On Broseley Beat By Police Community Support Officer Malcolm Goddard Spring will soon be with us and we will see the days getting longer. Anti-social behaviour can see an increase at this time. The team are aware of a series of anti-social incidents in the Haycop and dark Lane and are working with the Council and others to try and address it. If you become a victim of anti-social behaviour please report it online on the West Mercia Website https://www.westmercia.police.uk/ro/report/asb/af/antisocial-behaviour/ with the details of the problem. We may not always be able to send officers to speak to you as there may be other incidents occurring that take priority. But if you don’t make the report, the Officers in the Safer Neighbourhood Team won’t know the anti-social behaviour has taken place and can’t try and tackle the problem by targeting any areas affected. At this time of year the Police see an increase in reports of burglaries of shed and outbuildings, with power tools, garden tools, bicycles and other items being stolen. So many people get a lot of enjoyment out of being able to use this valuable asset for the community, which is privately owned. VANDALISM It makes us all very sad to have to report that for the last 10 months we have had to deal with constant vandalism. The recently erected bird hide is suffering daily abuse - Christmas Eve one of the re-enforced concrete panels was kicked out - door fittings & locks have been smashed - shutters broken - graffiti - piles of plastic waste(including empty drug sachets) inside & out. Three of the recently installed new benches have been removed into the bird hide and fires are being lit inside.

Here are the 3 Winners of January’s Quarterly Competition. Topic was entitled ‘Personal Projects’ New Red Church Group To Restore Churchyard 1st Place - ‘Hammer and Tongs’ by Joan Banks In 1767, St Mary’s Church, known as the Red Church due to the colour of its bricks, was built because St Leonard’s Church in Broseley couldn’t cope with the rapidly increasing population attracted by work in coal, iron and clay mining and manufacturing in the earliest days of the industrial revolution. Apart from the ghost stories, there’s an air of mystery about the Church. It was funded by a bequest from a Mary Brown but no copies of the original documents nor of her Will can be found. There’s also no sign of any Memorial to that lady. The Church was also known as the Francis Turner Blithe Memorial Church, as he eventually inherited Mary’s estate and completed the building. He did a grand job, inside and out, the Church was magnificent in a stunning location on a ridge, but it suffered early in its history by subsidence as it was erected on previously-mined land. Deliberate undermining caused further damage in the 1870s and the Church was used only intermittently with the last service held there in the 1930s. The old church and graveyard suffered vandalism in the 1950s and it was declared unsafe and demolished in 1961. Debris scattered over the site failed to protect most of the memorial headstones and most are broken or incomplete. The site is overgrown with tree roots disturbing the graves. The neglect of the 3rd Place - Churchyard is almost unbelievable. After two ‘Beam me up Scottie’ years of negotiation, a properly constituted 2nd Place - ‘44AD’ by Sophie Harris by Joan Banks volunteer group has now been allowed to restore the sadly neglected Churchyard, the Our February meeting took place with two or three members missing due to the flooding in the area, “Friends of the Red Church.” The site is being however we welcome two prospective members. We had a very interesting talk on Judging cleared of invasive vegetation and we’ll Photographic Competitions, by Ian Ralston, who is one of our keen members. This was followed on establish the ecology of the site. by a talk on Macro Photography, kit needed and looking at some examples. After two years of negotiation, a properly constituted volunteer group has now been allowed to restore Here are the 3 Winners of February’s Quarterly Competition. Topic was entitled ‘Winter’ the sadly neglected Churchyard, the “Friends of the Red Church.” The site is being cleared of invasive 1st Place (Right) - ‘The Cutting Edge’ by Joan Banks vegetation and we’ll establish the ecology of the site. We’ll find out if more memorials survived the demolition and collect stories about those people buried at site and events that shaped their lives – what stories do you know? Among the 1250 persons who have made the graveyard their last resting place are watermen, miners, brickmakers, iron workers and painters for the tile and porcelain industries. They rest alongside major industrialists. Follow our progress on facebook - “Friends of the Red Church” and find more details on our website www.broseley.org,uk/redchurch/ Any donations to help this project would be very welcome. Exciting Year at Benthall Hall For the first time they will be sharing the story of how the second World War affected Benthall Hall, with a trail that explores themes from how the Hall was used as a boy's school, and how artist Michael Benthall was involved in the D-Day landings. There will be hands-on activities for children and new events like outdoor theatre and orchid walks. With extra opening days this year they are desperate for enthusiastic story-tellers to chat with our visitors - if you love to chat and bring history to life then this might be the role for you. Plenty of training is provided! Or are you most at home in the outdoors? The magnificent gardens of Benthall Hall need more helpers to keep the roses looking lovely and to keep up the tradition started by resident botanist George Maw many years ago of keeping a diverse and spectacular array of plants for visitors to enjoy and support garden wildlife. We'd also love volunteers to lead people around the gardens and show off this little-known gem. On top of all that, there's now the new opportunity to get hands-on with the historical collection and learn how to look after the variety of beautiful objects and furniture in our care. Get behind the scenes with expert staff 3rd Place - ‘Winters Fangs’ to learn how we conserve these treasures and help us to make Benthall Hall look it's best every day 2nd Place - ‘Crystallised Fruit’ by Joan Banks by Ian Ralston for the thousands of visitors we welcome each year. 23 ADVERTS FROM JUST 1/8 PAGE £20.00, 1/4 PAGE £35.96, 1/2 PAGE £50.36, FULL PAGE £67.96 - ALL+VAT RING 07772 999568 NOW TO BOOK YOUR ADVERT.
