Roosevelt, in response to the atrocities as well as to the growing refugee populations in allied occupied zones in Europe, allowed for 1000 refugees to come to America for the duration of the war. They were placed at the Fort Ontario Emergency Refugee Shelter in Oswego, NY. This shelter would become the only refugee shelter established in America for victims of the Nazi Holocaust. The shelter was active from August 1944 - February 1946. Franklin Delano Roosevelt: “...because the facilities in southern Italy for refugees have been overtaxed.” “...important that the United States indicate that it is ready to share the burden of caring for refugees during the war. Accordingly, I have decided that approximately 1,000 refugees should be immediately brought from Italy to this country, to be placed in an Emergency Refugee Shelter to be established at Fort Ontario near Oswego, New York, where under appropriate security restrictions they will remain for the duration of the war.” Source: Edward B. • Ruth Gruber’S Inspiring Story
Ruth Gruber’s inspiring story Born in Brooklyn in 1911 (where she grew to adolescence believing that everyone was Jewish), the prolific author and photo-journalist Ruth Gruber will reach her 99th birthday on Sept. 30. Her life story is currently being told in “Ahead of Time,” a documentary film that is well worth seeing. She first obtained notoriety when she became the world’s youngest Ph.D., earning her doctorate on the writings of Virginia Woolf, in Germany, on the eve of the Nazi takeover. She became a correspondent for the Herald Tribune where she again made news reporting on the Soviet Arctic in 1935. Gruber repeated a similar task in 1942, this time reporting on conditions in Alaska for the Roosevelt administration. This earned her the credibility to again work for the government in escorting a thousand Jewish refugees from Europe, to the US, where they were interned in Oswego, NY. This was one of the few concrete achievements of the Roosevelt administration in rescuing Jews from the Holocaust—an effort forced upon FDR by his Secretary of the Treasury, Henry Morgenthau, who had assembled evidence of the State Department’s work to block Jewish immigration and had threatened to make this public. The film makes reference to this fact. Her next milestone event was in reporting on the “Exodus” story, from Palestine, for the New York Post. This was the Haganah ship, filled to the gills with Jewish refugees, which attempted to run the British blockade of Palestine in 1947, only to be stopped and violently boarded by British sailors and marines.

Columbia University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Human Rights Studies Master of Arts Program Silencing “Breaking the Silence”: The Israeli government’s agenda respecting human rights NGOs activism since 2009 Ido Dembin Thesis Adviser: Prof. Yinon Cohen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts 12 September, 2018 Abstract This research examines a key aspect in the deterioration of Israeli democracy between 2009-2018. Mainly, it looks at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Right-wing governments utilization of legislative procedure to limit the right to free speech. The aspects of the right to free speech discussed here pertain to dissenting and critical activism against these government’s policies. The suppression of said right is manifested in the marginalization, delegitimization and ultimately silencing of its expression in Human Rights NGOs activism. To demonstrate this, the research presents a case study of one such NGO – “Breaking the Silence” – and the legal and political actions designed to cause its eventual ousting from mainstream Israeli discourse. The research focuses on the importance and uniqueness of this NGO, as well as the ways in which the government perceives and acts against it. First, it analyzes the NGO’s history, modus operandi and goals, emphasizing the uniqueness that makes it a particularly fascinating case. Then, it researches the government’s specific interest in crippling and limiting its influence. Finally, it highlights the government’s toolbox and utilization thereof against it. By shining a light on this case, the research seeks to show the process of watering down of a fundamental right within Israeli democracy – which is instrumental to understanding the state’s risk of decline towards illiberal democracy.

  • The Israel/Palestine Question
THE ISRAEL/PALESTINE QUESTION The Israel/Palestine Question assimilates diverse interpretations of the origins of the Middle East conflict with emphasis on the fight for Palestine and its religious and political roots. Drawing largely on scholarly debates in Israel during the last two decades, which have become known as ‘historical revisionism’, the collection presents the most recent developments in the historiography of the Arab-Israeli conflict and a critical reassessment of Israel’s past. The volume commences with an overview of Palestinian history and the origins of modern Palestine, and includes essays on the early Zionist settlement, Mandatory Palestine, the 1948 war, international influences on the conflict and the Intifada. Ilan Pappé is Professor at Haifa University, Israel. His previous books include Britain and the Arab-Israeli Conflict (1988), The Making of the Arab-Israeli Conflict, 1947–51 (1994) and A History of Modern Palestine and Israel (forthcoming). Rewriting Histories focuses on historical themes where standard conclusions are facing a major challenge. Each book presents 8 to 10 papers (edited and annotated where necessary) at the forefront of current research and interpretation, offering students an accessible way to engage with contemporary debates. Series editor Jack R.Censer is Professor of History at George Mason University. • Down with Britain, Away with Zionism: the 'Canaanites'
DOWN WITH BRITAIN, AWAY WITH ZIONISM: THE ‘CANAANITES’ AND ‘LOHAMEY HERUT ISRAEL’ BETWEEN TWO ADVERSARIES Roman Vater* ABSTRACT: The imposition of the British Mandate over Palestine in 1922 put the Zionist leadership between a rock and a hard place, between its declared allegiance to the idea of Jewish sovereignty and the necessity of cooperation with a foreign ruler. Eventually, both Labour and Revisionist Zionism accommodated themselves to the new situation and chose a strategic partnership with the British Empire. However, dissident opinions within the Revisionist movement were voiced by a group known as the Maximalist Revisionists from the early 1930s. This article analyzes the intellectual and political development of two Maximalist Revisionists – Yonatan Ratosh and Israel Eldad – tracing their gradual shift to anti-Zionist positions. Some questions raised include: when does opposition to Zionist politics transform into opposition to Zionist ideology, and what are the implications of such a transition for the Israeli political scene after 1948? Introduction The standard narrative of Israel’s journey to independence goes generally as follows: when the British military rule in Palestine was replaced in 1922 with a Mandate of which the purpose was to implement the 1917 Balfour Declaration promising support for a Jewish ‘national home’, the Jewish Yishuv in Palestine gained a powerful protector. In consequence, Zionist politics underwent a serious shift when both the leftist Labour camp, led by David Ben-Gurion (1886-1973), and the rightist Revisionist camp, led by Zeev (Vladimir) Jabotinsky (1880-1940), threw in their lot with Britain. The idea of the ‘covenant between the Empire and the Hebrew state’1 became a paradigm for both camps, which (temporarily) replaced their demand for a Jewish state with the long-term prospect of bringing the Yishuv to qualitative and quantitative supremacy over the Palestinian Arabs under the wings of the British Empire.

Heritage Project: Biography of Ralph Israel Charak Sarah Charak, December 2010 1 I’ve always been fascinated by my Saba’s story. As a small child, I remember being told stories of his survival. I would sit on his lap, imagining my Saba as a hero; my Saba creeping through the forests; my Saba fooling the Nazis… As I grew up, my mental image of Saba changed. I was amazed less by his heroism and more by his intelligence and resourcefulness. When I started to interview Saba earlier this year, my understanding of his story changed again. Discovering the details – the dates and the names and the places, and the countless stories of lucky chances – forced me to think about the miracle that was his survival. I questioned, wondered, and tried to understand. How?
