  • ITV Statement of Programme Policy 2020
STATEMENT OF PROGRAMME POLICY 2020 INCLUDING THE ANNUAL REVIEW OF 2019 ITV REVIEW OF 2019 Overall Strategy and themes for the year In 2019, ITV set out to ensure that high quality, original UK content production lay at the heart of our strategy. New, UK-originated programmes are what viewers expect to see on ITV and we were able to meet these expectations, providing a point of distinction in a market increasingly crowded with imports and repeats. ITV also continued to build on our More Than TV Strategy, which launched in 2018, repositioning the ITV brand, developing our data and digital capabilities, expanding our direct to consumer activities. ITV’s Strategy is that ITV will be more than TV – it will be a structurally sound integrated producer broadcaster where our ambition is to maintain total viewing and increase total advertising revenue; it will be a growing and profitable content business, which drives returns; and it will create value by developing and nurturing strong direct consumer relationships, where people want to spend money on a range of content and experiences with a really trusted brand. Our programmes will underpin this. The ITV schedule for 2019 demonstrated our commitment to high quality, well- produced programmes in a full range of genres that, taken together, provided something for everyone. The large majority of programmes shown on ITV were brand new to screen, made in the UK for the UK audience. ITV main channel is the home of high-quality commissions in a wide range of genres – from drama and entertainment to factual, current affairs, major sport and news.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by University of East Anglia digital repository CST 11.2 | HAMAD | 1 Contemporary Medical Television and Crisis in the NHS Hannah Hamad University of East Anglia, UK Abstract This article maps the terrain of contemporary UK medical television, paying particular attention to Call the Midwife as its centrepiece, and situating it in contextual relation to the current crisis in the NHS. It provides a historical overview of UK and US medical television, illustrating how medical television today has been shaped by noteworthy antecedents. It argues that crisis rhetoric surrounding healthcare leading up to the passing of the Health and Social Care Act 2012 has been accompanied by a renaissance in medical television. And that issues, strands and clusters have emerged in forms, registers and modes with noticeable regularity, especially around the value of affective labour, the cultural politics of nostalgia and the neoliberalisation of healthcare. Keywords medical television; NHS; nurses; affective labour; nostalgia In a 2015 press release, the BBC announced, several weeks before the fifth series began in January 2016, that nursing and medical drama Call the Midwife [CTM] (2012-) would return for a sixth series in 2017 (BBC Media Centre 2015). This confidence was not misplaced. Since it began in 2012, CTM has regularly reached audiences of 10 million plus (BBC Media Centre 2015). While prestige medical television like CTM continues to draw huge audiences, junior doctors in the United CST 11.2 | HAMAD | 2 Kingdom are intermittently staging strikes in protest against new contracts being forced on them by the Tory government Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt that will change the terms and conditions of their employment within the National Health Service (NHS).

  • Continuing ITV's Digital Transformation
Continuing ITV’s Digital Transformation Interim results for the period ending 30 June 2019 Carolyn McCall, ITV Chief Executive, said: “ITV delivered another good viewing performance in the first half of the year. Online revenues grew strongly up 18% despite tough comparatives, with Love Island providing a strong finish to the half. This was reflected in better than expected total advertising revenue. “The economic and political environment remains uncertain but we are very focused on delivering our strategy and creating a stronger, more diversified and structurally sound business to enable ITV to take advantage of evolving viewing and advertising opportunities. “We are making good progress in each area of our strategy as we become an increasingly digital entertainment company. BritBox is set to launch in Q4, as is our new programmatic addressable advertising platform, and we are accelerating our digital and data capabilities. “ITV Studios has a solid pipeline of new and returning shows this year – from I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! to World on Fire to Snowpiercer – and is firmly on track to deliver our full year guidance. “We continue to deliver strongly on our cost savings where we are targeting, in addition to the original £35m to £40m, a further £5m this year and £15m between 2020 to 2022, totalling £55m to £60m over 2019 to 2022. “We have a solid balance sheet which enables us to make the right decisions to build a robust and growing business and deliver returns to shareholders in line with our guidance.” H1 modestly better than expected • Total external revenue down 7% at £1,476 million (2018: £1,593 million) • ITV total advertising revenue down 5%, better than previously guided • Strong growth in online revenue, up 18%, against tough comparatives • Total ITV Studios revenue down 6% at £758 million (2018: £803 million) as expected, with deliveries weighted to the second half.
