At the most recent Consistory of cardinals on February 12 and 13, 2015, Fr. Federico Lombardi reported that the cardinals expressed the hope of “an increasingly active role” for women. Although Pope Francis stated the door is closed on the question of ordination for women to the priesthood, he has been emphatic in his call for a stronger presence of women elsewhere. He recently appointed Sr. Mary Melone, the first women to date, to head a Pontifical University; Sr. Luzia Premoli, the first women to be appointed as a member of the Congregation on Evangelizat ion of Peoples, and has stated that women should take up positions of greater leadership within the Vatican. So how many women are in positions of leadership within the Curia? How many assert real influence? While it is difficult to accurately measure the level of influence women exercise, the chart below has been generated to further that discussion by showing the current roles women play now in Vatican congregations, pontifical councils, and other commissions, committees and offices. Secretariats, Congregations, and Pontifical Councils There are two secretariats, nine congregations and twelve pontifical councils. Below is a chart indicating the number of Vatican officials broken out in terms of male/female roles from undersecretary and above. While women have slowly gained certain leadership roles in the Vatican, you still need just one hand to count those who hold top- level positions in the secretariats, congregations and pontifical councils.

After playing a key role in the process of the Roman Curia’s communications reform, he has now been appointed titular Bishop of Drivastrum and the Episcopal Consecration is due to take place in St Peter’s Basilica on the afternoon of 27 February. Prize of the Pontifical Academies The Pontifical Academy of Fine Arts and Letters of the Virtuosi at the Pantheon has announced the contest to award the Prize of the Pontifical Academies 2016, a sum of Euro 20,000.00. The 2016 edition is open to young artists and institutions working in the fields of literature, poetry and music. At first Inter Mirifica was not considered to be of great theological significance, yet it was precisely this characteristic which made sure it was not later stigmatized as belonging to a theology not yet influenced by the developments at the Council.     Portrait of Pope Francis: Wim Wenders' camera reveals an attractive character Pope Francis with the film director Wim Wenders Photo: CNS/Vatican Media When the helicopter carrying Pope Benedict XVI on the day he left office was shot swooping away from the apostolic palace in the Vatican and then rising high above the domes and towers of Rome, the then Monsignor, now Bishop, Paul Tighe, commentating for the BBC, couldn’t help exclaiming: “This is like Fellini!” In fact the dramatic footage was the brainchild of Mgr Dario Edoardo Viganò, a movie buff who had recently been appointed director of Vatican Television. Viganò’s career at the Vatican, like the helicopter, rose higher and higher, with Benedict’s successor, Francis, appointing him Prefect of the new Secretariat for Communications, until it crashed with his resignation over a public relations fiasco. But in the small print at the end of Wim Wenders’ new documentary on Pope Francis there is a credit to Viganò for helping to get the film produced. In doing so, he has enabled Wenders to create a film of significant insight into Francis’ pontificate – albeit with some irritating flaws and omissions. That mention of the film director Federico Fellini by Paul Tighe referenced a helicopter flight in La Dolce Vita, a movie that conveyed both the beauty and elegance, and the decadence and corruption of Rome. The same could be said of Wim Wenders’ account here of the Vatican. But there is much more, too, for this is a narrative dominated by Francis’ deeply attractive character. It is not particularly revelatory or insightful for those already well versed in the story of Francis’ five-year pontificate.

In front of an enthusiastic crowd of diocesan employees and a host of local media gathered in Harrisburg for the Jan. 24 press conference, Bish- op Ronald W. Gainer said he was eager to connect with the people of the diocese to learn about its strengths and challenges. Accessibility, he said, has been a hallmark of his Episcopal ministry in the Diocese of Lexing- ton, where he has served as bishop since 2003. He hopes to maintain that trend in Harrisburg. “I have a lot to learn about this local Church, about all of the people in these 15 counties, about the strengths and the areas of challenge,” said Bishop Gainer. Referring to his appointment to Harrisburg as a homecoming – he was born in Pottsville, Pa., and served as a priest of the Diocese of Allentown for 29 years – Bishop Gainer said he planned to “hear with the ears and the heart of a hometown boy.” Father Robert M. Gillelan, Jr., Diocesan Ad- ministrator, made the announcement Jan. 24 that Pope Francis had named Bishop Gainer, 66, as the eleventh bishop of the diocese.
