If you’re the Dungeon Master running the game, I encourage you to also pick up a copy of the D&D 5th Edition Starter Set, which is very reasonably-priced and includes a short introductory adventure. If you like the game and intend to continue writing your own adventures, the Dungeon Master should also acquire a copy of the 5th Edition Dungeon Master’s Guide and Monster Manual. For further premade adventures you might like the Hoard of the Dragon Queen hardcover adventure and its sequel, Rise of Tiamat, or the Princes of the Apocalypse adventure (which makes a good sequel to the adventure in the Starter Set). You can also go to DNDClassics.com and purchase one of their 5th edition adventure PDFs. The “Ghosts of Dragonspear Castle” adventure is a good starting point, which will take characters from level 1 to 10. Finally, there’s many sources of free adventures available online. You may have to adapt them to 5th-edition rules, but it may be the best option if paid adventures aren’t in your budget! Thank you for your support of the author’s rights. For Audrey D. and her grandma, some of my very best friends A Whole New Ball Game Sunset Shimmer dashed toward Canterlot High. Her red-gold hair wafted behind her like a pony’s wavy mane. She was so excited! She glanced at her phone one more time. Could the news really be true? She ran over to the statue of the Wondercolt. Rainbow Dash and Applejack were already there, and the other girls were seconds behind her. “I got your text, Rainbow Dash,” Sunset Shimmer exclaimed breathlessly. “Did something come through the portal? Is Equestrian magic on the loose? Did Twilight come back with a problem that only we can solve?” Pinkie Pie giggled. “Has a giant cake monster covered all the cakes in the world in cake?” Rainbow Dash was surprised that all the girls had overreacted. What did they want? Another trio of evil Sirens to infiltrate their school and try to sow disharmony? She held up her guitar. The emergency was that she had broken a string—and she really wanted to practice some new songs for their band, the Sonic Rainbooms.

  • Animating Race the Production and Ascription of Asian-Ness in the Animation of Avatar: the Last Airbender and the Legend of Korra
Animating Race The Production and Ascription of Asian-ness in the Animation of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra Francis M. Agnoli Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) University of East Anglia School of Art, Media and American Studies April 2020 This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 2 Abstract How and by what means is race ascribed to an animated body? My thesis addresses this question by reconstructing the production narratives around the Nickelodeon television series Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-08) and its sequel The Legend of Korra (2012-14). Through original and preexisting interviews, I determine how the ascription of race occurs at every stage of production. To do so, I triangulate theories related to race as a social construct, using a definition composed by sociologists Matthew Desmond and Mustafa Emirbayer; re-presentations of the body in animation, drawing upon art historian Nicholas Mirzoeff’s concept of the bodyscape; and the cinematic voice as described by film scholars Rick Altman, Mary Ann Doane, Michel Chion, and Gianluca Sergi. Even production processes not directly related to character design, animation, or performance contribute to the ascription of race. Therefore, this thesis also references writings on culture, such as those on cultural appropriation, cultural flow/traffic, and transculturation; fantasy, an impulse to break away from mimesis; and realist animation conventions, which relates to Paul Wells’ concept of hyper-realism.

THE FRIENDSHIP EXPRESS – DAY TWILIGHT is trying to get in a little time with her trainee STARLIGHT—But the ponies are too excited to focus. They’re on their way to the Crystal Empire on an official trip to visit Twilight’s new niece (the Royal Baby-- Flurry Heart) and her parents Shining Armor and Cadence. As the ponies chat about how excited they are, SPIKE stumbles in, dragging a MASSIVE STEAMER TRUNK. As the train rounds a bend, the trunk scoots away from him, smashes into the wall, and ejects TONS of clothing—burying Spike! As the ponies help dig Spike out of the pret-a- porte mountain, they ask him: “Why have you packed more clothes than Rarity when she’s going to Equestria Fashion Week?” Spike: “They’re all disguises.” Um, What? Explanation please… Spike humblebrags that in the Crystal Empire he’s “kind of a big deal”—They call him the “Great Hero” because he, “you know, saved the kingdom… a couple of times.

The lyrics’ presence allows filmmakers to digress from sequential imagery through introduction of nonlinear visual elements. I will analyze these surrealist film elements through several post-modern philosophies to better understand how this animated audio-visual synthesis resides in the larger world of art theory and its relationship to the popular music video.
