters champion James Munro, Porsche Carrera Cup Asia champion Chris van der Drift and V8 Supercars driver Shane van Gisbergen. This year three Kiwis are racing – James Munro (Christchurch), 2015 national Formula Ford champion Taylor Cockerton (Pukekohe) and 2015 Spirit of a Nation TRS feature race winner Brendon Leitch. Munro is having his third shot at winning the TRS championship as is Leitch, while it is Cockerton’s first year in the top category. The international talent they will race against is considerable. Brazilian 17-year-old Pedro Piquet, son of three-time world Formula One champion Nelson (1981, 1983, 1987), is returning to the TRS after contesting the opening rounds in 2014. In the intervening period he has won the Brazilian Formula Three Championship for the last two years and will be using the TRS series as a springboard into the FIA European Formula Three Championship where he will team up with British driver and 2015 TRS graduate Callum Ilott at Van Amersfoort racing.

B Manawatu Car Club Inc MAGAZINE MAY 2019 Something for Everyone Page 1 of 39 EDITORSPEAK… Email Trevor at [email protected] The milking ewes have been having a holiday from the daily grind for almost a month now (and consequently so have I, sort of!!) - the dry had really started to bite us and the pasture quality was on a seemingly never ending decline, so it made sense to dry them off early this year. Fortunately we still have a good reserve of frozen milk so the supply of yummy yoghurt and incredible ice cream can continue for a while yet..... So, I hear you say, how did the season go?? No?? Well I will tell you anyway. As I have previously mentioned, the addition of some newbies to the milkers could have spelt trouble, but they just took it in their stride and went along with what the old hands did. Sheep nuts and maize, a muesli breakfast for the ovine connoisseur. Proof that food IS indeed a wonderful bribe. So wonderful in fact that after being milked, the old biddies would clean up any spillage from under the buckets of those still on the platform, check to make sure they couldn’t get in to the holding pen to go around for a second time, then check to see if they could get into the BIG feed bin, because if I ever forgot to replace the lid, well, that was it.... heaven!! Ever tried to remove 4 or 5 heads from a rubbish bin full of feed to get the lid back on?? Believe me it’s easier said than done!! More than a few times I would start the clean-up and wash down procedures to find ewes coming back up the off ramp, just in case there might, just might, be anything left in the nibbles buckets!! And I daren’t be late to milking or the whole neighbourhood would know by the plaintive bleating emanating from the paddock.
