  • The Politics of Perception and the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019
The Politics of Perception and the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 Malini Bhattacharjee* The contours of politics often get shaped not so much on the basis of the actual impact of certain policies but more by the perceptions about their impact by different stakeholders. The Citizenship Amendment Act of 2019 and the controversy it has created is an important example in this regard. As Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal gear up for State Assembly elections this year, the CAA is back in public discourse and will possibly be a turning point in deciding the electoral outcomes in at least some states, if not more. Some analysts have argued that the CAA is likely to have an important impact in the elections of Assam as the CAA-NRC controversy has its genesis in Assam and because the sentiment against the ‘foreigner’ has been the highest in the region since several decades now owing to historical reasons. As is the case with several contemporary debates in India, the outlines of the CAA-NRC discourse continue to be framed within the binary walls of secularism vis-à-vis communalism. What appears to be missing in this debate is a serious intellectual reflection on how the CAA validates or deflects from the conceptual idea of citizenship in contemporary times. The larger normative rationale behind the objective of protecting the rights of religious minorities fleeing persecution from neighbouring countries has also been side-lined. While several analysts have criticised the CAA for being unjust to the north eastern states and for violating the Assam Accord, the question of refugees fleeing from erstwhile East Pakistan and Bangladesh has not been sufficiently well examined.

  • History of Transportation Demand in Ahmedabad By
Real Estate Studies and Management Academy History of Transportation Demand in Ahmedabad by N.K. Patel President GICEA Early Days Real Estate Studies and Management Academy • In early days, like every other city, Ahmedabad residents use to walk on foot to transport themselves from one place to another. • With passage of time, bicycles became popular soon before automobiles were introduced. • The primary reason for transportation was to travel from Home to work and back. Real Estate Studies and Management Transportation needs Academy • Transportation needs grow when the city starts expanding. • Ahmedabad started expanding on the north-east side with growth of textile mills ( due to south-west wind direction) • This growth was promoted by nearness to railway station and the wall city area which was just 3 km. away. • Areas such as Gomtipur, Rakhiyal and Asarwa developed as textile mill hubs. • Mill workers were able to get accomodation in the nearby residences such as Chawls. Real Estate Studies and Management Decay of Eastern Ahmedabad Academy • Due to closure of textile mills all type of Real Estate stock deteriorated due to lack of maintenance. • Due to Pollution higher income group people preferred to migrate in the western ahmedabad. • Till 1987 the majority of eastern Ahmedabad development was outside the AMC limits so no basic infrastructure was made available. • Establishment of GIDC estates contributed to the growth of slums where Industrial workers resided. Real Estate Studies and Management Decay of Eastern Ahmedabad Academy • ULCRA also contributed illegal construction. • Due to cheaper housing availability, new migrants from U.P. and Bihar settled in these areas.

Taking a closer look at the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the authors explore the political tensions, social dynamics and economic forces thal contributed to making the state what it is today, the impact of the British policies; the process of industrialization and urbanization^ and the rise of the middle class; the emergence of the idea of '5wadeshi“; the coming £ G and hr and his attempts to transform society and politics by bringing together diverse Gujarati cultural sources; and the series of communal riots that rocked Gujarat even as the state was consumed by nationalist fervour. Driving this study is an attempt to analyse the election results of the state of Assam where Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies, Mitrajot or National Democratic Alliance (NDA), successfully defeated the Indian National Congress (INC), and its allies, Mahajot (Grand Alliance). Drawing primarily upon secondary data and applying GIS techniques, the study makes a critical analogy of how Mitrajot managed to accomplish victory.
