A man named Charles Chiniquy, was a contemporary of DL Moody and later became a friend of DL Moody and of Abraham Lincoln. Chiniquy was a Vatican “priest” for 50 years, but turned against the Vatican after the start of the USA Civil War. Chiniquy kept clashing against the leadership until God helped him to finally see that he needed to leave the Vatican system. -

Reviews/Revues Acadiensis 97 Three Recent Books on Early New France Since 1971. the already considerable corpus of historical writing on early New France has been increased by the addition of three notable works.1 The credentials of the two authors are sufficiently awesome to dazzle any reviewer. Winner of the first Balzan Foundation Award in History, of the gold medal of the American Academy of Arts and Letters for biography and history, of the Emerson-Thoreau medal of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences for literature, of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, of the Pulitzer Prize on two occasions. Professor Emeritus at Harvard University. Rear Admiral USNR (ret.), author of some twenty-five historical works, Samuel Eliot Morison is without doubt the most prolific and most honoured American historian of this century. Marcel Trudel does not occupy such an Everest of distinction but with his score of books on French Canada, one of which earned him a Governor-General's Award in 1967, he ranks high on the list of Canada's leading historians. The European discovery of America was a topic admirably suited for a scholar of Professor Morison's training and temperament. Himself a seafarer. he has an intimate knowledge and great love of the sea and ships. Better than anyone, he can bring out the hazards that faced the sixteenth-century navigators as they sailed along unknown coasts in their unwieldly square- rigged vessels. His research technique, like that of fellow Bostonian Francis Parkman's. consists of supplementing the study of printed and manuscript sources with on-the-spot investigations. -
Two Beasts Become Friends
www.amazingdiscoveries.org 2011 Two Beasts Become Friends And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy...And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life… And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed…And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads (Revelation 13:1,8,11-12,16). This passage describes two beasts that will dominate world events at the end of time. The first arises out of the sea, and the second out of the earth. The second beast causes all that dwell upon the earth to worship the first beast, and in so doing they receive the mark of the Beast. Again, by applying the Biblical definitions to the symbols employed in this great prophecy, we can unravel its mysteries. The core symbols are beasts, heads, horns, sea, dragon, and earth. A beast represents a king or a kingdom according to Daniel 7:17. The two beasts of Revelation 13 thus represent two kingdoms or political powers that dominate world events in the last days. -
Chiniquy's Early Life
Born in Quebec, Charles Chiniquy gained great fame as a crusading priest for temperance who also established French-Canadian communities in Illinois. It was there that the celebrated priest first made Abraham Lincoln’s acquaintance when the popular Springfield lawyer defended him in the most high profile libel case in Lincoln’s career. Not long after this, because of the great shortcomings he saw in its teachings and practice, Chiniquy left the Catholic Church and became a Protestant. In his extremely popular autobiography, Fifty Years In The Church Of Rome, Chiniquy reported that after the murder of his close friend, the President, he traveled to Washington to conduct his own inquiry. He met with high ranking government officials who told him that they had no doubt that the Jesuits were behind Lincoln’s slaying but they wanted to keep this from the public to avoid giving new life to the broken rebellion and to avert possible bloodshed between Catholics and Protestants. For their role in the plot to assassinate Abraham Lincoln and other high government officials, eight people were put on trial before a military commission. Evidently, one of those officials who believed that the assassination was a Catholic plot was a dominant member of Lincoln’s cabinet, the man who was, in reality, in charge of the United States government in the hours and weeks after the murder and who also headed the official investigation into the assassination, Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton. This is part of the evidence that clearly points to Roman Catholic complicity in the murder of the President as well as general hostility to America and its democratic institutions. -

Frenchmen into Peasants: Modernity and Tradition in the Peopling of French North America LESLIE CHOQUETTE F THE TITLE of this essay seems famihar, that is because it was inspired by a well-known study by Eugen Weber, Peasants I into Frenchmen: The Modernization of Rural France, 1870-1^14. Weber argues in that work that in the late nineteenth century, peasants from the most primitive and isolated parts of France gradually became acculturated into full-fledged citizens of the modem French state.' Weber's title has been inverted here, for in many ways the record of the peophng of French North America is a record of exactly the same process, but in reverse. Peasants, as defined by Weber, are country folk whose labors serve primarily to assure their own subsistence. By modernization, he means 'the passage from relative isolation and a relatively closed economy to union with the outside world' through communications and a money economy (p. xii). This process has implications, not only for material conditions, but also for mentalities and political awareness. -

The origin of the Oblate charism lies in the spiritual experience of the Founder on Good Friday 1807. Father de Mazenod decided then to help the Church where the needs were more pressing in identification with the merciful Saviour. The source of our marian spirit can be found in the spiritual experience of the Founder on August 15, 1822 and very clearly in the approbation of the Congregation and the choice of the title Oblates of Mary Immaculate. We determine the place of Mary in our lives by our personal consecration to Her and through the special means of the propagation of the marian cult. In conclusion one can say that the Oblate vocation is a mystical identification with the merciful Saviour and Mary Immaculate, Mother of mercy. Graduate Department of History University of Toronto © Copyright by Jean-François Lozier (2012) In Each Other’s Arms: France and the St. Lawrence Mission Villages in War and Peace, 1630-1730 Jean-François Lozier Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto 2012 Abstract Beginning in the late 1630s, a diversity of Algonquian and Iroquoian peoples established under the auspices of Jesuit and, later, Sulpician missionaries a string of village communities in the St. Lawrence Valley. A diversity of peoples, whom the French lumped under the rubrics of “Algonquins”, “Montagnais”, “Hurons”, “Iroquois”, “Abenakis” and “Loups”, migrated to these villages in the hope of bettering their lives in trying times. This dissertation retraces the formation and the early development of these communities, exploring the entangled influence of armed conflict, diplomacy, kinship, and leadership on migration, community-building, and identity formation. The historiography of the St. Lawrence Valley – the French colonial heartland in North America – has tended to relegate these Aboriginal communities to the margins. Moreover, those scholars who have considered the formation of mission villages have tended to emphasize missionary initiative. Here, these villages are reimagined as a joint creation, the result of intersecting French and Aboriginal desires, needs, and priorities. The significance of these villages as sites of refuge becomes readily apparent, the trajectories of individual communities corresponding with the escalation of conflict or with ii its tense aftermath.
