JAGUAR XJ40 30TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATIVE DRIVE

INTRODUCTION

XJ40 at 30! At this very hotel in September 1986, the 'new XJ6' was launched to the world's press. Paul Skilleter, who was amongst those present at Dunkeld thirty years ago, looks back at this critical moment in Jaguar's history.

The arrival of a new XJ is always a very big occasion, but back in the mid-1980s it was vastly more important to Jaguar than it has been in more recent years. This is because back then Jaguar was a two-model company, offering one saloon (the Series 3) and one sports model (the XJ-S). The saloon was by far the biggest seller of the two, so the XJ6 was the absolute cornerstone of Jaguar’s very existence – this being decades before SUVs, cross-overs and a plethora of other variations began to eat into the traditional luxury-saloon market. By contrast, today's XJ saloon can almost be described as a niche model... Code-named XJ40, the new model replaced the Series 3 XJ6. After the original XJ6 of 1968, the XJ had been through a Series 2 upgrade before evolving into the crisper Series 3 of 1979. With John Egan assuming control of Jaguar shortly afterwards, the Series 3 benefited from improved quality and as the 1980s progressed, it became a true sales success including in the United States. However, the Series 3 was based on mid-1960s technology and, although not everyone at Browns Lane agreed, it was generally felt that a fundamentally new XJ saloon was needed. In fact this had been the view even during the Series 2 era of the mid-1970s which, almost unbelievably, is when the first attempts at designing an all-new XJ began. But progress had been dogged by limited resources (Jaguar was tiny compared with such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW) and by unsettling management changes as Jaguar became ever more enmeshed in British Leyland. Finally, under the aegis of John Egan, on 8th October 1986 the new saloon was announced. It shared nothing with Series 3, the body, suspension, brakes and drive-train all having been developed especially for it. Two six-cylinder engines were offered, the twin-cam all-aluminium 3.6 litre unit originally seen in the XJ-S of 1983, and a new single-cam 2.9 litre. Both were available in either basic XJ6 or Sovereign specification, with the top spec. model being the 3.6 litre

JAGUAR XJ40 30TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATIVE DRIVE powered Daimler. Two transmissions were offered, the seldom-specified Getrag five-speed manual, and the much more popular four-speed ZF type 4HP22 automatic. This featured the unique 'J' shaped selector gate, giving the driver a useful degree of manual control over gear selection. It was soon labelled the 'Randle Handle' after Jaguar’s engineering director, Jim Randle! The car's electrical system was amongst some of XJ40's highly advanced features, using as it did low-current switching. Impressively refined and with handling that made the Series 3 feel old- fashioned, XJ40 courted controversy with its abandonment of traditional Jaguar curves. But it was innately well-proportioned and its shape has surely stood the test of time well. That Jaguar, with tiny resources compared with Mercedes- Benz and BMW, could produce a luxury sports saloon with world-leading refinement, handling and performance is a tribute to Jaguar's then-chairman, (Sir) John Egan, his engineering director (Professor) Jim Randle, and all the talented team behind them. Not to mention the car's superb value-for-money. It is our great pleasure to say that Jim Randle himself is with us this weekend, along with other members of the original XJ40 project team including former vehicle proving engineer Ed Abbott, former project engineer Howard Hunt (and his wife Ann – they met at this hotel during the press launch!), Jonathan Partridge from Sales & Marketing and former press cars manager (and vehicle proving engineer) Peter Taylor. As for XJ40, it was consistently improved during production, especially with the upgraded 4.0 litre range in September 1989, and finally made an honourable exit in 1994. By then over 209,000 had been sold worldwide, a figure which makes it the best-selling XJ ever. Today the XJ40 is still more than capable of providing refined, luxury motoring, with its many merits being appreciated by an ever-increasing circle of enthusiasts. We hope that will continue for many years into the future.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION The cover of this souvenir route book is a copy of the design used on the original 1986 launch route books. The drive follows one of the original routes used by international journalists during the 1986 Press Launch of the XJ40. Apart from a slight increase in traffic density, (nothing like down south!) and road surfaces being not quite so good in odd sections of the route, surprisingly little has changed over the 30 years that have passed since the launch. The route begins with a drive through Dunkeld, once many years ago the capital of Scotland. We cross the Tay for the first time over Thomas Telford's handsome bridge, then cross the A9 to head for , through beautiful, unspoilt countryside. On the way we pass through the Sma' Glen, a favourite picnic spot for locals and visitors alike. Passing through Crieff we drive through an area of rich farmland till we reach where we commence a delightful lochside drive, closely following the shores of Loch Earn, all the way to the optional coffee stop at Lochearnhead. Leaving the coffee stop we quickly turn to climb through Glen Ogle, with the old railway viaducts clinging to the hillside, turning at the end of the glen for Killin, an attractive village at the western end of Loch Tay. Crossing the river bridge at the village one can view the famous Falls of Dochart. We now begin our drive along the entire length of Loch Tay. Ben towers over us to the left, with magnificent views across the loch to our right. A drive to be remembered! At the eastern end of the loch we reach Kenmore, where you might like to stop for lunch. A pretty, compact village with unrivalled views of both river and loch Tay. Leaving Kenmore we start our return journey to Dunkeld. On this section of the route we will never be far from the banks of the Tay. Passing through Aberfeldy, with its large whisky distillery, we eventually leave the A827 to join the B898 - the only B road on our journey. This enables us to wend our way back to Dunkeld at a leisurely pace through forests and lush Perthshire farmland. A final crossing of the Tay brings us back to Dunkeld and our hotel. The event is being run as a Touring Assembly under MSA exemption permit number 96990
