Mississippi Music Teacher Collegiate Competitions 2016 Welcome

Welcome to the 2017 Mississippi Music Teachers Association Collegiate Competitions! I hope you enjoy your visit to Jackson today.

As you know, participation in competitions plays an important part in the life of a developing musician. I hope your experience today will inspire and inform you in many ways.

The Millsaps faculty, staff, and students graciously hosted this competition and allowed MMTA to use their facilities. A special note of appreciation is in order for Rachel Heard, our Millsaps liaison. Also, Phyllis Lewis-Hale, VP for Collegiate and National Competitions, coordinated this competition and is to be congratulated for her work. In addition, Stephanie Holmes, VP for Public Relations, Alice Ballard created this program booklet. Many dedicated people worked together to make this event possible. Thanks to one and all!

MMTA COMPETITION JUDGES

Francis Yang is Associate Professor Piano at Northwestern State University of Louisiana. Prior to his appointment at Northwestern State, Dr.Yang served for four years as professor and director of piano studies at the Universidad de Cuenca, in Cuenca, Ecuador. Yang also taught at the Université de Montréal, the University of Ottawa, and the University of Alberta as adjunct professor and teaching assistant.

Yang has concertized in many cities such as , , Montreal, Vancouver, Buenos Aires, Quito, and Montevideo. Performances Francis Yang include the 37th International Festival Encuentros in Buenos Aires, a lecture recital at London's Royal Academy of Music, and the VIII Bienal of Contemporary Music in Cuenca, Ecuador. Performances with orchestra include the Orquesta Sinfónica de Cuenca, and the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony. He has participated and played in numerous music festivals including the Mozarteum Sommerakademie,(Salzburg, Austria), the Orford Music Festival, (Magog, Quebec), the Gulbenkian International Music Festival, (, ), and the March International Music Days Festival, (Ruse, Bulgaria). Active as a teacher, Yang has given masterclasses in Ecuador, Argentina, Singapore, Canada and the U.S.A. He has been invited to serve as adjudicator for competitions both nationally and internationally, including the Ars Nova International Piano Competition (Singapore), and as preliminary juror for the Louisiana International Piano Competition and the Seattle International Piano Competition.

Yang received his doctorate from the Université de Montréal, his Master's of Music from the University of and his Bachelor's of Music from the University of Michigan. His teachers include Stéphane Lemelin, Richard Angeletti, Sequeira Costa, Gary Amano and Robert Rogers.

Dr. Jeff Kensmoe is the Director of Opera and Professor of Voice at Birmingham-Southern College. Dr. Kensmoe has had an extensive performance career singing in opera and musical theatre productions throughout the United States and around the world. Some of his work includes Einstein on the Beach, Killer of Enemies, The Magic Flute, Hänsel and Gretel, The Secret Marriage, The Ballad of Baby Doe, Trial By Jury, Street Scene, Camelot, Sayonara, She Loves Me, Phantom, The American Phantom, Phantom of the Opera, I Do, I Do, and Bending Toward the Light: A Jazz Nativity. He has been a bass-baritone soloist in Masses and oratorios across the United States, including Bloch’s Sacred Service, Stravinsky’s Les Noce, Brahm’s A German Requiem, Fauré’s Requiem, Mozart’s Requiem, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Schubert’s Mass in G and Mass in E Flat and Handel’s Messiah. He has appeared on television in the Sondhiem Gala at Carnegie Jeff Kensmoe Hall on PBS, the Guiding Light on CBS and has been a guest artist at the New Zealand and former West German Embassies. Dr. Kensmoe is currently the Vice President of the Alabama chapter of NATS, and holds a Doctor of Arts degree from the University of Northern Colorado.
