Dear Friends, As the school year comes to a close, our minds and hearts are filled to the brim. It’s been a great year! What a school! Together we celebrated academic achievement and athletic excellence, enjoyed artistic presentations and theatrical productions, explored new interests and made new friends. We’ve learned much and shared experiences that will long remain with us. The strength of our community and wholehearted passion to make our school a wonderful place of learning for our students primarily, but for all of us too, makes AC a truly a special place. 50! We celebrated our fiftieth graduating class in May. This is a huge milestone for our school. Thank you to all the alumni from our first graduating class who attended our ceremony. It was hard to tell who was more excited, the Class of ’64 or the Class of ’14. We also celebrated our school’s history in March when we renovated Founder’s Hall, dedicating the school Chapel to Monsignor O’Gorman and debuting a display recognizing the important work of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. This permanent recognition to those who built our school is now open for all to see. Please stop by to take a look. The students at this school make me proud. And the community at large adds to that pride. We have so many students, parents, past parents, alumni and friends who support AC and help to spread the word about how great it is to be a Cougar. Keep the cheers and praise coming – we love to hear from you. Congratulations to all of our graduates! Good luck in your future endeavors and please stay in touch. We look forward to welcoming back our current students and helping orient the new ones in September, but until then, enjoy a restful and replenishing summer with your families.

Warm regards,

Visitors reminisce over a display recognizing the important work Stephen Biagioni, Principal of the Sisters of Saint Joseph.

Class of 2 014 Commends... Valedictorian Allen Judd

Allen Judd, the Valedictorian for the Class of 2014, has consistently proven to be a top student who has talent in many other areas. Allen’s near-flawless transcript, which includes nine Advanced Placement courses, and membership in the National Honor Society reflect his dedication to his school work. Allen has been a member of the Soccer, Cross Country, Indoor Track and Tennis teams at AC; serving as tennis captain since he was a sophomore and earning CCL All-Star and MVP Awards in tennis as well. He is also a member of the Science Team, Model UN, SADD, and was a member of the 2014 Yearbook staff. Allen was recognized for numerous awards at the awards ceremony, including medals in National Latin and Roman exams, and for being a National Merit Commended Student. Allen intends to study at Harvard University in the fall. Allen’s Commencement Address began with the mindset that every- thing in the universe is connected to everything else and that commu- nities are “held together by the intense bonds” between the members of the community. Allen reminded the students that they are a vital part of many communities- Arlington Catholic, their families, and the wider world. Reflecting on the time he spent in Camden, New Jersey with the Humanitarian Club, we were reminded that small acts, even in seemingly hopeless situations, can have a tremendous impact. Allen concluded by challenging his classmates to, “go out there, meet and bond, treat everyone as though they are siblings, make the world a family, one that we can be proud of, one that we can support and help grow.”

Salutatorian Connor O’Brien

Connor O’Brien, the Salutatorian for the Class of 2014, has maintained an excellent academic record while also participating in many aspects of high school life. Connor was a member of many clubs at AC: the National Honor Society Spanish National Honor Society; the Model United Nations; and Spanish/World Language Club to name a few. Like Allen, Connor was also a National Merit Commended Student. He was also elected by his peers to the Student Senate three times and served as a junior class representative. Connor also excelled on the athletic field, playing Football, Indoor Track, Soccer and Rugby, where he was the captain of the team, during his high school career. Connor plans on attending Georgetown University in the fall. Connor’s Commencement Address reminded his classmates that high school, while not like pictured in movies or on television, is a community where they have all shared much and grown together over the last four years. “We live in historic times,” he explained, reflecting on all that has happened in the past four years and as the 50th graduating class of the school. His closing thought, “We have the ability to shape our world into the kind of world we want to be a part of. With a class as unique and talented as ours, I know that we will make history,” reminded all of the potential we all have to shape the world into a better place by using our own special gifts and talents.

Senior Parent Social On February 6th, the members of the AC graduating class of 2014 and their parents gathered in the Arlington Catholic gymnasium for the annual Senior Parent Social. The night was highlighted by Hypnotist Extraordinaire Tommy Vee, who wowed the crowd as he persuaded, through hypnosis, select students and parents to do some pretty wild stunts. Senior Monica Galluccio showed off her dance moves, and the audience learned that Nick Makhlouta does not like it when people cut him off on the road. After the show, parents and students gathered for refreshments provided by the Senior Class Officers and their parents.

Commencement

On Friday, May 23rd, just under 2,000 people came 2together 014 at the Dana Athletic Center at Bentley University to celebrate the Class of 2014. In addition to the Class of 2014, we also celebrated the Class of 1964. The Class of 64 was AC’s first graduating class and were invited to lead the students in the procession. Principal Stephen Biagioni began the afternoon, welcoming family and friends of the graduates; this was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Hannah Doyon, Senior Class Vice President. Following an invocation, led by Pastor Father Brian Flatley, Presley Silva shared opening remarks with the audience. Salutatorian, Connor O’Brien took the stage and reflected on the past four years. Allen Judd, the Valedictorian, talked about the bonds that we all share. Serge Clivio ‘13 returned to commencement to lead us in song. John Carroll, a member of the Class of 1964 served as Commencement Speaker, offering sage advice to the Class of 2014. John was the first student president at Arlington Catholic High School as well as the first Football Captain at AC, along with his classmates, Steve Boeri ‘64 and Joe Beasley ‘64. After leaving AC, John went on to receive a BA from Boston College, where he played on the football team for two years. He then served on active duty in the US Navy until 1971, and on reserve duty until 1976. During that time, he received a JD from Boston University School of Law. John has been a trial lawyer since passing the Bar in 1974. He became a lawyer so that he could help people. At the beginning of his career, he worked on the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Indian Reservations as a staff attorney and considered that experience “life- altering.” Because of that experience, and his twenty years of Catholic education, John has continued to use his skills to help people through pro-bono work through the Boston Bar Association’s Volunteer Lawyers Project and the Catholic Lawyers Guild’s Saint Francis House. He is also on the Board of Directors of Greater Boston Legal Services and a part of the Bar Association’s Judicial Administration Section Council and Individual Rights and Responsibilities Section Council. In 2008, John received the President’s Award from the Massachusetts Bar Foundation. In 2010, he became the MBA’s representative on the Equal Justice Coalition and currently serves as the Chair. He is a lawyer member of

8 I ACHS Fidelitas SPRING 2014 the Commission of Judicial Conduct. He has also been named a “Super Lawyer” by his peers several years in a row. John’s Commencement Address recognized the pioneering work of Monsignor Oscar O’Gorman and the Sisters of Saint Joseph as well as the hard work of the Class of 2014, recognizing many of their accomplishments. Following John’s address to the audience, the students received their diplomas, and Principal Steve Biagioni’s commissioning of graduates ended another successful graduation here at Arlington Catholic.

NHS Duct Tape Fundraiser This past March, National Honor Society members held a fundraiser to benefit the Dempster Fund. However, this was no ordinary fundraiser. Our creative NHS members thought of an idea that would surely draw interest from students: duct taping a teacher to the wall. During lunch, students bought pieces of duct tape to tape Mr. Zalaski to the wall in the cafeteria. Mr. Zalaski stood on a chair while crowds of students securely stuck him to the wall and eagerly snapped a few pictures to tweet. At the end of lunch, the chair was removed and he remained suspended due to the dozens of pieces of duct tape that students purchased. Thank you to the NHS members who organized this fun event. Thank you especially to Mr. Zalaski for volunteering and making the fundraiser a memorable one. The fundraiser was a huge success and we hope that more teachers will volunteer for future duct tape fundraisers. French and Spanish

Campus Ministry Happenings The Arlington Catholic school community has had a great deal of activity in the Campus Ministry program during the second half of the year. The students and staff appreciate the importance of sharing their gifts and giving to others.

Christmas Gifts The students and staff of Arlington Catholic were very generous during the Christmas season by providing Christmas gifts to the clients at the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless. The school community became involved in “A Bed for Every Child” program by providing bed linens and stuffed animals for the project. No child in Massachusetts should have to worry about having a bed to sleep in at night. All of the gifts were beautifully wrapped and decorated. We hope that we have given some comfort to the poor in Massachusetts.

Above: Pilgrimage for Life Pilgrimage for Life During January, Campus Minister, Sister Barbara McHugh and Theology teacher Mr. Serge Clivio accompanied 19 students to the annual Pilgrimage for Life in Washington, DC. The Pilgrimage is held each year on the anniversary on Roe vs. Wade which legalized abortion in the United States. The Arlington Catholic contingent joined over 400 other students and chaperones from the Archdiocese of Boston. Cardinal Sean O’Malley joined the Boston delegation as well. The pilgrims braved snow and bitter cold weather to stand up and support the value of life. After the event, some students were asked to share their experiences with members of the Pro-Life group from St. Agnes Parish in Arlington. It was a privilege to travel to our nation’s capital in support of life.

Catholic Schools Week Catholic Schools Week is held each year throughout the nation during the last week of January. Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service was used as the special theme for this school year. Arlington Catholic is a community where faith is encouraged and lived daily, knowledge is shared among students, teachers and staff, and service is at the heart of the mission of Arlington Catholic. The students led special prayers each day and Mr. Biagioni provided free bagels to the students on Student Appreciation Day. Reflections on the Humanitarian‘‘ Club

Jake Fulton When posed with the prompt of uncovering what it means to be a humanitarian, my first thoughts were what it means to be a human. All humans have the rights to life, freedom, food, To be a shelter, clean drinking water, and clothing, as the very basics. In a perfect world, all human beings would be ensured these rights; there would be no need to work for charity and social justice. To be a humanitarian means to provide these needs to those less fortunate as it is their right. humanitarian Joining the Arlington Catholic Humanitarian Club was one of the best decisions I have made ‘‘ throughout my course at AC. Shortly after joining at the beginning of my sophomore year, I is not only to threw myself out of my comfort zone, acquiring a different perspective of problems plaguing today’s society, such as poverty, homelessness, and hunger. I have been fortunate to serve at such provide charity places as the Greater Boston Food Bank, the Boston Sock Exchange, and the Relay for Life of Arlington. Through all these experiences, I witnessed first hand the plights of those fighting and justice to those hunger, homelessness, and cancer, respectively. Through each of these events, I was overjoyed to see the masses catering to the needs of those less fortunate. Through each of these events, the less fortunate, but humanitarian spirit dwelling within me and those around me swelled. But even though each of these events made a difference, it is troubling to know that all the work of humanitarians is not enough to fulfill the rights of the needy. also is to be a Perhaps the greatest exercises of humanitarian values by the members of this club is the annual trip to the Romero Center in Camden, New Jersey. A little background on Camden: just East of beacon of hope Philadelphia, Camden is a city in southern New Jersey. According to the United States Census Bureau, Camden has a graduation rate of only 49%, a poverty rate soaring around 40%, and for the hopeless, the highest crime rate in the nation, 560% higher than the national average. Situated in a hub of urban decay, crime, and poverty, the mission of the Romero Center’s Urban Challenge is to the lost and introduce fortunate suburban people to the plight of Camden’s people, through education about the city and active service in areas such as food banks, nursing homes, pre-schools, and other institutions. Each site I have served at over my two trips to Camden has instilled in me the very forgotten in values of humanitarianism, that is, providing to the lacking what is their right. modern society. To be a humanitarian is not only to provide charity and justice to those less fortunate, but also is to be a beacon of hope for the hopeless, the lost and forgotten in modern society. Throughout my membership in the Arlington Catholic Humanitarian Club, active participation in various services to those in need has given me the tools to continue to work for justice in our world throughout my life, and to invite others to join the humanitarian cause.

But inside ... it’s undeniably AC: joyful voices, music, art, color, creativity, and impromptu sing-a-longs. Your descent into the Underground for Arts Night on May 7th was worth it. Art everywhere! Recycled water bottles and aluminum cans bloomed into bold flowers or surfaced as sea creatures; ceramic, papier mache, water color, paint, charcoal drew you into the intimate, friendly space. The event featured art from students in Art I, Painting & Drawing, Design, Sculpture, Visual Arts Studio and Photography Club, and was punctuated with presentations from the Drama Club and Choir. Throughout the evening, guests and artists mingled, contributing together to the Art Department’s ‘What is Art?’ mural project, enjoying refreshments and of course the good company. Thanks to all who participated and attended, your support of the Arts as AC is appreciated!

Scholar Athletes Jennifer Corso and Allen Judd Jennifer Corso has made the most of her four years at Arlington Catholic High School. Taking the easy path is not part of her makeup. Jen has excelled in the classroom throughout high school, having achieved First or Second Honors each quarter of her high school career; this achievement is amplified by the fact that she has taken multiple honors courses since freshman year, and currently challenges herself with five Advanced Placement courses. Fittingly, Jen is a member of both the Spanish National Honor Society and AC’s chapter of the National Honor Society. Along with carrying an intense academic workload, Jennifer has distinguished herself athletically as well. A four-year varsity starting goalie for the Girls’ Soccer team, Jennifer capped off a strong career with a highly decorated senior season. As captain, Jen led her team to the state tournament, and was voted as the team’s MVP and Sportsmanship Award winner. Her accomplishments were further recognized by her selection as both a CCL All- Star and an Eastern Mass All-Star. On the court, Jennifer was an integral part of AC’s highly successful Girls’ Basketball program. A three-year varsity member, Jen played on the 2012 league championship team and helped anchor the 2014 Division 2 State Championship squad. Jennifer is undecided about her college plans at this time, but will attend either Boston University or Bentley University in the fall. Throughout her academic and athletic career at AC, Jen Corso has personified the belief that, through hard work and determination, great things can be achieved!

Few students have left such an impressive mark at Arlington Catholic than Allen Judd. Allen has embraced AC’s motto of “Accept the Challenge” with full vigor both Scholar Athletes must achieve a academically and athletically. He has played four different sports in his time at AC, and has distinguished himself in Cross Country, Track, and Tennis. Allen has been voted a CCL All-Star twice in Cross Country, and has had a great deal of success during his indoor seasons. In Tennis, Allen has been a dominant force in the CCL, having been voted League MVP as a sophomore and as a junior. Most importantly, he has been voted by his peers as a three- year captain, a rare feat that demonstrates his leadership and the respect garnered through his hard work and commitment to his sport. Allen is the embodiment of “scholar-athlete,” and his accomplishments will be ultimately recognized as the Valedictorian of AC’s Class of 2014. He will further his education at Harvard University in the fall.

Saint Agnes School Hall of Fame As part of the 125th Anniversary that Saint Agnes School is celebrating this year, they inducted four inaugural members into their Hall of Fame. Arlington Catholic is proud that three of those four members are also Arlington Catholic Alumni! So, a heartfelt congratulations goes out to Saint Agnes School for their 125 years of success, as well as congratulations to Charlie Keefe ’69, Ed Woods ’73 and Betty (Papagni) Lally ’74. In additional to being AC Alums, we are also blessed to have Betty Lally as a member of the Arlington Catholic High School staff.

Here is an excerpt from Betty’s acceptance speech that we would like to share with you:

“I am proud and humbled to be standing here in front of you tonight. I want to acknowledge my family, friends and colleagues here tonight. I feel very blessed to have my husband and family here (most of whom are also alumns of St. Agnes and Arlington Catholic) and I am so grateful for their love and support. I would like to especially recognize my parents for which I am so happy to be able to share this with them tonight. They have taught me the importance of family, friendship, values and my Catholic beliefs. My Catholic education was indeed a privilege and wonderful gift from them. The values and faith they taught me at home were reinforced every day at school. St. Agnes was the place that I thrived spiritually, socially and academically because it instilled Catholic values, beliefs and traditions while receiving a quality education. I have been lucky enough to experience St. Agnes as a student and a parent as well as an employee of the parish. After graduating from St. Agnes I traveled across the street to Arlington Catholic and then on to Aquinas College. I was taught by the Sisters of St. Joseph for 14 years and they definitely have played an important role in shaping me to become the person I am today. While sometimes I may have considered the rules of Catholic education as “strict”, these rules served as guidelines and I truly believe that they have helped to strengthen my principles and encouraged me to make good decisions. Arlington Catholic is only a few short steps away from St Agnes and it was a bridge for me to continue my Catholic education and spiritual growth. As the Guidance secretary at Arlington Catholic, I actively participate in nurturing and mentoring high school students. Some of my favorite activities and programs that I am involved in include the Drama Club, the Cougar Cub program, leading junior retreats, making Origami Cranes for graduation, hockey cheerleading coach, and most importantly, helping incoming freshmen students feel welcomed at AC. I also want to add that I have recently become involved with Brigham and Women’s Hospital knitting hats for inner city children. This has become a most rewarding experience especially when I received a personalized “thank you” note from a young boy for his hand made hat and a picture of him wearing it with the biggest smile on his face. I credit St. Agnes School and Arlington Catholic for developing my personal character with the foundation for doing for others. Lastly, but certainly not the least, I also want to acknowledge all the parents I have had the pleasure to interact and become friends with as a parent at St. Agnes because their sacrifices, dedication and their spirit of volunteerism have also contributed to the prosperity of the school and our children. So, to all of you, I share this award.

As you know, the Sisters started this school and made it flourish, they also were the seeds that inspired and nourished thousands of young minds. Many of our alums would not be who they are without the support, guidance and dedication of these nuns, and this school certainly would not be what it is without them. On March 16th, we dedicated this new display at Arlington Catholic. The day began with a Mass of celebration at Saint Agnes Church, followed by a reception and dedication ceremony at Arlington Catholic. Father Flatley presided over the Mass and led the dedication ceremony, along with Sister Rosemary Brennan, the current President of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston. Many of the Sisters of Saint Joseph attended the ceremony, including Sister Frances Agnes Blake, who was one of the first Faculty members at AC!

Inspiration – Pro Bono! The Arlington Catholic Human Rights Club invited Veronica Carlino, Class of 2003, to address the topic of “Values, Justice and the Law”. Veronica is currently an Assistant District Attorney for Middlesex County. After graduating from Suffolk University, summa cum laude, Veronica attended New England School of Law where she received her J.D., cum laude. A group of more than forty students gathered in the library after school to hear Veronica’s presentation. Veronica talked about how her education at Arlington Catholic fueled her passion for social justice issues and helped her discover her talent for public speaking and debate. Her intellect, passion, and warmth of personality impressed all those who were present. Veronica had the students debrief a famous case that addressed the moral complexities involved in administering justice. With Veronica’s encouragement, the students asked thought-provoking questions that stimulated debate and discussion. Veronica also fielded general questions about the nature of law school and her work as an Assistant District Attorney. We are so proud of Veronica’s accomplishments. Her desire to make a meaningful contribution to society through her commitment to intellectual rigor, moral courage, justice and compassion embodies the spirit of Arlington Catholic. Some of the students who attended the presentation share their comments below:

“She clearly explained how her high school “She was inspiring in that she used to be choices changed who she was and led her shy but now is a prominent woman.
