Spring 2019 • UDC Focus uniteddobermanclub.com 11 Versatility of the Search Dog Versatility: the ability to adapt or be adapted to many different functions or activities.

by Pam S. Burns

Thinking about the main topic of this issue made me ponder the versatility of the search dog. These dogs are versatility personified. They end up wearing many hats, so to speak. Of course, their main function is to find, be it live or deceased. They spend hours and hours training and searching, clearing more negative acres than locating the missing. The dogs have to adapt to a variety of terrain, locations, noise and weather conditions. They do it all for their toy, a special treat and their devotion to their handler. They go out and work long hours and get up the next day to work some more, until all probability of detection (POD) has been ex hausted.

They will make an officer feel better because he’s worked so hard to find a missing child, taking their toy over to him to engage him and forget for a moment that the child hasn’t been located. Or the family that stands above watching dogs give indications that their loved one is in the water. Waiting patiently for the recovery. Meeting the dogs who worked so diligently to locate their family member. Taking their minds off what has happened, if only for a short time. And they comfort their handler, who has to put on a brave face when the outcome is bad. The dogs typically do it on their own. Over and over I’ve seen it happen with my own boys. They take it upon themselves to do something unexpected, to reach out to someone who’s hurting. Even my boy Andor, who was in no way a social butterfly (Translation: a one-woman dog), stunned us by interacting with a Above: Trace working an airport. detective on a particularly tough case. Below: Argus doing a school demo. At 9/11 we’ve all seen the SAR dogs also acting as therapy dogs for the other personnel who were searching for the missing. Besides doing their normal search work, these dogs are often asked to do demos and interact with various age groups and those with disabilities. They are expected to take it in stride. I call them wash-and-wear dogs. Go anywhere, do anything. They have to be agile, adaptable to various footing, and swimming is a great skill to have. They need to be mentally stable as well. Our dogs have to put up with a lot of things that just plain aren’t normal. Like being randomly hugged by strangers, having little kids grab and prod quicker than you can blink an eye. They handle it all with grace and tolerance. In my estimation, the search dog fits the definition of versatility with their ability to adapt to many different functions and activities. In dock diving, there never has been an issue having a second person on the dock to hold him or throw the toy. Dex is always all about going after the toy and bringing it back. His skill at this sport was evident when he pulled off the best jump (20 ft. 10 in.) for a Dobe at the 2017 North American Diving Dog (NADD)/AKC Eukanuba National Championship in Orlando, Florida, a pleasant surprise to

Why did you choose Storm? I chose Storm for her structure, longevity in her pedigree, multi CHs including Sieger winners through many generations combined with working titles, including both parents. I admire the Iz Zoosfery (Mr. Rosenberg) breeding program. We are currently chasing an American CH title. My main interest is sport, but her structure is nice enough to achieve an American CH as a full Euro. She has 12 points after a few months of showing, but needs two majors to finish. 32 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus • Spring 2019 I spent less than five minutes coming up with that list, so certainly there must be even more. Dogs are incredible! Now I don’t expect to see a Doberman sled dog anytime soon, so I’m not implying that Dobermans do all these things or even that they can, but I bet they can do most of them if not all. Every individual Doberman has its own inherent capabilities, and then the environment into which it is born and nurtured comes into consideration. I take training as part of nurturing, at least nurturing the bond between dog and owner. Some Dobermans are more versatile than others, but I believe the Doberman is a versatile breed. This is the story, the information, we want to share with the club and to highlight some of our Dobermans in their activities. When I think of the things I see in common in these various activities, the main one is the focus the dog has on its owner and the task. Whether tracking, heeling, diving or doing protection, our dogs are focused on us as well as the task at hand. It’s not something they go off and do on their own. Sure, they run a course, but it’s at the direction of the handler. IPO combines some of these activities albeit in a different environment or structure. The dogs perform obedience, heeling, down, stay, come, wait, jumps and retrieve (aka fetch). They do scent work by tracking a path laid down rather than finding specifics scents, though SAR and HRD dogs are trained to find specific individuals or deceased persons. Dobermans can be trained to track, find and alert to an incredible spectrum of of scents and environments. And when it comes to environments, the photos I’ve seen that warm my heart the most are the Dobermans doing therapy work. It shows a side of the breed that we know well, though the general public often is unaware. While this is far from a comprehensive presentation, I hope it will inspire readers to consider what can be done with our dogs. O

Spring 2019 • UDC Focus uniteddobermanclub.com 37 In Remembrance

The working Doberman community was rocked by the loss of three UDC members and long-time contributors to our breed during the later part of 2018 and the early part of 2019. The lives of these individuals demonstrated the depth and breadth of our relationships with our beloved Dobermans.

UDC member Lyn Kargaard, of Ellendale, Delaware, passed away on November 5, 2018, as the result of a car accident. She was 67 years old. Her beautiful bitch Cricket (CH Eastwick’s Cricket, RATI AX AXJ NF CGC ROM) was traveling with her and was also killed in the accident. Lyn enjoyed competing with her dogs in AKC and UDC events. Many of us remember her showing her beautiful Charlie Brown (AKC/UDC CH Viking’s Charlie Brown CDX AX AXJ VPG3 IPO3 OB3 TT ZTP1A VCX CGC ROM LC-10D), one of a handful of AKC champion Dobermans that were also titled in working dog sport. Lyn was always supportive of others and very kind to novices in the sport. She will be missed. Rest in peace Lyn.

UDC founding member Jospeh Kurz, of Lonedell, Missouri, passed away on January 2, 2019, after a long illness. He was 85 years old. He is survived by his wife, Linda Kurz, also a UDC founding member. He was Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at Washington University in St. Louis. Linda and Joe were fixtures at many UDC events in the early days. Joe attended to dogs while Linda attended long meetings. In addition to dog sport, Linda and Joe enjoyed wilderness camping with their beloved Dobermans into their elder years, and each year we would hear about the adventures of Linda and Joe during the past year’s camping trip. The last issue of FOCUS featured an article written by Joe describing one of their trips. Carry on Joe.

UDC member Pam Burns of Latham, New York, passed away on February 12, 2019, following a brief illness. She was 60 years old. Pam was an energetic and zealous competitor, showing her Dobermans in AKC, UDC and other working dog events, achieving multiple High in Trial awards in a variety of venues. She was present at many UDC events and always willing to lend a hand. Fond memories of Pam include the big, floppy hat that she would wear at UDC events during the warm months, and the big canvas hat she would wear during the winter months. Pam is survived by her five Dobermans. The Doberman community came together upon Pam’s passing and assisted in getting her dogs into good homes where they will be appreciated for their working character. Rest easy Pam, we’ve got your babies where they need to be. O
